Strippable lignite Deposits, Slope and Bowman Counties, North Dakota

Description: From abstract: Slope and Bowman Counties, N. Dak., include an area of about 2,450 square miles in the southeastern part of the Fort Union coal region of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. In anticipation of a future increase in the demand for the low-rank coal of this region as a fuel for electric power plants and as a raw material for various chemical synthesizing processes, Slope and Bowman Counties were investigated for deposits of lignite that could be mined by large scale strip mining methods. All the lignite beds of economic importance in this area are in the Fort Union formation, particularly in the Tongue River member. The beds are nearly horizontal, dipping about 25 to 50 feet per mile north and northeast from the Cedar Creek anticline in the southwest corner of the area.

Reconnaissance for Trace Elements in North Dakota and Eastern Montana

Description: From abstract: A reconnaissance for sources of radioactive material in North Dakota and eastern Montana was made in 1948. This reconnaissance was followed by a more detailed survey of parts of Golden Valley and Slope counties, southwestern North Dakota, in June 1949. The radioactivity of representative sections of all formations known to be exposed in the area and of three manganiferous spring deposits was determined with portable Geiger-Mueller counters. At 86 localities 82 samples were taken of these formations and also of 10 ground and surface waters.

Results of Core Drilling of Uranium-Bearing Lignite Deposits in Harding and Perkins Counties, South Dakota, and Bowman County, North Dakota

Description: Purpose: The main objective of the Dakota core drilling program was to determine reserves of uraniferous lignite based on chemical uranium and spectrographic determinations from unweathered samples, particularly from those areas where surface sampling of the beds during the previous field season indicated that significant deposits of uranium-bearing lignite might be present. A secondary objective was to obtain fresh samples and to measure the radioactivity of the overlying Oligocene White River and Miocene Arikaree formations from which the uranium in lignite is believed to have been derived.

The Moraines of the Missouri Coteau, and their Attendant Deposits

Description: Introduction: It seems important that several general facts should be stated for the full understanding of terms used and allusions made in this report. The field considered is the region lying between the Missouri and James rivers, and between the latitudes of Jamestown, N. Dak., and Huron, S. Dak. 1. As has been stated in papers published by Chamberlin, Upham, myself, and others, several more or less distinct moraines have been observed in the Mississippi Valley. It has been found convenient to distinguish the outermost three by special names. President Chamberlin has named them, beginning with the outermost, Altamont, Gary, and Antelope moraines, from localities south of Big Stone Lake, and these names have been quite generally adopted. Upham and others have named them the First, Second, and Third, and as the outermost two are the more prominent, they have also been called the Outer and Inner moraines. Each of these, especially the First and Second, has subordinate divisions, which mark the borders of the different lobes into which the margin of the ice sheet was often divided. 2.) It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the generally recognized features of drift formations, such as the undulating topography and the series of drift deposits, covering an area with successive layers of till in a manner which might be compared to a nest of spoons of assorted sizes, the smaller lying inside the larger. Of these spoonshaped deposits, the moraines form the outer rims. 3.) As the moraines are the most conspicuous features of the drift formations, we may take them as the basis for dividing the subject. State heating oil and propane program: Final technical report, 1991-92 heating season, Minnesota Department of Public Service

Description: This report summarizes the survey approach and results of the Department of Public Service`s survey of retail fuel oil and propane prices during the 1991-92 heating season. The semi-monthly phone surveys were conducted in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Energy`s State Fuel Oil and Propane Program, which coordinated surveys of heating fuel, prices by 25 eastern and midwest states. This federal/state program serves as a method for fast collection, analysis, and dissemination of information on current residential prices. No other information source meets needs for timely retail, price information over the course of the heating season.

