Evolution of Halides from Halogenated Plastics Exposed to Gamma Radiation

Description: Abstract: "The purpose of the investigation was to study the effects of gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source on the physical properties and halogen evolution from the plastics polyvinyl chloride and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene. Samples exposed for 2 to 28 days to a source of approximately 25,000 Roentgens per minute showed an appreciable evolution of both fluorine and chlorine. Analyses of Decay Curves of Irradiated Plastics

Description: The following report covers the results of a general program that was conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to investigate the effects on plastic materials of exposure to radiation in the pile. In the investigation, several plastics were irradiated, and on removal from the pile, their rates of decay were determined by measurement of gamma activity in an ionization chamber.

Use of Redux Adhesives for Bonding Metal

Description: Redux is a thermosetting synthetic resin manufactured by the Resinous Products & Chemical Co., Washington Square, Philadelphia 5, Pa. According to the manufacturer, it is intended for bonding metal to metal and metal to wood. It was apparently intended to replace rivets in aircraft structural parts and recent information indicates that a British airplane, the DeHaviland Dove, is in production using this resin. Stability of Florothene Under Exposure to Gamma Radiation

Description: The stability of fluorothene (polytrifluorochloroethylene, Kel-F) to gamma radiation has been investigated to estimate the probable life expectancy of fluorothene equipment exposed to Purex process solutions. Samples of fluorothene were exposed to total gamma radiation dosages up to 10 degree R. The results of these tests substantiate the findings reported by Sisman and Bopp in their compilation of data on the affects of radiation on plastics.
