Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation

Description: Abstract: "An investigation of the mercury salvage program has resulted in the development of an improved high compacity type of distillation apparatus. The still, electrically heated and essentially automatic in its operation, will produce at a rate greater than 75 pounds per hour and develop a product 99.99% pure or better. This still will handle the lowest grade crude of amalgam that can pass through the feed lines and will continue to develop a pure prodcut for comparatively long periods of time. The clean-out operation is amazingly simple and convenient and may be done within one-half hour while the apparatus itself is still hot. Two models of this design are scheduled for installation in a mercury recovery room of the Alpha Analytical Department of Building No. 9207."

The Effect of Ozonation in Reducing Trihalomethane Formation Potential

Description: Trihalomethanes such as chloroform, dichlorobromomethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform are formed when natural water is chlorinated in water treatment. This investigation explores the use of ozone to remove organic precursors from natural water, thus decreasing trihalomethane formation potential. The data suggest a mechanism involving formation of secondary precursors after prolonged contact with ozone, suggesting that trihalomethane precursors may be minimized by using low doses of ozone and short contact time.

Corrosion of Type 347 Stainless Steel in the Uranium-Derby Pickle Bath

Description: Abstract: In one of the final stages of the process at the Mallinckrodt Uranium Refining Center, a 45 per cent nitric acid solution at about 170 F is used to pickle the calcined magnesium fluoride scale off the uranium derbies. The increase in the fluoride-ion content of the bath tends to promote corrosion of the Type 347 stainless tanks. This attack becomes excessive if 0.3 g/liter of fluoride ion or more is present. It was found that if aluminum ion is added to the solution the corrosiveness of the bath can be controlled. Two or three times as much aluminum ion as fluoride ion present is found satisfactory at 170 F. Indications are that the tying up of the fluoride-ion by the complexion [AlF6]8 is responsible for the corrosion control.

Description: This report summarizes the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its major programs and regulatory requirements. The SDWA, Title XIV of the Public Health Service Act, is the key federal law for protecting public water supplies from harmful contaminants. First enacted in 1974 and substantially amended in 1986 and 1996, the act is administered through programs that establish standards and treatment requirements for public water supplies, control underground injection of wastes, finance infrastructure projects, and protect sources of drinking water.

Controversies over Redefining “Fill Material” Under the Clean Water Act

The Photolytic Ozonation of Organics in Aqueous Solutions

Description: The aim of the investigation described in this work is to gain a better understanding of the processes involved in the oxidation of organic compounds by photolytic ozonation in a laboratory scale reactor. The results and discussions are presented in Chapter III. This chapter contains four parts. In the first part, mass transfer efficiency and the calculation of the mass transfer coefficient, KLa, as well as the ozone decomposition rate constant, KD, are presented and compared with those obtained by other investigators. The second part deals with the kinetics of the photolysis of 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexachlorobiphenyl both in purified and natural lake water. Mathematical expressions and a discussion of the possible reaction processes involved are given. Kinetic models of ozonation and photolytic ozonation in purified and natural lake water are developed and discussed in part three. Rate constants are calculated from experimental data and used to predict values of substrate destruction with a mathematical model. The fourth part of this chapter deals with the identification of products from the photolysis, ozonation and photolytic ozonation of 2,2'4,4',6,6'-hexachlorobiphenyl. The products are isolated and identified using combined gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy, and reaction mechanisms are suggested.
