Progress on PEP-II Magnet Power Conversion System?

Description: The various power systems for supplying the PEP-II DCmagnets rely exclusively on switch mode conversion, utilizing a varietyof means depending on the requirements. All of the larger power supplies, ranging from 10 to 200 kW, are powered from DC sources utilizingrectified 480 V AC. Choppers can be used for the series connectedstrings, but for smaller groups and individual magnets, inverters drivinghigh-frequency transformers with secondary rectifiers comprise the bestapproach. All of the various … more

Effect of Opening Helix on Flying Wire Emittance Measurements

Description: It has been noted for some time that after the protons are injected, when the helix is opened the proton normalized vertical emittance (as measured by the flying wires) increases by about two {pi} mm-mr. The horizontal emittance decreases by about the same amount. This has been recognized as a false result, but there has been uncertainty as to whether it was due to the flying wires not measuring the beam sigma correctly when the beam center moved at the wires or whether the effective beta at th… more

Early-time turn-on characteristics of a high current thyristor

Description: Studies and experiments aimed at increasing the turn-on speed of high current thyristors have been carried out in recent years to meet an expanding need in the pulsed power handling capacity and high pulse repetition rate capability. The present tests were conducted to measure the early-time turn-on characteristics of ABB 2003-45A02 thyristors and to determine whether special triggering techniques could raise the safe turn-on rate to the 100,000 A/{micro}s range which would qualify it for appli… more

Description: Over the last 18 months Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), El Camino Real Engineering, Inc. (CRE), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) have worked on the development of disturbance-free power at the medium voltage substation level. The work resulted in the Secure Bus concept, a system in which a medium voltage bus in a substation is immune to power outages and voltage sags on the utility source. The Secure Bus voltage is also immune to voltage s… more

Ac-dc converter firing error detection

Description: Each of the twelve Booster Main Magnet Power Supply modules consist of two three-phase, full-wave rectifier bridges in series to provide a 560 VDC maximum output. The harmonic contents of the twelve-pulse ac-dc converter output are multiples of the 60 Hz ac power input, with a predominant 720 Hz signal greater than 14 dB in magnitude above the closest harmonic components at maximum output. The 720 Hz harmonic is typically greater than 20 dB below the 500 VDC output signal under normal operation… more

Composite liner design to maximize the shock pressure beyond megabars

Description: Among the solid liners made of a single material which are imploded onto a target under the same driving condition, the aluminum liner produces the highest shock pressure. The authors propose the composite liner design which can increase the shock pressure several times over the best performance obtainable from an aluminum liner. They have also developed a general formulation to optimize the composite liner design for any driving current, and derived a set of very useful scaling relations. Fina… more

Photovoltaic power systems and the National Electrical Code: Suggested practices

Description: This guide provides information on how the National Electrical Code (NEC) applies to photovoltaic systems. The guide is not intended to supplant or replace the NEC; it paraphrases the NEC where it pertains to photovoltaic systems and should be used with the full text of the NEC. Users of this guide should be thoroughly familiar with the NEC and know the engineering principles and hazards associated with electrical and photovoltaic power systems. The information in this guide is the best availab… more

Environmental, health and safety issues related to commercializing CuInSe{sub 2}-based photovoltaics

Description: Photovoltaics technology is rapidly evolving towards a new generation of low-cost thin film technologies. One of the most promising materials in this new generation is copper indium selenide (CuInSe{sub 2} or CIS). As with any new material, successful commercialization of CIS photovoltaic (PV) technology will require attention to environmental, health and safety issues, including consideration of the sources, usage, and end-of-product-life disposal and/or recycling of the constituent materials.… more

Open-path millimeter-wave spectroscopy in the 225--315 GHz range

Description: This paper discusses the development of an open-path millimeter-wave (mm-wave) spectroscopy system in the 225--315 GHz atmospheric window. The new system is primarily a monostatic swept-frequency radar consisting of a mm-wave sweeper, hot-electron-bolometer or Schottky detector, and trihedral reflector. The heart of the system is a Russian backward-wave oscillator (BWO) tube that is tunable over 225--350 GHz. A mm-wave sweeper has been built with the BWO tube to sweep the entire frequency range… more

Current limiters

Description: The current that flows between the electrical test equipment and the nuclear explosive must be limited to safe levels during electrical tests conducted on nuclear explosives at the DOE Pantex facility. The safest way to limit the current is to use batteries that can provide only acceptably low current into a short circuit; unfortunately this is not always possible. When it is not possible, current limiters, along with other design features, are used to limit the current. Three types of current … more

Synchronization of multiple magnetically switched modules to power linear induction adder accelerators

Description: In applications where multiple magnetic modulators are used to drive a single Linear Induction Voltage Adder (LIVA) or Linear Accelerator (LINAC), it is essential that the outputs of the modulators be synchronized. Output rise times are typically in the 10 ns to 20 ns range, often making it necessary to synchronize to within less than 1 ns. Microprocessor and electronic feedback schemes have been developed and demonstrated that achieve the required level of synchronization, however, they are so… more
