Molten salt processing of mixed wastes with offgas condensation

Description: We are developing an advanced process for treatment of mixed wastes in molten salt media at temperatures of 700--1000{degrees}C. Waste destruction has been demonstrated in a single stage oxidation process, with destruction efficiencies above 99.9999% for many waste categories. The molten salt provides a heat transfer medium, prevents thermal surges, and functions as an in situ scrubber to transform the acid-gas forming components of the waste into neutral salts and immobilizes potentially fugit… more

Final safety analysis report for the Galileo mission: Volume 3 (Book 1), Nuclear risk analysis document: Revision 1

Description: It is the purpose of the NRAD to provide an analysis of the range of potential consequences of accidents which have been identified that are associated with the launching and deployment of the Galileo mission spacecraft. The specific consequences analyzed are those associated with the possible release of radioactive material (fuel) of the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs). They are in terms of radiation doses to people and areas of deposition of radioactive material. These consequen… more

XPS studies of actinide materials. [X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, review]

Description: Applications of x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) to the study of actinide materials are reviewed. Examples discussed here include the band structures of thorium and uranium metal, the multiplet structure associated with the 5f electron states in oxides of the transuranium elements, the test for temporal configurations in NpO/sub 2/, crystal field splitting of the U 6p/sub /sup 3///sub 2// level in a series of uranyl compounds, mixed oxidation states in Cf/sub 7/O/sub 12/, and a test for t… more

Proceedings of the 2nd Annual Tank Integrity Workshop

Description: The production of nuclear weapons in the United States to help defeat the Axis Powers in World War II and to maintain national security during the Cold War required the construction of a vast nuclear facility complex in the 1940's and 1950's. These facilities housed nuclear reactors needed for the production of plutonium and chemical plants required to separate the plutonium from fission products and to convert plutonium compounds to pure plutonium metal needed for weapons. The chemical separat… more
