Spectrophotometric studies of solutions at elevated temperatures and pressures: status and program for FY1961 and part of FY 1962

Description: A program was initiated on the spectrophotometric study of aqueous solution chemistry. The goal is operation at temperatures up to at least 330 deg C and at pressures up to 200 atm, and to near the critical point if this appears to be feasible. A spectrometer capable of operation under these extreme conditions is being designed. (W.L.H.)

Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Asymptotic Formula for Counting in Deterministic and Random Dynamical Systems

Performance Characteristics of an Extended Throat Flow Nozzle for the Measurement of High Void Fraction Multi-phase Flows

Description: An extended throat flow nozzle has been examined as a device for the measurement of very high void fraction (a ³ 0.95) multi-phase flows. Due to its greater density and partial contact with the wall, the equilibrium velocity of the liquid phase appreciably lags that of the lighter gas phase. Thermal Study of Crystal Field Splittings in Erbium Ethylsulfate

Description: The heat capacities of erbium and yttrium ethylsulfates were measured in the range 12-300 deg K. The magnetic contribution of the erbium ion was evaluated with the help of an assumption concernlng the difference in lattice contributions between the erbium and yttrium salts. The contribution agrees, to within experimental error, with the experimental energy level scheme for the /sup 4/I/ sub 15/2/ state previously published. (auth)

Observations of Stresses and Strains Near Intersections of Conical and Cylindrical Shells

Description: To test theory, models of the interaction of a conical and cylindrical shell, having three different apex angles in the cone and three different ratios of thickness to cylinder diameter, were subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure and the resulting strains at various points were measured.
