Poultry Management

Description: "This paper is confined entirely to the chicken industry, as it was found that to treat thoroughly all phases of poultry raising would make a bulletin of undue length, and furthermore, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea fowls, etc., are covered in a satisfactory manner by other publications of the Department. The bulletin has been prepared from the practical standpoint, and technicalities have been avoided as much as possible. In all respects the effort has been made to bring the discussion of methods and appliances down to date, including such subjects as dry feeding, curtain-front houses, colony houses, etc.... The methods used on some of these farms are described, and some of the houses and appliances are illustrated." -- p. 2

Characteristic lesions are found in the internal organs of affected fowls, and are easily recognized. Treatment of affected fowls is useless, but the disease may be stamped out by methods which" include utilization of the tuberculin test, partial or total extermination of diseased flocks, proper disposal of diseased carcasses, and control of vermin. -- p. 2

An effort has been made to illustrate the various phases of poultry production in such a way as to impress upon the reader's mind the principles of poultry keeping. Under 'Selecting the Breed,' for example, photographs are shown of the more popular breeds of each of the three main classes of poultry, giving the reader an immediate and complete idea of the appearance of these fowls, the classes to which they belong, and their economical usefulness. In like manner other essential phases of poultry keeping are illustrated and discussed. Throughout the bulletin references are given to to other publications issued by the department which give more detailed information on each of the subjects discussed and which may be obtained on request." -- p. 2
