Synthesis of Mesoporous Aluminophosphates as Potential Catalysts in the Upgrading Petroleum Feedstocks

Improved Catalysts for Heavy Oil Upgrading Based on Zeolite Y Nanoparticles Encapsulated Stable Nanoporous Host

Description: The addition of hydrothermally-aged zeolite Y precursor to an SBA-15 synthesis mixture under a mildly acidic condition resulted in the formation of a mesoporous aluminosilicate catalyst, AlSBA-15. The Al-SBA-15 mesoporous catalyst contains strong Br{umlt o}nsted acid sites and aluminum (Al) stabilized in a totally tetrahedral coordination. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalyst varied as a function of the synthesis conditions. The catalyst possessed surface areas ranging between 690 and 850 m{sup 2}/g, pore sizes ranging from 5.6 to 7.5 nm, and pore volumes up 1.03 cm{sup 3}, which were comparable to the parent SBA-15 synthesized under similar conditions. Two wt % Al was present in the catalyst that was obtained from the reaction mixture that contained the highest Al content. The Al remained stable in totally tetrahedral coordination after calcination at a temperature of 550 C. The Al-SBA-15 mesoporous catalyst showed significant catalytic activity for cumene dealkylation, and the activity increased as the amount of zeolite precursor added to the SBA-15 mixture was increased. In preparation for the final phase of the project, the catalyst was embedded into a psuedoboemite alumina (catapal B) matrix and then formed into pellets. In the final phase of the project, the pelletized catalyst is being evaluated for the conversion of a heavy petroleum feedstock to naphtha and middle distillates. This phase was significantly delayed during the past six months due to a serious malfunction of the fume hoods in the Clark Atlanta University's Research Center for Science and Technology, where the project is being conducted. The fume hood system was repaired and the catalyst evaluation is now underway.

BPO crude oil analysis data base user`s guide: Methods, publications, computer access correlations, uses, availability

Description: The Department of Energy (DOE) has one of the largest and most complete collections of information on crude oil composition that is available to the public. The computer program that manages this database of crude oil analyses has recently been rewritten to allow easier access to this information. This report describes how the new system can be accessed and how the information contained in the Crude Oil Analysis Data Bank can be obtained.

Preliminary evaluation of a process using plasma reactions to desulfurize heavy oils. Final report

Description: Western Research Institute (WRI) has conducted exploratory experiments on the use of microwave-induced plasmas to desulfurize heavy oils. Batch mode experiments were conducted in a quartz reactor system using various reactive and nonreactive plasmas. In these experiments a high-sulfur asphalt was exposed to various plasmas, and the degree of conversion to distillate, gas, and solids was recorded. Products from selected experiments were analyzed to determine if the plasma exposure had resulted in a significant reduction in sulfur content. Exploratory experiments were conducted using reactive plasmas generated from hydrogen and methane and nonreactive plasmas generated from nitrogen. The effects of varying exposure duration, sample temperature, and location of the sample with respect to the plasma discharge were investigated. For comparative purposes two experiments were conducted in which the sample was heated under nitrogen with no plasma exposure. Distillates containing approximately 28% less sulfur than the feedstock represented the maximum desulfurization attained in the plasma experiments. It does not appear that plasma reactions using the simple configurations employed in this study represent a viable method for the desulfurization of heavy oils.

Task 4.7 -- Diesel fuel desulfurization. Semi-annual report, January 1--June 30, 1995

Description: Reductions in the maximum permissible sulfur content of diesel fuel to less than 0.05 wt% will require deep desulfurization technologies to meet these standards. In some refineries, a new hydrogenation catalyst may be required for diesel fuel production. Some of the major components of diesel fuel are dibenzothiophenes and its alkyl derivatives. These components are desulfurized by the Rhodococcus rhodocrous IGTS8 enzymes. But when they are highly diluted with other hydrocarbons in the diesel fuel, will there be enough specificity for their absorption and degradation by the enzyme systems? The extent to which a diesel fuel or middle distillate feed can be desulfurized by desulfurization enzymes will be determined. In addition, the effectiveness of molybdenum sulfide catalysts in removing sulfur from the middle distillate cut will be determined. The catalyst preparation involves creation of the molybdenum sulfide in a highly dispersed form essentially between the layers of a hydrotalcite material, which is then dissolved away to expose the active sites.

