Evaluation of macroreticular anion exchange resin - RTA-893-R

Description: The macroreticular anion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA-900-OH, and an experimental resin from Ionac Chemical Company were irradiated by a /sup 60/Co source to doses of 5 x 10/sup 7/ rad and 10/sup 8/ rad. These doses approximate or exceed the dose encountered by the deionizer resins in 100-Area service. The loss in exchange capacity and the volume changes of Amberlite IRA-900 on irradiation were similar to those found previously for Amberlite IRA-400. The Ionac experimental resin, which had a c… more

Fission gas inventories and estimated releases from PRTR HPD fuel

Description: The PRTR is entering a phase of operation in which there is an increased danger of high level fission product release from failed fuel. The higher fuel operating temperatures result in a much larger percentage fission gas release from the fuel crystal; also it is believed that the central voids and inter-crystal cracks greatly improve the transport of fission gases from the far end of a fuel rod to a defect location. 6 tabs.

C-1 coproduct development for N Reactor: Excerpts from N-Reactor Department research and development budget for FY-1967 and revision of budget for FY-1966

Description: This report discusses the production of weapon grade plutonium and tritium as an economically attractive mode of operation for N-Reactor. With the successful completion of the proposed research and development program coproduct production in N-Reactor could begin in January 1967. Approximately 5 kg of tritium could be produced at a reduction in unit total cost of up to $7 per gram equivalent when compared to other modes of operation of N-Reactor that yield only-weapon grade plutonium. Achieving… more

Research and development allocations and plant assistance support, FY-1966

Description: This report discusses an allocation of $1,320,000 of 02 Reactor and Metallurgy funds which was previously made to the Pacific Northwest Laboratories. The Process Technology work order support which N-Reactor Department expected to provide during FY 1966 was estimated. The R&D allocation was based on the 189 budget proposals which were prepared early in 1965 and program identifications were provided. The integrated five year research and development program was subsequently formulated with the a… more

Supplement B to Production Test IP-669-AC depleted uranium irradiation smaller reactors

Description: The objective of this supplement is to authorize an increase in the maximum goal exposure of the depleted uranium columns to 2400 MWD/T. The parent documents, while intending to produce 25 Kg of 18 w/o Pu-240, made it clear that these would be minimum requirements and ``every reasonable effort will be made to exceed both {hor_ellipsis} 25 Kg and 18 w/o Pu-240.`` Operation to date shows excellent performance of the target element, and an increase in the depleted uranium goal exposures would both… more

Thorium processing nuclear safety review

Description: A review of the nuclear safety aspects of a proposal to process about 150 to 250 tons of thorium containing about one kilogram U-233 per ton has been made. The review was made at the request of the Chemical Processing Department in whose Purex plant the thorium processing will be carried out. The review group finds that the proposed operation can be conducted with no more risk of criticality than attends the standard plutonium processing in Purex, provided the safeguards planned by the Departme… more

Neutron absorption lithium detector

Description: It is planned to manufacture ceramic target elements for use in N-Reactor. The potential exists for overdilution of the lithium-aluminate with aluminum powder. One method of nondestructively determining the target element type is by neutron absorption. This technique makes use of the different thermal neutron cross sections of aluminum and lithium. The target element to be tested is placed between a neutron counter and a neutron source--the neutron count with the unknown sample is then compared… more

Extended plutonium irradiation

Description: This document examines potential yields from extended irradiation of plutonium in a Hanford K reactor. The study was made using the MOFOA program on the IBM-7090 Computer. Two types of plutonium were examined -- weapons grade plutonium and plutonium from (.22 w/o U- 235) depleted uranium irradiated to an exposure of about 2000 mwd/t. Both types of plutonium were irradiated for 3 years at an assumed 80 per cent operating efficiency.
