Current status on narrow N anti N states

Description: An attempt is made to summarize the experimental status of narrow B anti B states as of mid-1979. In particular, concentration is placed on the current experimental situations and prospects regarding three serious contenders for the so-called baryonium states. Theoretical concepts of baryoniums, narrow N anti N states known as S(1935), anti pp(2020), and anti pp(2204), and some forthcoming results, and problems of the above three resonances are discussed. 31 references. SLAC three-body partial wave analysis system

Description: We present a heuristic description of the SLAC-LBL three-meson partial wave model, and describe how we have implemented it at SLAC. The discussion details the assumptions of the model and the analysis, and emphasizes the methods we have used to prepare and fit the data. 28 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

Trends in exotic-atom research

Description: An attempt was made to analyze the trends in the development of exotic-atom research on the basis of a recently compiled bibliography. The analysis of nearly 4000 publications demonstrated that: (1) exotic atoms are nuclear probes used in every field of physics, from the test of quantum electrodynamics (QED) to chemical physics, to materials sciences; (2) the role of nuclear and atomic physics in exotic atom research is decreasing (although it is still significant), while that of materials scie… more

Technical progress report of the Indiana University High Energy Physics Group, December 1, 1976--November 30, 1977. [Summaries of research activities at Indiana University]

Description: Since the beginning of the ERDA contract year (Dec. 1, 1976), the Indiana High Energy Physics Group has been actively participating in experimental programs at SLAC, Fermilab, CERN, and the Argonne ZGS. The SLAC effort (E103) is a search for exotic mesons. The polarization program at Fermilab's internal target (CO) area involves polarization measurements in pp ..-->.. pp (E313) and pp ..-->.. pX (E522). The contribution to the Multiparticle Spectrometer at Fermilab is a major ingredient in a se… more

Apparatus to detect stable fractional charges on matter

Description: The construction of an apparatus designed to detect stable fractional charges on matter, if they exist, to the level of 10/sup -24/ per nucleon is reported and discussed. The charges on a stream of highly consistent droplets produced by the apparatus are determined by accurate measurement of the deflection of the droplets in falling through a static electric field. Maintenance of certain parameters of operation calculated to limit the random effects of electrical and aerodynamical disturbances … more

Proposal to measure the D meson decay constant F/sub D/

Description: Because the branching ratios of the purely leptonic modes of D meson are small compared to the semileptonic decays, it is suggested that the decay D ..-->.. K + l + ..nu.. might be used to deduce the value of F/sub D/, the weak decay constant of D meson. 17 references.

Evidence for delta-hole components from pion reactions

Description: Some anomalies observed in pion-induced reactions have been qualitatively explained with a model which includes ..delta../sub 3/ /sub 3/ admixtures in low lying nuclear states. Semi-quantitative analysis of these effects indicates the amplitudes for the ..delta../sub 3/ /sub 3/ admixtures necessary to explain these effects are on the order of a few percent. Although a more rigorous theoretical treatment of this problem is necessary, it appears that pion-induced reactions may provide a tool with… more

New states in the decays of psi(3095) and psi(3684). [Branching ratio]

Description: Preliminary analysis of new data on radiative decays of psi(3095) and psi(3684) confirms the existence of chi(3410) and of further structure in the 3.45 to 3.60 GeV region. The monochromatic photon from the transition psi(3684) ..-->.. ..gamma..chi(3410) is observed in the inclusive photon spectrum from psi(3684); the branching ratio for this decay is 7 +- 3 percent. No evidence was found for a state near 2.8 GeV reached in psi(3095) decays.

Construction of the Soudan 2 detector

Description: The authors reported here on the progress in construction of the Soudan 2 nucleon decay detector which is being built at the Soudan iron mine in Minnesota. The authors also report the expected event rate and characteristics of low energy neutrino events, muon events, multiple muon events, and other cosmic ray phenomena which the authors might be sensitive to.

Observation and phenomenology of glueballs

Description: The experimental evidence and the relevant phenomenology of glueballs are reviewed. The opinion is expressed that the glueball resonance explanation is the only viable one for the data on g/sub T/, g/sub T/sup 1//, and g/sub T/sup 11//. It is shown that alternative explanations are either incorrect, or do not fit the data, or both, leading to the conclusion that these states are probably produced by glueballs. The OZI rule is explained. Glueball masses and width are considered. Some conclusions… more

Hadronic production of J/sup PC/ = 2/sup + +/ glueballs

Description: An OZI suppressed channel with variable mass, namely the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n, has been used as a filter which allows resonating gluons or glueballs to pass, while strongly rejecting conventional quark-built hadronic states. The breakdown of the OZI suppression signals a glueball. Glueball mass and particle width estimates are discussed. Reasons why g/sub T/'s have not been seen in other channels, particularly the decay of J/psi, are considered. 34 refs., 9 figs. (LEW)

sigma. /sup +/ and. sigma. /sup -/ production polarizations

Description: We report preliminary results from Fermilab experiment E497 on the production polarizations of ..sigma../sup +/ and ..sigma../sup -/ hyperons. Hyperons were produced inclusively at non zero production angles by 400 GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. The polarization was analyzed by the weak decay asymmetry in the hadronic decay modes ..sigma../sup +/ ..-->.. p..pi../sup 0/ and ..sigma../sup -/ ..-->.. n..pi../sup -/. Spectroscopy of gluonic states at LAMPF II

Description: The properties of QCD which imply the existence of gluonic states are reviewed. The problem of discovering the spectrum of gluonic states is discussed in general and illustrated with examples from current data. Higher statistics fixed target experiments, such as could be performed at LAMPF II, are essential for further progress.

Heavy quark jets

Description: In this exercise we examine the performance of a detector specifically configured to tag heavy quark jets through direct observations of D-meson decays with a high resolution vertex detector. To optimize the performance of such a detector, we assume the small diamond beam crossing configuration as described in the 1978 ISABELLE proposal, giving a luminosity of 10/sup 32/ cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/. The study was carried out with events generated by the ISAJET Monte Carlo and a computer simulation o… more

Description: Recent experimental results on narrow states, intermediate between psi and psi', produced by radioactive decays of psi' are discussed. These chi states are examined using the following processes: (1) inclusive photon spectra to search for monoenergetic photon lines, (2) cascade processes, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 1/chi ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 2/psi ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/ or ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, and (3) hadronic decays of chi states, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..chi ..-->.. hadrons.