Winter fuels report, week ending October 20, 1995

Description: Weekly estimates of distillate stocks (131.6 MMB) are now 2.1 MMB below the lower bound of the three year average, and the current rate of increase is also lower than the average of the past three years. Heating fuels are 48% of the total inventory and have fallen 1.3 MMB during the past week. Distillate production dipped while demand increased. The supply of propane for the current week declined 1.5 MMB from the prior reporting period but is in the normal range for the time of the year. The natural gas supply available for distribution in August 1995 was estimated to be 1,795 BCF, which was almost unchanged from the previous year. The August 1995 consumption of 1,502 BCF was 6% greater than the previous year. This gas volume included 276 BCF injected into underground storage and 16 BCF exported. In July 1995, major gas pipeline companies paid an average of $1.91/KCF for gas purchased from domestic producers, which was a decrease from $2.03 in the previous month. The price for imported gas was $1.10/KCF. Heating oil prices showed little movement during this period, as did propane prices.

A NEW CLASS OF MESOPOROUS ALUMINOPHOSPHATES FOR APPLICATION IN PERTOLEUM REFINING

Description: This project focuses on the synthesis of mesoporous aluminophosphate and aluminosilicates as catalysts for application in the conversion of large petroleum feedstock compounds to useful middle distillates and naphtha transportation fuels. Summarized herein, is our research progress for September 1, 2001 to August 31, 2002. The synthesis of aluminophosphates in the presence of nonionic surfactants and block co-polymers were explored over a wide range of synthesis variables such as temperature, Al/P ratio, pH and surfactants/polymer concentrations. In most cases, the resulting products were found to be amorphous. A partially ordered aluminophosphate mesophase was obtained in the presence of Brij 56 non-ionic surfactant. Further characterization to determine the phase type (e.g. hexagonal lamellar or cubic) of this product is pending. The amorphous nature of the products obtained using these classes of surfactants are in contrast to highly ordered aluminophosphates mesophases obtained in the presence of cationic quaternary ammonium surfactants, such as cetyltrimethylammonium detailed in a previous report. The synthesis of pure-silica and aluminosilicate mesophases of different type and quality were also conducted over a wide range of variables such as temperature, Si/Al ratio, pH and surfactants/polymer concentrations. However characterization of the phase type and quality of the materials produced is pending due to a severe and extended malfunction of the X-Ray Diffractometer. Nitrogen porosimetry of selected calcined samples showed various absorption isotherm with some samples showing type IV with a large step in the mesoporous range. Surface area of the samples varied and maximized at approximately 1000 m{sup 2}/g, which is typically reported for materials of this type. Further characterization of the sample will be conducted following repair of the X-Ray Diffractometer.

Refining and end use study of coal liquids. Quarterly report, July - September 1996

Description: Bechtel, with Southwest Research Institute, Amoco Oil R&D, and the M. W. Kellogg Co. as subcontractors, initiated a study on November 1, 1993, for the U.S. Department of Energy`s (DOE`s) Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) to determine the most cost effective and suitable combination of existing petroleum refinery processes needed to make specification transportation fuels or blending stocks, from direct and indirect coal liquefaction product liquids. This 47-month study, with an approved budget of $4.4 million dollars, is being performed under DOE Contract Number DE-AC22-93PC91029. A key objective is to determine the most desirable ways of integrating coal liquefaction liquids into existing petroleum refineries to produce transportation fuels meeting current and future, e.g. year 2000, Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA) standards. An integral part of the above objectives is to test the fuels or blends produced and compare them with established ASTM fuels. The comparison will include engine tests to ascertain compliance of the fuels produced with CAAA and other applicable fuel quality and performance standards. The final part of the project includes a detailed economic evaluation of the cost of processing the coal liquids to their optimum products. The cost analyses is for the incremental processing cost; in other words, the feed is priced at zero dollars. The study reflects costs for operations using state of the art refinery technology; no capital costs for building new refineries is considered. Some modifications to the existing refinery may be required. Economy of scale dictates the minimum amount of feedstock that should be processed. The major efforts conducted during the third quarter of 1996 were in the areas of hydrotreating production runs and FCC production run. 3 figs., 8 tabs.
