A Study of Relationships Between Sociometric Scores and Personality Self-Ratings

Description: There is at present no way to tell what the correlations between personality self-rating scores and sociometric scores. One might suppose, as a rule of thumb, that such a correlation would be higher than .50 in most groups. This relationship, between sociometric scores and scores on personality self-rating scales, is the subject under investigation in the present study.

Personality Enhancement and the Summer Camp Experience

Description: The study was undertaken to discover if the summer camp experience enhanced personality traits of participants in the camp program. The study was implemented at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas, during the summer of 1985. Utilized were analyses of variance and two types of factor analyses: principal-components analysis with varimax rotation and principal axis factoring with oblique rotation of factor matrices elicited. Five personality areas were analyzed--sociability, independence, achievement, environmental awareness, and spirituality. Spirituality emerged so strongly that it was removed from further analyses. Remaining personality areas emerged, but groupings of variables, especially those relating to achievement and independence, suggest an inherent commonality among the complex facets of personality. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends further investigation and careful replication.

Personality Characteristics Considered Important for Children by Parents

Description: The primary research questions dealt with whether parents consider different personality characteristics of importance for boys and girls. Data were collected by conducting a telephone survey of a random sample of parents in the city of Denton with children under the age of eighteen living in the household. Respondents were asked whether they considered the personality characteristics of responsibility, strict obedience, being respectful of the opinions of others, showing good manners, being independent, and having loyalty to a religion not important, somewhat important, or very important for boys and girls. Of the respondents fifty-nine were fathers and one hundred and twenty-one were mothers. The analysis of the data revealed that mothers and fathers have similar attitudes concerning the importance of these personality characteristics.

Parental Perceptions of Abused Children

Description: Although numerous studies examining variables related to child abuse have been done in recent years, little is known about how abusing parents perceive their abused children's attitudes and behaviors. The present study attempted to examine parental perceptions of personality characteristics of children as a function of whether the parent abused the child. The Personality Inventory for Children (PIC) was utilized to obtain parental perceptions of their children's attitudes and behaviors. Twenty parents consisting of 10 abusers and 10 nonabusers were contacted through social agencies. Parents and children were matched for age, sex, and race. Of the 16 personality variables studied, only one significantly differentiated the two groups. Abused children were perceived as significantly more withdrawn than the nonabused matched sample. Results of this study suggest that various personality types are involved in the abusive cycle. Further research is needed to explore this promising area.

The Personality Pattern of Hyperactive Boys: Adjustments in Internality, Self-Esteem, and Anxiety

Description: During the past 80 years, similar descriptions of a hyperactive behavior pattern in children have appeared in medical, educational, and psychological literature. Hyperactivity has been conceptualized as a character disorder, an organic disorder, and, most recently, as a behavior disorder. In this study, hyperactivity was explained in interactional terms, using Rotter's social learning theory of personality. Little consideration has been given in research to the influence of an abnormally high activity level upon personality development during childhood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the general influence of negative interactions associated with hyperactivity upon the organization of four personality constructs: locus of control, self-esteem, trait anxiety, and state anxiety.

Social and Emotional Influences of Home Life on Children in School

Description: The problem of this investigation is three-fold in its objectives: (1) to discover what authorities in the field of education believe about personality in relation to home and school influences, (2) to determine the personality characteristics and the home status of a group of third-grade children in the Stonewall Jackson School of Denton, Texas, and (3) to make analyses and comparisons in an effort to determine whether any perceptible relationships exist between home status and the degree of self and social adjustment possessed by the pupils.
