Review of the Palisades pressure vessel accumulated fluence estimate and of the least squares methodology employed

Description: This report provides a review of the Palisades submittal to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requesting endorsement of their accumulated neutron fluence estimates based on a least squares adjustment methodology. This review highlights some minor issues in the applied methodology and provides some recommendations for future work. The overall conclusion is that the Palisades fluence estimation methodology provides a reasonable approach to a {open_quotes}best estimate{close_quotes} of the accumul… more

Decontamination of control rod housing from Palisades Nuclear Power Station.

Description: Argonne National Laboratory has developed a novel decontamination solvent for removing oxide scales formed on ferrous metals typical of nuclear reactor piping. The decontamination process is based on the properties of the diphosphonic acids (specifically 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid or HEDPA) coupled with strong reducing-agents (e.g., sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, SFS, and hydroxylamine nitrate, HAN). To study this solvent further, ANL has solicited actual stainless steel piping mat… more

On-site noise diagnostics at Palisades Nuclear Power Station

Description: From an applications symposium on power plant dynamics, control and testing; Knoxville, Tennessee, USA (8 Oct 1973). A real-time noise analyzer was used on-site at the Palisades nuclear plant to diagnose the cause of neutron flux oscillations. The analysis was compared with an earlier off-site analysis of tape recorded signals. The measurements and conclusions are described, and recommendations for application of on-site noise analysis in nuclear plants are presented. (HDR)

Temperature and velocity measurements and predictive model comparisons in the near-field region of surface thermal discharges

Description: Simultaneous temperature and velocity measurements were made in the near- field region of the surface thermal discharge at the Point Beach Unit 1 and Palisades Nuclear Power Plants on Lake Michigan. Data collected include measurements of temperature and velocity at the 0.5-, 1.0-, 1.5-, 2.0-, 2.5-, and 3.0-m depths, along with measurements of ambient lake and metenrological conditions. Bottom depth was also measured at variouss locations. four such surveys were made at the Point Beach plant, th… more

Review of operating history at the Palisades Nuclear Plant

Description: the Systematic Evaluation Program Branch (SEPB) of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is conducting the Systematic Evaluation Program whose purpose is to determine the safety margins of the design and operation of the eleven oldest operating commercial nuclear power plants in the United States. A portion of the SEP includes the compilation and interpretation of operational occurrences at these plants. This summary describes the methodology and results of the operational experience review o… more

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding the Palisades Plant, South Haven, Michigan, July 29, 1970

Description: The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the area surrounding the Palisades Plant during July 1970. A high-sensitivity detection system collected gamma spectral and gross-count data. The data were then condputer processed into a map of a 300 sq. mile area showing isoexposure contours 3 ft. above the ground. Exposure rates and isotopes identified are consistent with normal terrestrial background radiation. (auth)

Structural review of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 containment structure under combined loads for the Systematic Evaluation Program

Description: A structural reassessment of the containment structure of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 was performed for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as part of the Systematic Evaluation Program. Conclusions about the ability of the containment structure to withstand the Abnormal/Extreme Environment are presented. The reassessment focused mainly on the overall structural integrity of the containment building for the Abnormal/Extreme Environment. In this case, the Abnormal Environmental conditi… more
