The Investigation of Fundamental Interactions with Cold Neutrons

Description: Abstract: The National Bureau of Standards is establishing a National Cold Neutron Facility at its 20 MW reactor located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In order to provide guidance in the development of research plans for the Facility, the Department of Energy and NBS sponsored, on November 14-15, 1985, a workshop on the Investigation of Fundamental Interactions with Cold Neutrons. The 25 papers presented at the workshop are printed in the proceedings.

Development of Auxiliary Cyclotron Equipment for Using Tritium as Bombarding Particles in a Cyclotron

Description: "A circulating system for radioactive tritium was constructed, assembled, and tested. The results showed that the pumping speed of the system was too low for use. Nuclear Reactions on the Palladium Isotopes

Description: The problem of interest in this investigation was to determine the cross sections of five nuclear reactions which occur when irradiating natural palladium with neutrons which have energy values of 15.1, 15.9, and 16.3 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to a copper monitor which was "sandwitched" in with the palladium target.

Studies of fluctuation processes in nuclear collisions. Progress report, March 1, 1993--April 30, 1994

Description: This report summarizes the progress on grant No.FG05-89ER40530 during the period March 1, 1993 to April 30, 1994. By extending our previous work on the fluid dynamical treatment of the nuclear collective motion, we deduced from the Boltzmann-Langevin (BL) model a set of transport equations for N collective variables and calculated the associated transport coefficients. Work has also continued on investigating the relation between the BUU model and the BL model for the average evolution. The principle investigator spent a fruitful summer (1993) at LBL, where in collaboration with J. Raindrop, we developed a numerical method for simulating the stochastic evolution of the phase-space density near local equilibrium. Two papers have appeared in Phys. Rev. C and Nucl. Phys. A, two papers have been accepted for publication, both in Nucl. Phys. A, and two manuscripts have been submitted to Z. Phys. A for publication. Several seminars/contributed talks were given at various meetings and an invited talk was presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institution Hot and Dense Matter, Bodrum/Turkey.

HIGH ENERGY EXCITATION FUNCTIONS IN THE HEAVY REGION

Description: The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions for the following reactions: Th{sup 232}(p,6n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}(p,3n)Pa{sup 230}, Th{sup 232}(d,7n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},p8n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},p5n)Pa{sup 230}, and U{sup 238}(p,{alpha}8n)Pa{sup 227}. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. Some rough excitation function data have also been determined for the reactions Th{sup 232}(d,4n)Pa{sup 230}, U{sup 238}(p,{alpha}5n)Pa{sup 230}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},7n)U{sup 229}, and Th{sup 232}({alpha},6n)U{sup 230}. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

Nuclear Reactions of Arsenic with 190 Mev Deuterons

Description: Isotopes formed in the bombardment of {sub 33}As{sup 75} with 190 Mev deuterons range in atomic number up to 24 (or more) mass units lighter than As{sup 75}. Identification of these isotopes was based on chemical behavior and half-life determination. Relative yields have been calculated and show that 80% of the observed reactions produce isotopes within 8 mass units of As{sup 75}. Three new isotopes have been observed: 9.5 d. Se{sup 72} (K), 44 m, Se{sup 71} ({beta}{sup +}), and 52 m, As{sup 71} ({beta}{sup +}).
