Computer Control System for ORIC

Description: A computer control system is being implemented for the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC). At the start of a run, operating parameters are set automatically using data stored in a disc library. Adjustments of these parameters are made through an operator-computer interface consisting of a CRT unit with a keyboard. An array of assignable push-button switches is available for fine tuning various machine parameters. ORIC has 43 ungrounded power supplies requiring adjustment resolution to withi… more

Design and develop speed/pressure regulator

Description: The Physics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has several recirculating water cooling systems. One of them supplies deionized water at 150 psi, which is mainly used for cooling magnet windings at the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC). The system has three 125-hp water pumps, each of which is capable of supplying water at the rate of 1000 gpm. One of the major requirements of this water supply system is that the supply pressure must be kept constant. An adjustable-frequency speed co… more

Oric Central Region Calculations

Description: The central region for the K = 100 Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron, ORIC, will be modified to provide better orbit centering, focusing of orbits in the axial direction, and phase selection, in order to improve extraction efficiency, and reduce radioactive activation of cyclotron components. The central region is specifically designed for the acceleration of intense light ion beams such as 60 MeV protons and 15--100 MeV alphas. These beams will be used in the production of radioactive atoms in t… more

Shielding assessment for the proposed HRIBF upgrade to the National ISOL Facility

Description: An upgrade of the existing ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) to the National Radioactive Ion Beam Isotope Separator On Line (RIB ISOL) Facility is being proposed. Part of the upgrade involves increasing the source proton energy and current, resulting in more intense, higher energy radiation. Shielding requirements for the proposed upgrade to the HRIBF have been assessed with respect to weight, space, and dose-rate constraints. Shielding assessments were made for operating, sh… more

Development of the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility

Description: The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) construction project has been completed and the first radioactive ion beam has been successfully accelerated. The project, which began in 1992, has involved numerous facility modifications. The Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron has been converted from an energy booster for heavy ion beams to a light ion accelerator with internal ion source. A target-ion source and mass analysis system have been commissioned as key components of the facility`s ra… more

Status Report on the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Project

Description: In July 1992, a project was started to reconfigure the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility (HHIRF) to form the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). This ORNL project to produce medium-intensity, proton-rich, radioactive ion beams (RIBS) for astrophysics, nuclear physics, and applied research was first described to the SNEAP community at Chalk River in 1992. To briefly review, radioactive ions will be produced by light ion beams from the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) strik… more

Preliminary shielding estimates for the proposed Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (RIBF)

Description: The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has proposed designing and implementing a new target-ion source for production and injection of negative radioactive ion beams into the Hollifield tandem accelerator. This new facility, referred to as the Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (RIBF), will primarily be used to advance the scientific communities` capabilities for performing state-of-the-art cross-section measurements. Beams of protons or other light, stable ions from the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cycl… more

Progress, Status, and Plans for the HRIBF Project

Description: Over the last three years, the Holifield accelerator system has been reconfigured into a first-generation radioactive ion beam facility, the HRIBF, a national user facility for RIB research. The construction and reconfiguration have been completed and the equipment commissioning and beam development phases have started. The progress to date, the present status, and future plans will be given. The special problems connected with the production and acceleration of RIBs will be discussed.

Implementation of the ORIC magnetic field measurements

Description: The experimental details and methods employed in an extensive remapping of the magnetic field of the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) were reported previously. The medium- to high-field data (from 12 to 20 kgauss) have been Fourier analyzed and each of the coefficients parameterized in terms of the currents in the main coil, trim, harmonic and valley coils and the average field at each of the radii at which measurements were made. By inclusion of the average field in the formulation, the … more

ORIC stripping foil positioner for tandem beam injection

Description: The Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) is used as an energy booster for heavy ions from a 25 MV tandem accelerator. This operation requires precise placement of a stripping foil in the cyclotron for capture of the injected ions into an acceleration orbit. The mechanical design and control of the foil positioning device are described.

Development of the HRIBF 25-MV tandem accelerator as a RIB accelerator

Description: The Holifield Facility 25URC tandem accelerator will begin accelerating radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for nuclear structure and astrophysics research in 1996. This paper addresses the development of the accelerator to allow optimum operation with the particular challenges associated with RIBs. New diagnostics for ultra-low-intensity beams are being installed and the terminal potential stabilization system is being studied to optimize control with these low beam intensities. A new resistor-based … more

Operator interface to the ORIC control system

Description: The Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) was built in the early 1960s with a hard-wired manual control system. Presently, it serves as a variable-energy heavy-ion cyclotron with an internal ion source, or as an energy booster for the new 25 MV tandem electrostatic accelerator of the Holifield Heavy Ion Facility. One factor which has kept the cyclotron the productive research tool it is today is the gradual transfer of its control functions to a computer-based system beginning in the 1970s. Th… more

Variable field magnetic extraction channel for ORIC

Description: An improved magnetic beam extraction channel for the Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) has been designed to significantly reduce the external field disturbance and provide uniform in-channel field. This will make beam extraction near nu/sub r/ = 1 more predictable. The new channel consists of an iron tube of constant cross section with independently adjustable windings, both inside and outside the iron. The windings have a cos theta current density distribution. The iron tube is 1 meter lo… more