North Dakota SHOPP final performance report

Description: During the last four heating seasons, implementing SHOPP within the state of North Dakota, telephone surveys were conducted covering samples of between 26 and 30 residential propane dealers. In conducting the SHOPP survey in North Dakota, data collection was limited to residential propane prices. The survey commenced the first Monday in October and ended in March. The surveys were normally conducted on the first and third Monday of each month. However, in the 1991/93 and 1993/94 heating seasons, the collection of data was increased briefly to weekly survey at the direction of EIA. In conducting the survey, the data was inputted into the PEDRO computerized data system for processing and transmittal to EIA. Detailed printouts of the price data from the 1995/96 SHOPP propane survey are contained in the attached tables. The survey data, as analyzed by EIA, resulted in estimated average residential propane prices for the state of North Dakota during the heating season. Attached are line charts which plot this average price for propane within the state against the calculated average for PADD II, of which North Dakota is a part.

Description: Project kickoff meetings were held this period. One meeting was held at the University of North Dakota (UND) for team members, and a second meeting was held at National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) as part of a kickoff for the Cofiring Program under the Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Office. Description: A variety of lignin degrading fungi mediate solubilization and subsequent biodegradation of coal macromolecules (a.k.a. coal polymer) from highly oxidized low rank coals such as leonardites. It appears that oxalate or possibly other metal chelators (i.e., certain Krebs Cycle intermediates) mediate solubilization of low rank coals while extracellular oxidases have a role in subsequent oxidation of solubilized coal macromolecule. These processes are under nutritional control. For example, in the case of P. chrysosporium, solubilization of leonardite occurred when the fungi were cultured on most but not all nutrient agars tested and subsequent biodegradation occurred only in nutrient nitrogen limited cultures. Lignin peroxidases mediate oxidation of coal macromolecule in a reaction that is dependent on the presence of veratryl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Kinetic evidence suggests that veratryl alcohol is oxidized to the veratryl alcohol cation radical which then mediates oxidation of the coal macromolecule. Results by others suggest that Mn peroxidases mediate formation of reactive Mn{sup 3+} complexes which also mediate oxidation of coal macromolecule. A biomimetic approach was used to study solubilization of a North Dakota leonardite. It was found that a concentration {approximately}75 mM sodium oxalate was optimal for solubilization of this low rank coal. This is important because this is well above the concentration of oxalate produced by fungi in liquid culture. Higher local concentrations probably occur in solid agar cultures and thus may account for the observation that greater solubilization occurs in agar media relative to liquid media. The characteristics of biomimetically solubilized leonardite were similar to those of biologically solubilized leonardite. Perhaps our most interesting observation was that in addition to oxalate, other common Lewis bases (phosphate/hydrogen phosphate/dihydrogen phosphate and bicarbonate/carbonate ions) are able to mediate substantial solubilization of leonardite at physiological pH values. Support Services for Ceramic Fiber-Ceramic Matrix Composites

Description: To increase national energy self-sufficiency for the near future, power systems will be required to fire low-grade fuels more efficiently than is currently possible. The typical coal-fired steam cycle used at present is limited to a maximum steam temperature of 540 C and a conversion efficiency of 35%. Higher working-fluid temperatures are required to boost efficiency, exposing subsystems to very damaging conditions. Issues of special concern to materials developers are corrosion and warping of hot-gas particulate filters and corrosion and erosion of high-temperature heat exchangers. The University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) is working with the National Energy Technology Laboratory in conjunction with NCC Engineering, Inc., to provide technical assistance and coal by-products to the Fossil Energy Materials Advanced Research and Technology Development Materials Program investigating materials failure in fossil energy systems. The main activities of the EERC are to assemble coal slag and hot-gas filter ash samples for use by materials researchers, to assist in providing opportunities for realistic tests of advanced materials in pilot-scale fossil energy systems, and to provide analytical support in determining corrosion mechanisms of the exposed materials. In this final report for the project year of September 2000 through August 2001, the facilities at the EERC that can be used by researchers for realistic testing of materials are described. Researchers can include sample coupons in each of these facilities at no cost since they are being operated under separate funding. In addition, two pilot-scale coal combustion tests are described in which material sample coupons were included from researchers involved in the development of fossil energy materials.
