Normal-pressure tests of circular plates with clamped edges

Description: A fixture is described for making normal-pressure tests of flat plates 5 inches in diameter in which particular care was taken to obtain rigid clamping at the edges. Results are given for 19 plates, ranging in thickness from 0.015 to 0.072 inch. The center deflections and the extreme-fiber stresses at low pressures were found to agree with theoretical values; the center deflections at high pressures were 4 to 12 percent greater than the theoretical values. Empirical curves are derived of the pressure for the beginning of permanent set as a function of the dimensions of the plate and the tensile properties of the material.

New frictional resistance law for smooth plates

Description: From measurements in the free boundary layer of a plate the laws governing the velocity distribution and a new resistance law are derived which, by increasing Reynolds number Re(sub x) afford lower resistance values than the logarithmic law. The transverse velocities, the shearing stress, and the mixing path profiles were also defined.

Large deflection of curved plates

Description: Report presenting a treatment of several problems on the large deflections of curved plates with compound curvature. Testing demonstrated that the effective width of the curved plates in longitudinal compression is reduced by the presence of an initial deflection function.

Bending of Rectangular Plates with Large Deflections

Description: The solution of von Karman's fundamental equations for large deflections of plates is presented for the case of a simply supported rectangular plate under combined edge compression and lateral loading. Numerical solutions are given for square plates and for rectangular plates with a width-span ratio of 3:1. The effective widths under edge compression are compared with effective widths according to von Karman, Bengston, Marguerre, and Cox and with experimental results by Ramberg, McPherson, and Levy. The deflections for a square plate under lateral pressure are compared with experimental and theoretical results by Kaiser. It is found that the effective widths agree closely with Marguerre's formula and with the experimentally observed values and that the deflections agree with the experimental results and with Kaiser's work.

Hydrodynamic characteristics over a range of speeds up to 80 feet per second of a rectangular modified flat plate having an aspect ratio of 0.25 and operating at several depths of submersion

Description: Results of an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics over an extended speed range of a rectangular modified flat plate having an aspect ratio of 0.25 and operating at several depths of submersion are presented. Comparisons between these data and data over a lower speed range on a similar aspect-ratio-0.25 flat plate but having one-half the thickness are presented. These comparisons show no significant differences at the low speeds. At high speeds and high angles of attack, where extensive cavitation was present, the lift coefficients were lower than would have been indicated by the results of the previous investigations and the present investigation at the lower angles of attack. A brief discussion and comparison of ventilation are presented which shows two types of planing bubble formation and the effect of increasing the thickness of the model on the ventilation boundary.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of modified rectangular flat plates having aspect ratios of 1.00 and 0.25 and operating near a free water surface

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on modified rectangular flat plates with aspect ratios of 1.00 and 0.25 mounted on a single strut and operating at several depths of submersion. The experimental investigation indicated that decreasing the aspect ratio or depth of submersion caused a decrease in the lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and lift-drag ratio.

A study of the efficiency of high-strength, steel, cellular-core sandwich plates in compression

Description: Structural efficiency curves are presented for high-strength, stainless-steel, cellular-core sandwich plates of various proportions subjected to compressive end loads for temperatures of 80 F and 600 F. Optimum proportions of sandwich plates for any value of the compressive loading intensity can be determined from the curves. The efficiency of steel sandwich plates of optimum proportions is compared with the efficiency of solid plates of high-strength steel and aluminum and titanium alloys at the two temperatures.

Thermal buckling of plates

Description: "An approximate method, based on large-deflection plate theory, for calculating the deflections of flat or initially imperfect plate subject to thermal buckling is outlined. The method is used to determine the deflections of a simply supported panel subjected to a tentlike temperature distribution over the plate surface. Experimental results for a particular panel are in good agreement with the theoretical results for the range of temperatures and deflections considered in the test" (p. 1).

Stress concentration around an open circular hole in a plate subjected to bending normal to the plane of the plate

Description: "An aluminum-alloy plate containing an open circular hole of diameter large compared with the thickness of the plate was subjected to bending forces normal to the plane of the plate. Deflection and strain measurements were taken for two different loads. Stress concentrations occurred at the edge of the hole and the maximum stresses were tangential to the hole at the ends of the transverse diameter. The maximum stress at the edge of the hole was 1.59 times the computed stress on the net section and 1.85 times the computed stress in a solid plate of the same dimensions subjected to the same bending forces" (p. 1).
