Pilot plant test plan, Task IX: technical support. Industrial Low-Btu Fuel Gas Demonstration-Plant Program

Description: The objective of the AAG pilot plant operation is to provide process data for the gasification and related sections of the demonstration plant. Since the pilot plant will not operate at the actual pressure of the demonstration plant, it is planned to perform tests at two different pressures to obtain a sound basis for pressure scale-up. Other objectives are listed briefly.

Removal of silica from Raft River geothermal water

Description: Lack of sufficient quantities of clean surface or near-surface water at Raft River for cooling purposes dictates that cooled geothermal fluid, effluent from the Raft River 5 MW(e) Pilot Power Plant, must also be used as condenser coolant. Prior testing revealed that a water-treatment system would be required to reduce silica and calcium concentrations of the cooling fluid. The water-treatment system specified was to use dolomitic lime for both pH adjustment and source of magnesium. The dolomiti… more

Industrial Low Btu Fuel Gas Demonstration Plant Program: Phase I. Quarterly and annual report, 19 September 1977-31 December 1977

Description: A major problem which arose during the reporting period was that of the completion of the required environmental analysis in order not to impact Phase II of the program. This problem was addressed and a proposed solution was agreed to. A sole source procurement justification for Energy Impact Associates was prepared and submitted to DOE for approval. This sole source procurement will enable construction start as scheduled (8 months after start of Phase II) whereas a competitive procurement of t… more

Solar Pilot Plant, Phase I. Preliminary design report. Volume II, Book 2. Central receiver optical model users manual. CDRL item 2. [HELIAKI code]

Description: HELIAKI is a FORTRAN computer program which simulates the optical/thermal performance of a central receiver solar thermal power plant for the dynamic conversion of solar-generated heat to electricity. The solar power plant which this program simulates consists of a field of individual sun tracking mirror units, or heliostats, redirecting sunlight into a cavity, called the receiver, mounted atop a tower. The program calculates the power retained by that cavity receiver at any point in time or th… more

Direct conversion of light hydrocarbon gases to liquid fuel

Description: The objective of this program is to investigate the direct conversion of light gaseous hydrocarbons, such as those produced during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis or as a product of gasification, to liquid transportation fuels via a partial oxidation process. The process will be tested in an existing pilot plant to obtain credible mass balances. Specific objectives to be met include determination of optimal process conditions, investigation of various processing options (e.g. feed injection, product … more

TRU Waste Management Program cost/schedule optimization analysis

Description: The cost/schedule optimization task is a necessary function to insure that program goals and plans are optimized from a cost and schedule aspect. Results of this study will offer DOE information with which it can establish, within institutional constraints, the most efficient program for the long-term management and disposal of contact handled transuranic waste (CH-TRU). To this end, a comprehensive review of program cost/schedule tradeoffs has been made, to identify any major cost saving oppor… more

Mineralogy in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility stratigraphic horizon

Description: Forty-six samples were selected for this study from two cores, one extending 50 ft up through the roof of the WIPP facility and the other penetrating 50 ft below the facility floor. These samples, selected from approximately every other foot of core length, represent the major lithologies present in the immediate vicinity of the WIPP facility horizon: ''clean'' halite, polyhalitic halite, argillaceous halite, and mixed polyhalitic-argillaceous halite. Samples were analyzed for non-NaCl mineralo… more

Industrial fuel gas demonstration plant program. Overall program plan for Task IX. Technical support. Volume I. Plan, schedule and organization. (Deliverable No. 46)

Description: The Industrial Fuel Gas Demonstration Plant Program (MLGW/DOE), Contract ET-77-C-01-2582, has been slowed due to lack of an adequate data base for demonstration plant design. This design data base is to be developed by Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) at their U-GAS pilot plant. While initial data and operating results from the pilot plant have been encouraging, ash-balanced operation with coal using the technique of ash agglomeration has proven to be more difficult than originally envisioned.… more

Mechanical compaction of Waste Isolation Pilot Plant simulated waste

Description: The investigation described in this report acquired experimental information about how materials simulating transuranic (TRU) waste compact under axial compressive stress, and used these data to define a model for use in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) disposal room analyses. The first step was to determine compaction curves for various simultant materials characteristic of TRU waste. Stress-volume compaction curves for various combinations of these materials were than derived to represe… more

Predicted temperature/time histories resulting from the burial of nuclear waste canisters in bedded salt

Description: This report provides computed thermal mappings for bedded salt surrounding canisters containing nuclear waste. This information can be used to study the possible migration of fluids within bedded salt under the influence of thermal gradients created by the heat-generating nuclear waste. The results presented were obtained from CINDA thermal models. Three different drift/canister configurations were modeled. The thermal conductivity of the salt was assumed to be temperature dependent while both … more
