Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, January-March 1962

Description: The processing of Al fuel, principally of the MTR-ETR type, is reported. Processing rate averaged 90% of flow sheet values for the entire operating period, and a U recovery of 99.85% was achieved. Aqueous Zr fuel processing studles continued with the objective of adapting the HF process to continuous dissolution-complexing in order to increase the capacity of the ICPP process while using as much existing equipment as possible to minimize costs. Good results were indicated in a 190-hr run dissol… more

Virtual Crystallizer

Description: Large dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals are grown in large crystallizers to provide raw material for the manufacture of optical components for large laser systems. It is a challenge to grow crystal with sufficient mass and geometric properties to allow large optical plates to be cut from them. In addition, KDP has long been the canonical solution crystal for study of growth processes. To assist in the production of the crystals and the understanding of crystal growth phenomena, analysis of gr… more

Heuristic Drift-based Model of the Power Scrape-off width in H-mode Tokamaks

Description: An heuristic model for the plasma scrape-off width in H-mode plasmas is introduced. Grad B and curv B drifts into the SOL are balanced against sonic parallel flows out of the SOL, to the divertor plates. The overall particle flow pattern posited is a modification for open field lines of Pfirsch-Shlüter flows to include sinks to the divertors. These assumptions result in an estimated SOL width of ~ 2aρp/R. They also result in a first-principles calculation of the particle confinement time of H-m… more

A Single Pulse Sub-Nanosecond Proton RFQ

Description: A Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linac system has been developed to provide a single pulse of 2 MeV protons with a beam pulse width of {approx}300 ps and a charge of 30 pC, either for injection into a pulsed Dielectric Wall Accelerator or for bombardment of a target to produce a fast neutron pulse. The 1.2 m long RFQ structure operates at 425 MHz and bunches and accelerates a single 2.35 ns beam pulse injected into it at 35 keV using a parallel plate deflector placed directly in front of the … more

Control Dewar and VLPC Bayonet Can Platform Connection Design and Analysis

Description: The four connections for the control dewar and VLPC bayonet can platform are designed, using finite element analysis, to carry all dead weight and live loads. Based on the loads applied to the platform, two 1 inch thick plates and two 3/4 inch thick brackets made of ASTM A572-Grade 42 are required. The 1 inch thick plate requires a 3/8 inch thick intermediate steel material, between the 8-inch x 4-inch x 1/4-inch boom and the plate, for load reinforcement as well as weld area reinforcement. Structural Testing of SM-2 Fuel Elements

Description: Ability of the originally designed SM-2 stainless steel fuel elements to withstand static transverse pressure gradients of normal reactor operetion was investigated. Fourteen simulated original SM-2 type fuel elements by Tungsten inert gas (TIG) and electric resistance welding processes were subjected to pressure gradients to 6 psi and measured for deflection during stress and distortion after stress. Tests provided a basis for selecting a reference SM-2 fuel-element design and established a me… more

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Calorimeter Installation Bridge Non-Destructive Test Result

Description: After the central calorimeter was installed on the center beam a cracked weld was found on the bridge. The weld was a partial penetration between the top rail plate and the T-1 steel nose section. The crack is fully across the width of the rail plate and the rail is depressed in a concave shape. That is, the depression is deeper in the center and feathers out to zero at the end of the rail. Upon close inspection it was obvious that there was no penetration of weld metal into the T-1 material. T… more

Small-Scale Performance Testing for Studying New Explosives

Description: The development of new high-explosive (HE) formulations involves characterizing their safety and performance. Small-scale experiments requiring only a small amount of explosives are of interest because they can facilitate development while minimizing hazards and reducing cost. A detonation-spreading, dent test, called the Floret test, was designed to obtain performance data for new explosives. It utilizes the detonation of about a 1.0 g sample of HE, initiated by an accelerated aluminum flyer. … more

GAMMA AND BETA HEAT GENERATION RATES IN THE HFIR CORE

Description: A calculation was made to determine the fuel plate heat fluxes resulting from after shutdown fission product heating. Fission product source strengths were obtained via the IBM Internuc code. Slab geometry was assumed. The results indicated that the maximum heat flux would occur slightly inboard of the center of the fuel annulus, with the heat flux at the inner annulus radius running about 8% below the maximum, and the outer radius heat flux 10% below the maximum. For decay times of 1.0, 10, 10… more

Nano-Carbides and the Strength of Steels as Assessed by Electrical Resistivity Studies

Description: The work of Frommeyer on electrical conductivity measurements in pearlitic steels is reviewed to provide insight into microstructures developed during wi wire drawing. Electrical re conductivity measurements were made as a function of drawing strain (up to {var_epsilon} = 6.0) for wires with strength exceeding 3500MPa. The results show that electrical conductivity increases during wire wire-drawing to a maximum value, then decreases with further deformation finally reaching a steady state value… more

Production of Arrayed and Rearrayed cDNA Libraries for Public Use

Description: Researchers studying genes and their protein products need an easily available source for that gene. The I.M.A.G.E. Consortium at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is an important source of such genes in the form of arrayed cDNA libraries. The arrayed clones and associated data are available to the public, free of restriction. Libraries are transformed and titered into 384-well master plates, from which 2-8 copies are made. One copy plate is stored by LLNL while others are sent to sequenci… more

A Review of Large-Scale Fracture Experiments Relevant to Pressure Vessel Integrity Under Pressurized Thermal Shock Conditions

Description: Numerous large-scale fracture experiments have been performed over the past thirty years to advance fracture mechanics methodologies applicable to thick-wall pressure vessels. This report first identifies major factors important to nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) integrity under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) conditions. It then covers 20 key experiments that have contributed to identifying fracture behavior of RPVs and to validating applicable assessment methodologies. The experiments a… more
