Maritime Reactor Program Annual Progress Report for Period Ending November 30, 1961

Description: Progress is reported on general support of the NS Savannah, operation of the pressurized-water in-pile loop, and advanced core development. A shield survey, iodine adsorption studies, a bioassay development program, preparation of replacement control rod drives, irradiation testing of pressure-vessel steel, a thermal insulation investigation, and an analysis of primary system components for gamm-emitting elements were carried out in the NS Savannah program. Water- chemistry studies in the press… more

A NEW METHOD TO DETERMINE VARIOUS FREE ENERGY STATES OF SILVER OXIDE ON SILVER METAL

Description: The solubility of silver oxide on silver metal is not the same as that of the bulk oxide. The differences in solubility were investigated by shaking silver powder in deaerated solutions of various concentrations of ammonia and in buffers of ammonia and ammonium nitrate at a constant temperature of 25 deg C. These solutions were shaken in an atmosphere of N/sub 2/ in a stoppered bottle and in the absence of light. The concentration of silver ion in these solutions was measured potentiometrically… more

TECHNIQUES USED FOR THE PRODUCTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF THE TRANSPLUTONIUM ELEMENTS

Description: Presented at Mendeleev Chemistry Conference, Moscow, March 1953. A study was made of the production and identification of the transplutonium elements with atomic number greater than 94. A detailed discussion is presented of the identification of elements 101 and 102 and the possible applications of these methods to elements beyond. A brief review of the discovery of all of the transplutonium elements is given to show the gradual change in experimental techniques. (J. E. D.)

Variation of the Half-Wave Potential of Organic Compounds With pH. Report No. 78

Description: From 19th International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Congress, London. A systematic introduction is presented to the subject of the variation with pH of the polarographic half-wave potential, which is probably the most readily measured electrochemical energetic parameter of organic compounds. Emphasis is placed on (a) the types of relationships observed for both reversible and irreversible electrode processes, (b) the mathematical formulation of these relationships, (c) the structural, m… more

Determination of Hafnium and Rare Earths in Aluminum Alloys

Description: Procedures are described for both a titrimetric and a gravimetric determination of hafnium in aluminum -hafnium alloys. The gravimetric procedure is used if the hafnium is to be recovered; otherwise, the titrimetric procedure is preferred. The sample is dissolved in aqua regia. Any undissolved hafnium is taken into solution via pyrosulfate fusion. The hafnium is separated from the aluminum and contaminants in the aluminum by precipitation as the mandelate. In the gravimetric procedure the hafni… more

New Brunswick Laboratory Quarterly Report: April-June 1954

Description: Chemistry of Feed Materials. Studies were made of the first step in the reduction of UO/sub 3/ to UO/sub 2/. The rates of reduction of pelleted- hydrated and pelleted-dehydrated UO/sub 3/ to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in steam were determined. The rates of reduction of pelleted U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ to UO/sub 2/ in 1-to-1 ammonia-steam were determined. Some preliminary measurements were made on the thermal conductivities of hydrated and dehydrated UO/sub 3/ wafers. Purification of Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ for spe… more
