Measurement of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ in Semileptonic nu Fe and anti nu Fe Interactions

Description: We report results from neutral current scattering of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos on iron nuclei by the CCFRR experiment at Fermilab. Our objective is the measurement of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ from inclusive semileptonic neutrino-nucleon interactions. Such a measurement, even though it is subject to more corrections than the analogous measurement in neutrino-electron scattering (e.g. due to the presence of a strange quark sea in the nucleon), has a high degree of statistical accuracy and ma… more

Strange-Particle Production in High-Energy Anti. Nu. And. Nu. Charged-Current Interactions on Protons

Description: We have studied the semi-inclusive reactions anti ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/V/sup 0/X and ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/V/sup 0/X, and measured the fractional rate for producing one or more neutral strange particles in these reactions to be 0.16 +- 0.03 and 0.15 +- 0.04, respectively. We have observed K/sup -/(892) and ..sigma../sup -/(1385) production in anti ..nu..p scattering at a few percent of the inclusive rate. No evidence for D/sup 0/ production was seen in the K/sub s//sup 0/..pi../s… more

Hadronic structure of the weak neutral current. [Cross sections]

Description: A comparison of neutral and charged current deep inelastic neutrino interactions is made in an experiment utilizing the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber. The ratio of neutral current events (NC) to charged current events (CC) is 0.35 +- .06 when the visible hadronic energy is greater than 10 GeV. The distributions of NC and CC in a new variable called u/sub vis/, which depends only on the observed hadrons, are given. From these distributions and the assumption that the x distribution is the same f… more

Comparison of jet size in. nu. /sup -/p interactions with that in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. [Below 10 GeV]

Description: Using new ..nu../sup -/p charged-current data from the Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber, some properties of the ..nu../sup -/-induced hadronic jets are studied. The angular size of the jets is measured and compared with results from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. The jets in the two processes are found to be quite similar in terms of the variables sphericity, thrust, and energy flow. 15 references.

Heavy quark production by neutrinos and antineutrinos. [Quark-parton model, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group, 200 GeV]

Description: The rate for producing t- and b-quarks in, respectively, neutrino and antineutrino interactions with nucleons are estimated. Experimental quark parton distribution functions, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group mixing angles, and threshold suppression through rescaling are used in the calculation. The ratios to total cross sections of b-quark production by anti nu, R/sub b//sup anti nu/, and t-quark production by ..nu.., R/sub t//sup nu/, are, respectively, R/sub b//sup anti nu/ approximately equa… more

LAMPF neutrino experiment to test muon number conservation

Description: The need for a muon number conservation law separate from lepton number conservation is mandated by the absence of neutrinoless muon-electron transitions. The form of the muon number conservation law, however, is not determined by these considerations. A search was made for electron antineutrinos coming from positive muon decays, which would be allowed by a multiplicative formulation of muon number conservation, but not by an additive formulation. The LAMPF beam dump was used as a source of pos… more

Monte Carlo simulation of inelastic neutrino scattering in DUMAND. [2 TeV]

Description: Detailed Monte Carlo calculations simulating the detection in the DUMAND 1-km/sup 3/ optical detector of inelastic neutrino scattering by nucleons at 2 TeV and above show that the measurement of the y distribution is subject to systematic errors due to experimental errors and intrinsic fluctuations which produce errors in the energy determinations of hadronic cascade and muon; uncertainty in the exact amount of antineutrino fraction in the cosmic-ray neutrino flux. The nature of these errors is… more

Multiplicity Distributions in νμp Interactions

Description: Multiplicity distributions of the hadrons produced in antineutrino proton interactions are presented. The data sample, which consists of 2025 charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 5 GeV, comes from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the broad-band antineutrino beam at Fermilab. The distribution in hadronic mass W has an average value of 3.7 GeV but extends up to 10 GeV. The mean multiplicity of charged hadrons depends on the hadronic mass W and varies as … more

Measurement of the nu/sub. mu. / charged-current cross section

Description: The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber, filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mix, was exposed to a narrow band nu/sub ..mu../ beam. Based on the observation of 830 charged current nu/sub ..mu../ interactions, the cross section was found to rise linearly with the neutrino energy in the interval, 10 GeV less than or equal to E/sub nu/ less than or equal to 240 GeV, with a constant slope of: sigma/sub nu/E/sub nu/ = (0.64 +- 0.05) 10/sup -38/ cm/sup 2/ GeV/sup -1/. This result is discussed in relation to … more

