Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Description: Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

Radiological sciences department investigation: Radiation incident class I, No. 608-C

Description: At about 6:30 a.m. one of the two Process Operators regularly stationed at 233-S was performing routine work in the Control Room, heard a nearby Poppy alpha detector breaking down.'' He checked and found the instrument appeared to be in operating condition as it would respond to a high level source. Further checking indicated that he was contaminated and that nearby horizontal surfaces were contaminated. This information was phoned to the Shift Supervisor who told the Operator that he would be … more

Summary analysis of the Redox Plant sand filter radiation measurements

Description: ``An Analysis of Redox Sand Filter Data,`` issued June 18, 1954, discussed increases in sand filter activity during the preceding six months, based upon air samples taken by Regional Radiation Measurement Unit of Radiological Sciences Department and upon vertical gamma radiation traverses (unshielded probe) made by the Redox Plant Radiation Monitoring Unit. ``Estimated Activity in the Redox Sand Filter`` dated July 15, 1954, were accurately defined the distribution of the activity within the sa… more

Preliminary write-up on wafer concept

Description: The objectives of this research effort concerned with laminated fuel elements are: (1) elimination or at least a substantial lowering of the rupture rate at present power levels and exposures; (2) pile operation at substantially higher power levels; and (3) long exposures, 3000 MWD/AT or greater and, therefore, a high degree of burnup.

DECAY AND STORAGE OF IRRADIATED FUEL

Description: Reasons for storage to allow decay of irradiated fuel elements and possible methods of storage are given. The effects on storage and inventory costs of fuel element composition plant size, element geometry, reactor type, methods of irradiation and recycle, and type of metallurgic al handling are discussed. Estimates and comparisons are included for the decay for several typical fuels. The special problems associated with thorium fuel elements are considered. (auth)
