A New Method for Measuring the Nuclear Hexadecapole Interaction in Some Solids

Description: A new method for measuring the nuclear hexadecapole interaction (HDI) in solids based on NMR quadrupole echoes is described. Theoretical values of the shifts of the quadrupole echo times caused by the HDI are given for two pulse and three pulse echoes in a nuclear spin 5/2 system. The method is applied to 1271 in an almost strain free crystal of KI and a hexadecapole coupling frequency (e2M16m16/h) of 630 Hz was found. Here e is the electronic charge, em16 is the fourth gradient of the external… more

Studies of fluctuation processes in nuclear collisions. Progress report, March 1, 1993--April 30, 1994

Description: This report summarizes the progress on grant No.FG05-89ER40530 during the period March 1, 1993 to April 30, 1994. By extending our previous work on the fluid dynamical treatment of the nuclear collective motion, we deduced from the Boltzmann-Langevin (BL) model a set of transport equations for N collective variables and calculated the associated transport coefficients. Work has also continued on investigating the relation between the BUU model and the BL model for the average evolution. The pri… more

Simple Critical Mass Calculations

Description: Abstract: "This report gives (1) a simple empirical equation which should yield critical mass values of homogeneous, partially moderated, unreflected spherical assemblies with an accuracy of a factor two, and (2) critical mass estimates obtained from from (1) for Oy-C-H and Oy-W-CH2 systems."

THE BERKELEY HIGH-ENERGY PHYSICS STUDY AT THE ERNEST O. LAWRENCE RADIATION LABORATORY, BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, JUNE 15 THROUGH AUGUST 15, 1961

Description: Seminar talks and special reports presented by the Berkeley summer study group are compiled. Included in the compilation are 24 seminar talks, 10 reports, a summary of theoretical conclusions, and comments on experimental questions. Separate abstracts have been prepared for 18 seminar talks and all of the reports. Five seminar talks have been abstracted previously in NSA. (M.P.G.)

The Investigation of Fundamental Interactions with Cold Neutrons

Description: Abstract: The National Bureau of Standards is establishing a National Cold Neutron Facility at its 20 MW reactor located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In order to provide guidance in the development of research plans for the Facility, the Department of Energy and NBS sponsored, on November 14-15, 1985, a workshop on the Investigation of Fundamental Interactions with Cold Neutrons. The 25 papers presented at the workshop are printed in the proceedings.

Development of Auxiliary Cyclotron Equipment for Using Tritium as Bombarding Particles in a Cyclotron

Description: "A circulating system for radioactive tritium was constructed, assembled, and tested. The results showed that the pumping speed of the system was too low for use. Therefore, bombardments in the cyclotron with tritium particles would not be made during the course of this project" (p. 1).

Three Lectures On Controlled Thermonuclear Power Production

Description: This report was written from the notes used by Dr. York in delivering his three lectures on considerations pertinent to the problem of utilizing controlled thermonuclear reactions for the production of power. The first lecture discussed fundamental properties of the DD and DT reactions and the reacting substances. The second lecture described the stellarator, a proposed machine for the controlled production of power from the above reactions. The third lecture described the pinch effect and cons… more

ENDF-201: ENDF/B-VI summary documentation

Description: Responsibility for oversight of the ENDF/B Evaluated Nuclear Data file lies with the Cross Section Evaluation Working Group (CSEWG), which is comprised of representatives from various governmental and industrial laboratories in the United States. Individual evaluations are provided by scientists at several US laboratories, including significant contributions by scientists from all over the world. In addition, ENDF/B-VI includes for the first time complete evaluations for three materials that we… more
