Two-component flow study in large-diameter horizontal pipe

Description: Westinghouse Savannah River Company, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, and Wyle Laboratory cooperated in a series of single- and two-component calibration tests conducted to obtain sufficient information for calibrating flowmeters, to observe flow patterns, and to estimate void functions. Testing, conducted in large-diameter horizontal pipe, covered total flows of 0.19 to 1.89 m{sup 3}/s (3000 to 30000 gpm) and inlet void fractions up to 40%. A flow regime map, constructed using video imag… more

Low-Cost Solar Array Project. Task I. Silicon material: investigation of the hydrogenation of SiCl/sub 4/. Fifth quarterly report

Description: Reaction kinetic measurements on the hydrochlorination of SiCl/sub 4/ and mg silicon metal in the presence of a copper catalyst were last reported as a function of reaction temperature, reactor pressure and H/sub 2//SiCl/sub 4/ ratio, 3 SiCl/sub 4/ + 2 H/sub 2/ + Si ..-->.. 4 SiHCl/sub 3/. The same reaction was repeated at a lower catalyst loading of 2 wt%. In the presence of 2 wt% cuprous chloride (based on silicon metal), the hydrochlorination reaction rate is doubled to give about the sam… more

Downhole Steam Injector. [Patent Application]

Description: An improved downhole steam injector has an angled water orifice to swirl the water through the device for improved heat transfer before it is converted to steam. The injector also has a sloped diameter reduction in the steam chamber to throw water that collects along the side of the chamber during slant drilling into the flame for conversion to steam. In addition, the output of the flame chamber is beveled to reduce hot spots and increase efficiency, and the fuel-oxidant inputs are arranged to … more

New Mexico's energy resources '81. Annual report of Bureau of Geology in the Mining and Minerals Division of New Mexico Energy and Minerals Department

Description: Although production of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ declined only slightly in 1980, New Mexico's share of domestic production has declined from 48% in 1976 to 35% in 1980. Production projections indicate a continued decline in 1981 and lower production until at least 1984. New Mexico has 41% of total domestic reserves producible in the $50-per-lb cost category. In keeping with the anticipated steady depletion of reserves, production of crude oil in New Mexico was 69.9 million bls, a 6.3% decline in product… more

STOPPING POWER AND ENERGY FOR ION PAIR PRODUCTION FOR 340 MEVPROTONS

Description: The relative stopping powers for 300 Mev protons of H, Li, Be, C, Al, Fe, Cu, Ag, Sn, W, Pb, and U have been measured. The results are shown in Table I. The energy spent per ion-pair production in the gases H{sub 2}, He, N{sub 2}, O{sub 2}, and A at 340 Mev proton energy has also been measured. The results are shown in Table II.

Evaluated Decay Data for 206TI.

Description: Evaluated decay data for the {sup 206}Tl nuclide are presented, including recommended values for the half-life, {beta}- and {gamma}-ray emission energies and probabilities. Data on X-ray radiations, Auger and conversion electron energies and emission probabilities are also tabulated. Carefully evaluated data for radioactive nuclides refer to complex nuclear level schemes and tables of numerical values, which quantify fundamental nuclear structure information such as level energies and quantum n… more

Temporal changes in noble gas compositions within the Aidlinsector ofThe Geysers geothermal system

Description: The use of nonreactive isotopic tracers coupled to a full thermal-hydrological reservoir simulation allows for an improved method of investigating how reservoir fluids contained within matrix and fractures contribute over time to fluids produced from geothermal systems. A combined field and modeling study has been initiated to evaluate the effects of injection, production, and fracture-matrix interaction on produced noble gas contents and isotopic ratios. Gas samples collected periodically from… more

U.S. Department of Energy Consequence Management Under the National Response Framework

Description: Dramatic advances in data management have been made as a result of the Paperless FRMAC initiative, sponsored by the DOE’s Office of Emergency Response (NA-42). The FRMAC (Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center) is the hub for all radiological monitoring and the production of data products that interpret those measurements in terms of protective action guidelines. As such, very large amounts of data must be quickly assimilated from numerous sources and then widely distributed as g… more

Hadron collider physics

Description: An introduction to the techniques of analysis of hadron collider events is presented in the context of the quark-parton model. Production and decay of W and Z intermediate vector bosons are used as examples. The structure of the Electroweak theory is outlined. Three simple FORTRAN programs are introduced, to illustrate Monte Carlo calculation techniques. 25 refs.

Pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos in supernovae

Description: We calculate the emissivity for the pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos, in a way that can be used in supernova calculations. We also present some simple estimates which show that such processes can act as an efficient energy-loss mechanism in the shocked supernova core, and we use this fact to extract neutrino mass limits from SN1987A neutrino observations. 24 refs., 2 figs.

Atomic and molecular surface and volume processes in the analysis of negative hydrogen discharges

Description: The principal source of negative ion generation in hydrogen discharges is now recognized to be low-energy electron attachment to H/sub 2/(/nu//prime//prime/) molecules excited to the middle portion of the vibrational spectrum. Electron excitation processes are generally taken to be the principal source of H/sub 2/(/nu//prime//prime/) generation, with high-energy excitations through the singlet spectrum being the principal excitation process populating the active portion of the vibrational spect… more

Direct Methane Conversion to Methanol

Description: Objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a catalytic membrane reactor (ceramic membrane combined with catalyst) to selectively produce methanol by partial oxidation of methane. None of the membranes tested in a high pressure system could selectively remove methanol, until a cooling tube was inserted inside the membrane reactor to quench the product stream; this effectively increased methanol selectivity 2[times] during methane oxidation. For both conditions, combined selectivity for met… more
