Estimate of earth media shear strength at the Nevada Test Site

Description: A method is presented of estimating the effective shear strength of the fractured rock that surrounds a nuclear detonation. To do this, we measure the cavity radii from previous detonations. Nevada test site fallout atom ratios: /sup 240/Pu//sup 239/Pu and /sup 241/Pu//sup 239/Pu

Description: The exposure of the population in Utah to external gamma radiation from the fallout from nuclear weapons tests carried out between 1951 and 1958 at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been reconstructed from recent measurements of /sup 137/Cs and plutonium in soil. The fraction of /sup 137/Cs in the fallout from NTS events was calculated from the total plutonium and the /sup 240/Pu//sup 239/Pu ratios measured in the soil, using the values of 0.180 +- 0.006 and 0.032 +- 0.003 for that ratio in global… more

Permeability of stemming materials for prompt gas sampling

Description: The permeability and porosity of a suite of man-made granular aggregates and stemming materials currently in use at NTS was measured in 1-D loading as a function of stress. In all cases, the gas permeability was measured at 22 MPa after cycling up and down from 100 to 1200 MPa. Depending on stress and material, permeability decreased up to three orders of magnitude, porosity up to 63% and the sample compacted by as much as 35%. Technical support non-SLB(GCDF). [Shallow land burial]

Description: The Los Alamos National Laboratory is providing technical support for the Greater Confinement Demonstration Facility (GCDF) at the Nevada Test Site. Statistical analysis of radioactivity in the environment

Description: The pattern of radioactivity in surface soils of Area 5 of the Nevada Test Site is analyzed statistically by means of kriging. The 1962 event code-named Smallboy effected the greatest proportion of the area sampled, but some of the area was also affected by a number of other events. The data for this study were collected on a regular grid to take advantage of the efficiency of grid sampling. (ACR)

Seismic hazard analysis for the NTS spent reactor fuel test site

Description: An experiment is being directed at the Nevada Test Site to test the feasibility for storage of spent fuel from nuclear reactors in geologic media. As part of this project, an analysis of the earthquake hazard was prepared. This report presents the results of this seismic hazard assessment. Description: Eleven hours after execution of the Riola Event (at 0826 PDT on 25 September 1980) in hole U2eq of the Nevada Test Site (NTS), a release of radioactivity began. When the seepage stopped at about noon the following day, up to some 3200 Ci of activity had been dispersed by light variable winds. Portable, remotely operated, computer-controlled, quadrupole mass spectrometer for field use

Description: A portable, remote-controlled mass spectrometer was required at the Nevada Test Site to analyze prompt post-event gas from the nuclear cavity in support of the underground testing program.
