Continued studies of calorimeter performance at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Description: Calibrations of two calorimeters used for tritium and plutonium assays were made. Data from three new standards of about 0.5, 1, and 5 W were added to the results of a previous report and analyzed together. The accuracies of both calorimeters appear to fall within the specified 0.5 percent, although the data now available for the large calorimeter is insufficient to permit a more definite conclusion. An expression of the bias correction for each calorimeter with respect to the sample power cann… more

Passive Nmis Measurements to Estimate Shape of Plutonium Assemblies (Slide Presentation)

Description: The purpose of this work is to estimate shape of plutonium assemblies using new signatures acquired by passive NMIS measurements (no external source). Applications include identification of containerized regular shapes of plutonium, identification by shape without template, verification of shape for template initialization, and potential utility for estimating shape of holdup in plutonium processing facilities. To illustrate the technique and test its feasibility, laboratory measurements have b… more

Active source requirements for assay of sludge drums on the BIR WIT system

Description: The design of the active source for active and passive computed tomography (A&PCT) is critical with respect to accuracy and throughput. The A&PCT active source requirements are highly dependent upon the attenuation properties of the waste matrix within the drum. On of the most highly attenuating waste matrices is sludge. This waste stream will consist of solidified aqueous waste consisting of IDC 001 first stage sludge and IDC 007 wet sludge. Also, the stream consists of solidified organic wast… more

Nondestructive assay using active and passive computed tomography

Description: The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has over 600,000 transuranic (TRU) waste drums temporarily stored at nearly 40 sites within the United States. Contents of these drums must be characterized before they are transported for permanent disposal. Traditional gamma-ray methods used to characterize nuclear waste introduce errors that are related to nonuniform measurement responses associated with unknown radioactive source and matrix material distributions. These errors can be reduced by a… more

Tank characterization report for single-shell tak 241-C-112. Revision 1

Description: One major function of the Tank Waste Remediation System (IWRS) is to characterize wastes in support of waste management and disposal activities at the Hanford Site. Analytical data from sampling and analysis and other available information about a tank are compiled and maintained in a tank characterization report (CR). This report and its appendixes serve as the CR for single-shell tank 24 1 -C- 1 12. The objectives of this report are: 1) to use characterization data in response to technical is… more

Particulate Hot Gas Stream Cleanup Technical Issues

Description: The characteristics of entrained particles generated by advanced coal conversion technologies and the harsh flue gas environments from which these particles must be removed challenge current ceramic barrier filtration systems. Measurements have shown that the size distribution, morphology, and chemical composition of particles generated by pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC) and gasification processes differ significantly from the corresponding characteristics of conventional pulverized… more

Gamma ray scanner systems for nondestructive assay of heterogeneous waste barrels

Description: Traditional gamma measurement errors are related to non-uniform measurement responses associated with unknown radioactive source and matrix material distributions. These errors can be reduced by application of tomographic techniques that measure these distributions. LLNL has developed two tomographic-based waste assay systems. They use external radioactive sources and tomography-protocol to map the attenuation within a waste barrel as a function of mono-energetic gamma-ray energy in waste conta… more

Molecular characterization of a maize regulatory gene. Progress report, July 1989--March 1990

Description: This progress report contains information concerning the characterization of the Maize regulatory gene. The findings of this research program have immediate significance. Firstly, it provides support for the notion that R proteins, produced by the regulatory gene, are functionally equivalent. Secondly, the success of these experiments provides a simple transient assay for either natural or constructed R protein mutations. The relative ease of this assay coupled with overnight results are import… more

Nondestructive inspection assessment of eddy current and electrochemical analysis to separate inconel and stainless steel alloys

Description: This report presents a nondestructive inspection assessment of eddy current and electrochemical analysis to separate inconel alloys from stainless steel alloys as well as an evaluation of cleaning techniques to remove a thermal oxide layer on aircraft exhaust components. The results of this assessment are presented in terms of how effective each technique classifies a known exhaust material. Results indicate that either inspection technique can separate inconel and stainless steel alloys. Based… more

Infrared microcalorimetric spectroscopy using uncooled thermal detectors

Description: The authors have investigated a novel infrared microcalorimetric spectroscopy technique that can be used to detect the presence of trace amounts of target molecules. The chemical detection is accomplished by obtaining the infrared photothermal spectra of molecules absorbed on the surface of an uncooled thermal detector. Traditional gravimetric based chemical detectors (surface acoustic waves, quartz crystal microbalances) require highly selective coatings to achieve chemical specificity. In con… more

Measurements of radionuclides in Pond C with an underwater HPGe detector

Description: This study on Pond C is part of a broader effort to appraise Savannah River Site (SRS) waterways impacted by the Par Pond Dam remediation program that commenced 1991. In addition, the results were sought to provide a more complete appraisal of the status of historical radioactive releases that remain in the Lower Three Runs system. Gamma emitting radionuclide concentrations in Pond C sediment were measured with an underwater HPGe detector. The predominant radionuclide was Cs-137 and the only ot… more

GAMQUEST, A computer program to identify gamma rays

Description: This paper describes the application of the computer program GAMQUEST to the study of gamma-ray spectra. The program is especially suited to the analysis of samples produced by neutron activation, and of environmental samples containing radioactive pollutants. GAMQUEST searches a large database (with data for over 60,000 gamma rays) to identify the various spectral lines from samples. The program runs on the VAX/6610 computer cluster of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and can be accessed from… more

Geochemical and stable isotope variations in baseflow from an urbanized watershed: White Rock Creek, Dallas, Texas

Description: Public concerns about surface water quality and its impact on health issues have put a premium on the ability to predict surface and groundwater quality in urban areas. The movement of toxins and nutrients in urban areas is largely controlled by interactions with soil and aquifer minerals along hydrologic pathways. Despite progress in theoretical modeling of the effects of these interactions on water chemistry, it is presently impossible to predict overall trends in urban water quality. Determi… more
