Interactions of tailings leachate with local liner materials found at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

Description: The mill tailings site at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania is the first mill site to receive remedial action under the Department of Energy's Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Program. Part of this remedial action will require excavating the 53,500 m/sup 3/ (70,000 yd/sup 3/) of tailings on the site having a specific activity exceeding 100 pCi/g, and encapsulating these contaminated tailings in a clay-lined cell. As part of the remedial action effort, Pacific Northwest Laboratory has been studying … more

Penn Grade Micellar Displacement project. First annual report, June 1975--June 1976

Description: The main objective of the Penn Grade-ERDA Micellar Displacement Project is to assess and hopefully, demonstrate the feasibility of commercial application of the micellar-polymer process for tertiary oil recovery from a rather large, but relatively ''tight'' section of the Bradford Third Sand. The initial phase of this project involves pertinent core and field injectivity measurements from a freshly drilled well, as a basis for assessing the feasibility of a small demonstration test flood to be … more

Radiological assessment report for the Lansdowne property, 105-107 East Stratford Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October-December 1984

Description: Areas with elevated levels of radioactivity were found throughout both residences, as well as on the surrounding property. Contamination was also found in the garage behind the 105 East structure. The 105 East residence had substantially more contamination than the 107 East residence, as was expected. The chimneys, particularly the rear chimney, from the 105 East residence had extensive contamination, indicating that contaminated materials may have been burned at the site. The high background r… more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 6. Northeast region

Description: In the Northeast region, the physical potential for all sites exceeds 33,000 MW of capacity with an estimated average annual energy of some 153,000 GWH. By comparison, the available data represent about 6% of the total capacity and 11% of the hydroelectric energy potential estimated for the entire US. Of the total capacity estimated for the region, 6100 MW has been installed. The remainder (27,200 MW, excluding the undeveloped capacity in the New England States) is the maximum which could be de… more

Opportunities for coal to methanol conversion

Description: The accumulations of mining residues in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania offer a unique opportunity to convert the coal content into methanol that could be utilized in that area as an alternative to gasoline or to extend the supplies through blending. Additional demand may develop through the requirements of public utility gas turbines located in that region. The cost to run this refuse through coal preparation plants may result in a clean coal at about $17.00 per ton. After gasifica… more

Effects of the DOE proposals for new source performance standards for utility boilers firing anthracite coal

Description: Currently, the most important expansion market for anthracite is the electrical utilities/power generation area, where the major competitors are other forms of coal. However, anthracite is more expensive to mine than bituminous coal and requires more expensive boilers and other plant equipment. Advantages of anthracite include its geographic location and, most importantly, its low sulfur content and slightly higher heating value relative to bituminous coal. Because of these factors, anthracite … more

Calculation of particulate dispersion in a design-basis tornadic storm from the Babcock and Wilcox Plant, Leechburg, Pennsylvania

Description: A three-dimensional numerical model is used to calculate ground-level air concentration and deposition (due to precipitation scavenging) after a hypothetical tornado strike at the Babcock and Wilcox Plutonium Fabrication Facility at Leechburg, Pennsylvania. Plutonium particles lss than 20 ..mu..m in diameter are assumed to be lifted into the tornadic storm cell by the vortex. The rotational characteristics of the tornadic storm are embedded within the larger mesoscale flow of the storm system. … more

All are low-temperature projects (process heat at temperatures below 212/sup 0/F). Performance results gathered by each contractor's data acquisition system are presented and project costs and problems encountered are summarized. Flat-plate, evacuated-tube, and line-focus collectors are all represented in the program, with collector array areas ran… more

Description: Detailed megascopic and microscopic petrographic analyses were conducted on samples of the Lower Kittanning seam from western Pennsylvania. Relationships were sought between the paleoenvironmental setting of the coal swamp and the vertical and lateral variability of lithotypes, maceral composition and vitrinite types. Megascopically, the four samples collected from the freshwater facies of the seam are similar in appearance and relative lithotype composition, and display no distinct vertical zo… more
