Two-photon couplings of quarkonia with arbitrary angular momenta

Description: The observation of a large {gamma}{gamma} width for the {sup 1}D{sub 2} q{bar q} state {pi}{sub 2}(1670) suggests that the {gamma}{gamma} couplings of many orbitally-excited light q{bar q} states may be experimentally accessible. In this talk we present {gamma}{gamma} helicity amplitudes for q{bar q} states with general angular momenta {sup 1}l{sub j} and {sup 3}l{sub j}, and note some relations and selection rules that may be useful in spectroscopic classification of orbital excitations. 14 re… more

Interface effects on dose distributions in irradiated media

Description: It has long been recognized that nonuniformities in dose distributions may occur in the immediate vicinity of a boundary between two different media. Considerable work has been done to determine interface effects in media irradiated by photons or in media containing ..beta..- or ..cap alpha..-particle emitters. More recently interface effects have become of interest in additional problems, including pion radiotherapy and radiation effects in electronic microcircuits in space vehicles. These pro… more

Quantum Chromodynamics is tested against measurements of the transverse momentum spectrum of single photon production ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma} + X), double photon production ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma}{gamma} + X), and the distribution of cos{theta} * in photon-jet events ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma}{sub J} + X). The status of the glueball candidates theta(1690), iota(1460), and xi(220), and the decays J/PHI ..-->.. ..gamma.. Vector Vector are reviewed. A coupled channel analysis of iota(1460) decays to K anti K..pi.., rho rho, ..omega omega.., and ..gamma..rho is presented which may help to understand the pseudoscalar sector in radiative J/PHI deca… more

The eta/sub c/ is observed in three modes, J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..eta/sub c/, (eta/sub c/ ..-->.. rho anti rho, eta..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, and phi phi). Using the phi phi mode, the eta/sub c/ spin-parity is determined to be 0/sup -/. Production of high energy density in anti N-nucleus interactions

Description: The results of an investigation of anti p- (and to a lesser extent) anti d- nucleus interactions are reported. The technique involves following the classical production and propagation of mesons (..pi..,K/sup +/, K/sup 0/, K/sup -/, K/sup 0/, K*, eta, ..omega.., phi) and baryons (N,..lambda..,..sigma..) in nuclei after antiparticle annihilation. It is found that small regions of the nucleus can be raised to sufficiently high energy densities that some predictions of a quark-gluon phase transiti… more

Photon-Photon Physics with the Mark II at PEP

Description: Photon-photon interactions are studied with the Mark II detector at PEP. The inclusive production of charged hadrons at large transverse momenta and the exclusive production of meson pairs at large invarient mass are compared with recent hard scattering calculations. Copious inclusive production of K/sup 0/'s at large transverse momenta provides evidence for charm production. The radiative width of the f'(1520) is measured via its K/sub s//sup 0/ anti K/sub s//sup 0/ decay mode.

Role of valons in low-p/sub T/ physics

Description: Hadron structure is described in the framework in which a nucleon is treated as a composite system of three valence quark clusters, called valons. Their momentum distribution is extracted from deep inelastic scattering data. The valon representation provides a quantitative description of the recombination function, which characterizes the hadronization of quarks. A formalism is then developed in terms of valons and quarks such that the inclusive distributions for hadronic reactions at low-p/sub… more

Mechanism of pion absorption in complex nuclei

Description: Basic geometrical arguments are used to analyze the A dependence of the total pion absorption cross section, the effective number of nucleons sharing the pion momentum and energy, and the proton yields from ..pi../sup +/- and ..pi../sup -/-induced reactions. The results are consistent with the pions penetrating some distance through the nuclear volume and annihilating on a pair of nucleons. 3 figures.

Neutral pion photoproduction of the nucleon near threshold

Description: Neutral pion photoproduction on the nucleon near threshold is investigated using a dynamical model. It is shown that the commonly used procedure, based on an analytical continuation of the K-matrix to the unphysical region, is not compatible to a dynamical approach. We show that the final state interaction (FSI) amplitude derived from a dynamical model could involve large cancellation between the different pion photoproduction mechanisms. This leads that the FSI due to the intermediate {pi}{sup… more
