Correlation of alluvial deposits at the Nevada Test Site

Description: Because characteristics of rock layers and problems in drilling must be studied before radioactive waste can be safely contained, an evaluation was made of methods for correlating alluvial deposits at Yucca Flat of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Although correlation of Tertiary volcanic tuff beds at the NTS has been successfully achieved, correlation of stratigraphic zones in the overlying alluvium has posed technical difficulties. We have evaluated several methods for correlating alluvial deposit… more

Initial evaluation of photographic data of F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops

Description: Photographic data for the Savannah River Plant (SRP) were reviewed for 1961 through 1987 to determine the value of this photography in estimating the timing and extent of the F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops along the upper Four Mile Creek floodplain. In excess of 15,000 frames of photography of the SRP were reviewed. The quality of the photography varied widely and included panchromatic (black and white), natural color, and false color infrared. Altitudes of the photography ranged from 2,0… more

Effects of Overpressures in Group Shelters on Animals and Dummies

Description: S>Relative biological hazards of blast were studied in two types of communal air-raid shelters during Shots 1 and 8. Dogs, restrained within the shelters during detonation, were studied pathologically and clinically for blast injuries. Two anthropometric dummies were test objects for displacement studies utilizing high-speed photography. Physical data included pressure vs time and air-drag determinations. During Shot 1, animals sustained marked blast damages (hemorrhages in lungs and abdominal … more

PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF A HYDROGEN-COOLED IN-PILE LOOP FOR THE EGCR

Description: A discussion is presented concerning the preliminary design and hazards evaluation of a H-cooled in-pile experimental loop for operation in the large double-walled through-tube in the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR) at Oak Ridge. This loop is designed to permit experimentation with full-scale fuel element configurations up to 8 in. OD, at inlet gas temperatures of 600 to 950 deg F at 300 psig, and experimental power levels up to 500 kw. The results of a preliminary hazards evaluation ind… more

Automated computer analysis of plasma-streak traces from SCYLLAC

Description: An automated computer analysis technique that locates and references the approximate centroid of single- or dual-streak traces from the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory SCYLLAC facility is described. The technique also determines the plasma-trace width over a limited self-adjusting region. The plasma traces are recorded with streak cameras on Polaroid film, then scanned and digitized for processing. The analysis technique uses scene segmentation to separate the plasma trace from a reference fid… more

Combustion of ultrafine coal/water mixtures and their application in gas turbines: Final report

Description: The feasibility of using coal-water fuels (CWF) in gas turbine combustors has been demonstrated in recent pilot plant experiments. The demands of burning coal-water fuels with high flame stability, complete combustion, low NO/sub x/ emission and a resulting fly ash particle size that will not erode turbine blades represent a significant challenge to combustion scientists and engineers. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires that the variation of the structure of CWF flames, i.e., … more

Phase distribution measurements in narrow rectangular channels using image-processing techniques

Description: Phase distribution of air-water flow in a narrow rectangular channel is examined using image-processing techniques. Ink is added to the water, and clear channel walls were used to allow high-speed, still photographs and video tape to be taken of the air-water flow field. Flow field images are digitized and stored in a Macintosh IIci computer using a frame grabber board. Local grey levels are related to liquid thickness in the flow channel using a calibration fixture. Image-processing shareware … more

Effects of particle characteristics on performance of RR5K PETN

Description: A particle characterization of production lots of RR5K PETN has been completed. Prediction models were derived which identify those particle characteristics which influence sensitivity and performance. Those factors which have a positive influence on threshold burst current were also found to have a positive influence on transit time. The models may be useful in screening new lots of PETN prior to test firing. In general, large distributions of shapes and sizes, with the larger particles being … more

Stress-Relief Displacements Induced by Drilling--Applications to Holographic Measurements of in Situ Stress

Description: The holographic stressmeter is an instrument which has been developed at Caltech to allow determination of the complete stress tensor from in situ borehole measurements. The stressmeter uses double-exposure holographic interferometry to record the displacements induced by the drilling of a small sidehole into the borehole wall. The local stresses, which are the result of the far-field stresses, concentrated at the borehole, cause deformation of the surface of the borehole wall in the vicinity o… more

Streak camera techniques

Description: An introduction to streak camera geometry, experimental techniques, and limitations are presented. Equations, graphs and charts are included to provide useful data for optimizing the associated optics to suit each experiment. A simulated analysis is performed on simultaneity and velocity measurements. An error analysis is also performed for these measurements utilizing the Monte Carlo method to simulate the distribution of uncertainties associated with simultaneity-time measurements.

Fuel Cycle Program, a Boiling Water Reactor Research and Development Program. Third Quarterly Report, January 1961-March 1961

Description: The continuing analysis of the VBWR core resulted in refinements in the calculations for reactivity in voids, flux leakage and resonance escape probability. The Zircaloy cladding for 25 fuel assemblies was received and passed inspection. Preliminary measurements of VBWR flux oscillations, used to develop instrumentation and data interpretation techniques, showed random normally-distributed oscillations with a predominant frequency of 0.5 to 1.0 cycles/second. A model for analog computer simulat… more

Time-resolved soft-x-ray studies of energy transport in layered and planar laser-driven targets

Description: New low-energy x-ray diagnostic techniques are used to explore energy-transport processes in laser heated plasmas. Streak cameras are used to provide 15-psec time-resolution measurements of subkeV x-ray emission. A very thin (50 ..mu..g/cm/sup 2/) carbon substrate provides a low-energy x-ray transparent window to the transmission photocathode of this soft x-ray streak camera. Active differential vacuum pumping of the instrument is required. The use of high-sensitivity, low secondary-electron en… more

Streak camera recording of interferometer fringes

Description: The use of an electronic high-speed camera in the streaking mode to record interference fringe motion from a velocity interferometer is discussed. Advantages of this method over the photomultiplier tube-oscilloscope approach are delineated. Performance testing and data for the electronic streak camera are discussed. The velocity profile of a mylar flyer accelerated by an electrically exploded bridge, and the jump-off velocity of metal targets struck by these mylar flyers are measured in the cam… more

The pipe is nominally 28 in O.D., 1400 feet long with wall thicknesses of 0.9 and 1.75 inches. The entire effort was conducted over a period of six weeks and was implemented on a strictly non-interference basis with the main Biomass Program. Three types of data were acquired during shore and ocean based … more