Evidence for a neutrino-induced dilepton event in the A. N. L. 12-foot bubble chamber. [Approximately 2000 MeV/c/sup 2/]

Description: The event ..nu..p(n/sub s/) ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/e/sup +/ ..nu../sub e/(n /sub s/), found in a bubble chamber, is considered. It is concluded that this event is clearly unusual when explained in terms of normal neutrino interactions. But if it is an example of dilepton production, it occurs at the expected rate of single lepton production. If it is due to the weak decay of a new baryon, the baryon mass appears to be near 2 GeV/c/sup 2/ and is unlikely to … more

Weinberg--Salam gauge model and neutrino proton elastic scattering. [Differential cross sections]

Description: Elastic scattering of neutrino on proton is studied in the Weinberg-Salam gauge model of neutral currents. Particular attention is paid to the experimental cuts relevant to two recent BNL experiments and spectra averaging so that model predictions can be directly compared to the experimental data. The uncertainty in the calculation due to changes in the parameters which are not well determined such as the mass of the axial vector meson is emphasized. It is concluded that the simple Weinberg-Sal… more

Measurements of neutrino and antineutrino cross sections at high energies

Description: The dependence of the neutrino total cross section sigma /sub nu / on neutrino energy was measured up to 160 GeV. The data are consistent with a linear dependence with slope (0.58 plus or minus 0.25) x 10/sup -38/ cm/suup 2/ GeV. The ratio of the antineutrino to the neutrino total cross section sigma / sub nu / sigma /su b nu / was found to be approximately constant up to 70 GeV at a value which is consistent with the numerical value of 1/3 expected for the scattering of neutrinos and antineutr… more

Tests of the Hardware and Software for the Reconstruction of Trajectories in the Experiment MINERvA

Description: MINERvA experiment has a highly segmented and high precision neutrino detector able to record events with high statistic (over 13 millions in a four year run). MINERvA uses FERMILAB NuMI beamline. The detector will allow a detailed study of neutrino-nucleon interactions. Moreover, the detector has a target with different materials allowing, for the first time, the study of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. We present here the work done with the MINERvA reconstruction group that has resu… more

Weak boson effects in charged current neutrino and antineutrino interactions at very high (DUMAND) energies. [1 to 100 TeV, quark-parton model, Weinberg-Salam gauge model]

Description: The charged current neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections and y-distributions at very high energies (1 to 100 TeV) using the standard quark-parton model have been calculated. A range of W boson masses was considered which includes the value in the Weinberg-Salam model. The parametrization of the quark structure functions was chosen to fit the highest energy data available (100 to 200 GeV) so that scaling violations could be neglected. The W boson propagator causes the total cross secti… more

A measurement of {alpha}{sub s}(Q{sup 2}) from the Gross Llewellyn Smith sum rule

Description: The Gross Llewellyn Smith sum rule has been measured at different values of four-momentum transfer squared (Q{sup 2}) by combining the precise CCFR neutrino data with data from other deep-inelastic scattering experiments at lower values of Q{sup 2}. A comparison with the {Omicron} ({alpha}{sub s}{sup 3}) predictions of perturbative QCD yields a determination of {alpha}{sub s} and its dependence on Q{sup 2} in the range 1GeV{sup 2} < Q{sup 2} < 20 GeV{sup 2}. Low Q{sup 2} tests have greater sens… more

Neutrino radiation hazards: A paper tiger

Description: Neutrinos are present in the natural environment due to terrestrial, solar, and cosmic sources and are also produced at accelerators both incidentally and intentionally as part of physics research programs. Progress in fundamental physics research has led to the creation of beams of neutrinos of ever-increasing intensity and/or energy. The large size and cost associated with these beams attracts, and indeed requires, public interest, support, and some understanding of the `exotic` particles pro… more

Higgs boson production by very high energy neutrinos. [1 to 1000 TeV, cross sections]

Description: Higgs bosons may be produced by bremsstrahlung off a virtual W/sup +-/ or a Z/sup 0/ exchanged in a charged or neutral current neutrino interaction. The production cross sections are calculated, and it is pointed out that they cannot grow quadratically with E/sub nu/ as had been suggested earlier, and it is argued that at best they can increase like the square of ln s/M/sup 2//sub W,Z/ at very high energies. Using a simple approximation for the propagator effect, numerical results in the high e… more
