Comparison of three Ni-Hard I alloys

Description: This report documents the results of an investigation which was undertaken to reveal the similarities and differences in the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of three Ni-Hard I alloys. One alloy (B1) is ASTM A532 class IA Ni-Hard containing 4.2 wt. pct. Ni. The second alloy (B2) is similar to B1 but higher in Cr, Si, and Mo. The third alloy (T1) also falls in the same ASTM specification, but it contains 3.3 wt. pct. Ni. The alloys were evaluated in both as-cast and stre… more

Group 10 Catalyzed Olefin Hydroarylation

Description: Alkyl-arenes are important industry feedstock chemicals that are used as solvents, pharmaceutical precursors, and polymer monomer units. One alkyl-arene, ethylbenzene, is the main focus of this dissertation, and is produced in the million ton a year scale. As alkyl-arenes are important commodity chemicals, catalytic olefin hydroarylation is a lucrative alternative for their production rather than Friedel-Crafts alkylation or various coupling reactions that have lower atom economy, require stron… more

Monte Carlo Simulations of Segregation in Pt-Ni Catalyst Nanoparticles

Description: We have investigated the segregation of Pt atoms in the surfaces of Pt-Ni nanoparticles, using Modified Embedded Atom Model potentials and the Monte Carlo method. The nanoparticles are assumed to have disordered fcc configurations at two fixed overall concentrations (50 at. percent Pt and 75 at. percent Pt). We use four kinds of nanoparticle shapes [cube, tetrahedron, octahedron, and cubo-octahedron] terminated by {l_brace}111{r_brace} and {l_brace}100{r_brace} facets to examine the extent of t… more

Atomistic simulations of fcc Pt{sub 75}Ni{sub 25} and Pt{sub 75}Re{sub 25} cubo-octahedral nanoparticles

Description: We have developed interatomic potentials for Pt-Ni and Pt-Re alloys within the modified embedded atom method (MEAM). Furthermore, we applied these potentials to study the equilibrium structures of Pt75Ni25 and Pt75Re25 nanoparticles at T=600 K using the Monte Carlo method. In this work, the nanoparticles are assumed to have disordered fcc cubo-octahedral shapes (terminated by {l_brace}111{r_brace} and {l_brace}100{r_brace} facets) and contain from 586 to 4033 atoms (corresponding to a diameter … more

Liquid metal feeding through dendritic region in Ni-Hard white iron

Description: Liquid permeability in the dendritic regions is one of the factors that determine porosity formation and macro segregation in castings. Permeability in the dendritic structure of Ni-Hard white iron was measured as a function of temperature. Effect of microstructural coarsening on the permeability was also investigated. Permeability increased with coarsening dendritic structure in Ni-Hard white iron.

Stainless steels with improved strength for service at 760 C and above

Description: An evaluation was undertaken of modified 25Cr-20Ni stainless steels and a modified 20Cr-25Ni-Nb stainless steel for advanced energy applications at 760 C (1,400 F) and higher. It was found that good fabricability, strength, and ductility could be produced in the modified steels. Stress rupture data to beyond 10,000 h showed that the strengths of the modified steels were more than double that for type 310H stainless steel.

Alexander Johnson's Ni' Concerto (1994) - Concerto no. 1 for Piano and Orchestra: a Discussion of Influences from Africa, Eastern and Western Europe

Description: In the new generation of artists emerging in South Africa, Alexander Johnson is considered the most prolific young composer of his day. In a recent review in the Pretoria News, Johnson has been praised by eminent critic Paul Boekkooi as a composer who has “an ear for the exotic and knows exactly how to bring it off....” He continued by noting that his music is “mentally engrossing, pleasurable to the senses and seems refreshingly free from dogmatic formulas." Johnson writes for musicians and th… more
