New states in the decays of psi(3095) and psi(3684). [Branching ratio]

Description: Preliminary analysis of new data on radiative decays of psi(3095) and psi(3684) confirms the existence of chi(3410) and of further structure in the 3.45 to 3.60 GeV region. The monochromatic photon from the transition psi(3684) ..-->.. ..gamma..chi(3410) is observed in the inclusive photon spectrum from psi(3684); the branching ratio for this decay is 7 +- 3 percent. No evidence was found for a state near 2.8 GeV reached in psi(3095) decays.

Decays of the psi'(3684) to other charmonium states

Description: An experimental study of the decays of the psi'(3684) to other charmonium states is reported. The decays of 10/sup 6/ psi'(3684)'s were observed with the SLAC-LBL Mark II detector at the e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring SPEAR. Branching ratios have been measured for psi'(3684) decays to ..gamma.. chi where the chi decays to ..gamma.. psi(3095) or to hadrons. An upper limit of 0.13% is set on the branching ratio for psi' ..-->.. ..gamma.. chi(3455) ..-->.. ..gamma gamma.. psi(3095); this is a facto… more

Study of intermediate states produced by radiative decays of psi. [Chi 3415, 3500, 3550]

Description: Recent experimental results on narrow states, intermediate between psi and psi', produced by radioactive decays of psi' are discussed. These chi states are examined using the following processes: (1) inclusive photon spectra to search for monoenergetic photon lines, (2) cascade processes, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 1/chi ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 2/psi ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/ or ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, and (3) hadronic decays of chi states, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..chi ..-->.. hadrons. Mass and spin formula for quasi-stable high-mass mesons from dual resonance models. [Stability, Veneziaro model]

Description: It is shown that the generalized Veneziano model predicts the existence of quasi-stable high mass mesons with definite masses and spins, which have their lowest-multiplicity decay-modes suppressed. Although the predicted degree of stability is less than experimentally required, proper introduction of internal quantum numbers into the model would likely enhance it. Besides psi (3.1) and psi' (3.7), relatively stable vector mesons of higher masses are expected, with the next one at a mass of appr… more

Radiative decays of the psi' to all-photon final states

Description: A sample of 1.8 x 10/sup 6/ produced psi's collected by the Crystal Ball detector at SPEAR is used to measure branching ratios of selected radiative psi' decays to non-charmonium states which decay into photons. A sample of 2.2 x 10/sup 6/ produced J/psi's is used to measure the same radiative decays from the J/psi. The ratios BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..f)/BR(J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..f) = 9 +- 3%, BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..theta)/BR(J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..theta) < 10% - 15%, BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma.… more

Pseudoscalar mixing effects on hadronic and photonic decays of the new mesons

Description: The mixing of eta, eta', and eta/sub c/ is calculated in a cylinder dominated model and the results are applied to the hadronic decay psi' ..-->.. psi eta and a number of photonic decays, using vector meson dominance. The results are in excellent agreement with all experimental data.

Radiative transitions to an eta/sub c/(2980) candidate state and the observation of hadronic decays of this state

Description: Preliminary results from the Crystal Ball and Mark II experiments at SPEAR are presented on radiative transitions from psi'(3684) and J/psi(3095) to an eta/sub c/(2980) candidate state. In addition to the inclusive photon signals reported previously by the Crystal Ball, both detectors now see exclusive hadronic final state signals at masses consistent with the states inclusively determined mass of 2981 +- 16 MeV.

Radiative decays of PSI(3684). [Branching fraction, upper limits]

Description: Results of studies of radiative decays of psi(3684) are presented. The data for this work were obtained with the Magnetic Detector at the electron-positron storage ring SPEAR. These results indicate the existence of three states chi, with masses 3415, 3500, and 3550 MeV, produced in radiative decays of psi'. There is evidence for a fourth state with mass either 3340 or 3455 MeV. From study of the psi(3684) inclusive photon spectrum, the branching fraction for psi(3684) ..-->.. ..gamma.. chi(341… more

Discovery of charm

Description: In my talk I will cover the period 1973 to 1976 which saw the discoveries of the J/psi and psi' resonances and most of the Psion spectroscopy, the tau lepton and the D/sup 0/,D/sup +/ charmed meson doublet. Occasionally I will refer briefly to more recent results. Since this conference is on the history of the weak-interactions I will deal primarily with the properties of naked charm and in particular the weakly decaying doublet of charmed mesons. Most of the discoveries I will mention were mad… more

Hadron production by e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 2. 6 and 7. 8 GeV

Description: Results are presented on multihadron production by e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation from the Mark I and Mark II detectors at SPEAR. Other than the narrow resonances psi (3095) and psi' (3684), the total hadronic cross section varies between 36.5 and 6.4 nb over the center-of-mass energy range 2.6 to 7.8 GeV with complicated structure near 4.1 GeV not completely resolved by these measurements. Evidence for scaling of inclusive momentum distributions of hadrons is presented.

Description: Preliminary results are given from the Mark II experiment at SPEAR on radiative decays of the psi' (3684) and on inclusive baryon production from 3.67 to 7.4 GeV center-of-mass energy. A 90% confidence level upper limit of 0.12% is given for BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..eta'/sub c/(3455)) x BR(eta'/sub c/(3455 ..-->.. ..gamma..psi)). 10 references.

Radiative decays of the psi prime to all-photon final states

Description: Results of studies of selected radiative decays of the psi' to charmonium and non-charmonium states which decay into photons are presented. These studies were performed using a sample of 1.8 x 10/sup 6/ produced psi''s collected by the Crystal Ball detector at the SPEAR electron-positron storage ring. The branching ratios of the chi/sub 0/, chi/sub 2/, and eta'/sub c/ to two photons have been measured to be (4.5 +- 2.2 +- 2.0) x 10/sup -4/, (9.5 +- 2.9 +- 4.5) x 10/sup -4/ (first errors statist… more

Recent results on D decays and lepton, photon, (and hadron) production of charm

Description: After a brief introduction to the experiments with results included in this review, we will discuss, in turn, production of psi and psi', production of open charm in lepton and photon beams, D decays, and give a brief token mention of recent hadroproduction results. Emphasis will be on results reported since the Paris conference (August, 1982), but we will try to include all results since the last Lepton Photon Conference at Bonn (August, 1981) as well as earlier results when necessary for comp… more
