Asymmetries between strange and antistrange particle production inpion-proton interactions

Description: Recent measurements of the asymmetries between Feynman x-distributions of strange and antistrange hadrons in {pi}{sup -}A interactions show a strong effect as a function of x{sub F}. We calculate strange hadron production in the context of the intrinsic model and make predictions for particle/antiparticle asymmetries in these interactions.

Production of K0(S) lambda and gamma in 100-GeV/c pion proton interactions

Description: Results are presented on the production of K{sub s}{sup 0}, {Lambda} and {gamma} and {gamma} in 100 GeV/c {pi}{sup -}p interactions in the 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber at NAL. The cross sections for the production of {pi}{sup 0}, K{sub s}{sup 0}, {Lambda} and {bar {Lambda}} are derived and compared with those produced in other reactions as functions of the energy. The average number of {pi}{sup 0} produced per collision is the same as in 100 GeV/c pp reactions.

Inclusive gamma K0(s) lambda0 and anti-lambda0 production by 205-GeV/c pion proton interactions

Description: Neutral decays and {gamma} conversions have been analyzed in an exposure of the NAL 30 hydrogen bubble chamber to 205 GeV/c pions. This paper presents preliminary results on inclusive cross sections for the production of {Upsilon}'s, K{sub s}{sup 0}'s, {Lambda}{sup 0}'s and {bar {Lambda}}{sup 0}'s by 205 GeV/c {pi}{sup -}p interactions. The experiment was done in the NAL 30 hydrogen bubble chamber. Six hundred and sixty-four neutral decays (or conversions) found in a scan of 3058 {pi}{sup -}p interactions were measured. During measurement, three percent of these events were rejected as not pointing to the primary vertex. Another 29% were discarded by a fiducial volume cut on the neutral vertex.

Interpretation of experimental J{sub PC} exotic signals

Description: The authors investigate theoretical interpretations of the 1.4 GeV J{sup PC} exotic resonance reported by the E852 collaboration. It is argued that interpretation in terms of a hybrid meson is untenable. A K-matrix analysis shows that the 1.4 GeV enhancement in the E852 {eta}{pi} data can be understood as an interference of a non-resonant Deck-type background and a resonance at 1.6 GeV. A final state rescattering calculation shows that the 1.6 GeV hybrid has a {eta}{pi} width which is bounded above by 57 {+-} 14 MeV.

Measurement of the polarization parameter for the reaction $pi$$sup - $p$Yields$$pi$$sup 0$n between 1.03 and 1.79 GeV/c

Description: From 2nd international conference on elementary particles; Aixen- Provence, France (6 Sep 1973). Measurements of the polarization parameter for the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup o/n were made at the five momenta 1.03, 1.245, 1.44, 1.5 and 1.79 GeV/c. A polarized target was used, with polarizations achieved ranging from 48 to 57%. Salient features of the experiment were the use of neutron counters for time-of-flight measurements as well as angular information and the use of optical spark chambers, seven to eight radiation lengths thick, for the detection of the gamma rays from the decay of the pi /sup o/. The center-ofmass angular range covered by the 20 neutron counters was typically --.78 < cos THETA /sub c.m. <.87. For each momentum there are approximately 10,000 events which fit pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup o/ n with a confide nce level of at least 10%. (auth)

Reaction $pi$$sup -$p$Yields$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$p at 25 and 40 GeV/c

Description: The reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup +/p was measured at 25 and 40 GeV/c at the Serpuknov Proton Accelerator. The production cross section as a function of beam energy, momentum transfer, and 3 pi mass is presented, and results of the partial-wave analysis of the 3 pi system are discussed. (auth)

Differential cross sections and scaling in $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ X$sup -$p at 25 and 40 GeV/c

The reaction pi /sup -/p yields X/sup -/p was investigated at P/sup inc/ = 25 and 40 GeV/c at the Serpuknov Accelerator. The differential inelastic cross sections DELTA /sup 2/ sigma // DELTA t DELTA M/sup 2/ are presented as a function of s, t, and M/sup 2/ (X/sup -/). The scaling hypothesis was tested. (auth)

How to identify resonances above the phase-shift analyses region

Description: Interesting regularities were observed in the $pi$p backward elastic- scattering data at intermediate energies with respect to the effect of resonances. In addition, the reaction process is found to be peripheral. It is pointed out that one should be able to determine the properties of resonances above the region in which the phase-shift analyses were performed. (auth)

Search for Pomeron--Pomeron-2$pi$ events in 205 GeV/c $pi$$sup -$p interactions

Description: Pomeron- pomeron-2 pi vertices were sought in the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/p at 205 GeV/c. From a sample of 1 86 of these events, about 2/3 were extracted for which the rapidity ordering of the four outgoing particles makes them candidates for the double-Pomeron exchange process (i.e., the fastest and the slowest particle are respectively a pi /sup -/ and a proton). A separation from single-Pomeron processes was attempted with the help of a rapidity triangle plot. The number of possible double-Pomeron-type events was also estimated from a Regge-propagator fit to the nonhomogeneous distribution of the events within this triangle. The number of such events obtained by either method gives a cross section upper limit of 85 mu b for double-Pomeron exchange, consistent with the predictions of a pion-pole dominance model. (auth)

Diffraction dissociation in 205 GeV/c $pi$$sup -$p two- and four-prong interactions

Description: From meeting of the division of particles and fields; Berkeley, California, USA (13 Aug 1973). Data are presented on diffraction dissociation in pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/p and pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi /sup - / pi /sup +/p interactions at 205 GeV/c. Mass spectra and cross sections for pion dissociation and nuclear dissociation are presented. (LBS)
