Description: Thin films (approx. 1 ..mu..m thick) and large grains (approx. 40 x 40 ..mu..m) of InP were epitaxially deposited on low-cost recrystallized CdS (RXCdS) substrates at 280/sup 0/C by planar reactive deposition. Avalanche transistor pulser for fast-gated operation of micro-channel plate image-intensifiers

Description: Transistors operated in the avalanche mode are employed to generate a 1000 volt 10 to 30 nsec wide pulse with less than 4 nsec rise and fall times. This pulse is resistively attenuated to approximately equal to 270 volts and drives the image intensifier tube which is a load of approximately equal to 200 pf. Liquid scintillators for optical-fiber applications

Description: A multicomponent liquid scintillator solution for use as a radiation-to-light converter in conjunction with a fiber optic transmission system. The scintillator includes a quantity of 1, 2, 4, 5, 3H, 6H, 1 OH, tetrahydro-8-trifluoromethyl (1) benzopyrano (9, 9a, 1-gh) quinolizin-10-one (Coumarin) as a solute in a fluor solvent such as benzyl alcohol or pseudo-cumene. The use of BIBUQ as an additional or primary solute is also disclosed.

Time-Resolved Doubly Bent Crystal X-Ray Spectrometer

Description: X-ray spectroscopy is an essential tool in high temperature plasma research. We describe a time-resolved x-ray spectrometer suitable for measuring spectra in harsh environments common to many very high energy density laboratory plasma sources. New liquid scintillators for fiber-optic applications

Description: New long-wavelength-emitting, high-speed, liquid scintillators have been developed and tailored specifically for plasma diagnostic experiments employing fiber optics. These scintillators offer significant advantages over commercially available plastic scintillators in terms of sensitivity and bandwidth. FWHM response times as fast as 350 ps have been measured. Emission spectra, time response data, and relative sensitivity information are presented.

Comparison of cesium iodide and gold photocathodes for x-ray streak cameras

Description: X-ray streak cameras at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory use gold transmission photocathodes for x-ray detection. Other photocathode materials which might provide improved sensitivity without loss of temporal resolution are of interest. Of particular interest are dielectrics such as cesium iodide. Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Technical progress report, September 1-November 30, 1979

Description: Several all sputter deposited Cu/sub 2/S/CdS cells have been prepared to date with J/sub SC/ approx. = 3 mA/cm/sup 2/ under simulated AM1 illumination. The best AM1 conversion efficiency obtained is 0.6%. This is shown to be typical of sputtered CdS in Cu/sub 2/S/CdS cells investigated to date. The sputtered Cu/sub 2/S appears to be satisfactory for solar cell applications. Description: Off-stoiciometry CdS coatings with resistivities of about 10..cap omega..-cm have been deposited by a cyclic reactive sputtering process where the H/sub 2/S injection is periodically switched on and off. Commercializatzon of thick film solar cells. Quarterly progress report, September 21, 1979-December 31, 1979

Description: Starting materials for the preparation of thick film cadmium sulfide and cadmium telluride solar cells have been comminuted. Initial trial films of cadmium sulfide showed that during the next phase of this work, the printing of films, one of the major problem areas will be to obtain sufficient reflow in the printed films to remove the screen-caused variation in film thickness. The thin areas corresponding to the screen pattern caused pinholes to form in the fired parts.

Readout techniques and radiation damage of undoped cesium iodide

Description: Several readout techniques for undoped CsI have been studied which utilize the fast scintillation component for speed, and the high photon yield for good energy resolution. Quantum yields have been measured for samples up to 30 cm in length using photomultiplier tubes, wavelength shifters, and silicon photodiodes. Photoelectronic properties of zinc phosphide crystals, films and heterojunctions. Quarterly progress report No. 2, July 1-September 30, 1979

Description: The closed tube horizontal growth method has been pursued for the growth of single crystals of Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/. The rate of material transport was increased by increasing the temperature difference between source and growth regions and by decreasing the distance involved.
