Aerothermodynamic analysis of the SNAP-27 fuel cask

Description: An aerothermodynamic analysis of the SNAP-27 LEM fuel cask is presented for each of three mission aborts. Aerodynamic models for point mass and six degree-of-freedom trajectories are used, and the fuel cask heating rates and temperature responses are predicted for these trajectories. A survey of analytical and experimental studies of separated flow is related to the fuel cask, and a shock tunnel test program is outlined for further fuel cask analyses.

Thermal analysis of a SNAP-8 type reactor system during atmospheric reentry. Thermo-physics technical note No. 76

Description: A thermal analysis was carried out to determine the temperature distribution in a SNAP-8 type reactor system during atmopsheric reentry. Of particular interest are the temperature distributions in the reactor upper head, the upper grid plate, and the vessel wall. The time and altitude were determined at which the upper head falls away from the reactor core due to having a portion of its wall melted through. The time and altitude of the melting of the upper grid plate and vessel wall were also d… more

Thermo-Physics Technical Note No. 60: thermal analysis of SNAP 10A reactor core during atmospheric reentry and resulting core disintegration and fuel element separation

Description: A thermal analysis is carried out to determine the temperature distribution throughout a SNAP 10A reactor core, particularly in the vicinity of the grid plates, during atmospheric reentry. The transient temperatue distribution of the grid plate indicates when sufficient melting occurs so that fuel elements are free to be released and continue their descent individually.

RTOD-photo operations and procedures manual

Description: This document presents a survey of the EG&G NRDS photographic operation in four major sections and includes the work scope, procedures, some technical backgrounding and operational information. Two sections, Instrumentation and Photo Systems, include the areas of direct responsibilities while a section on Film Handling and Coordination and a section covering special information, pertinent to the project, are included to adequately complete this survey. The photographic group is housed in two tr… more

SNAP 10A FS-3 reactor performance

Description: SNAP 10FS-3 was the first flight-qualified SNAP reactor system to be operated in a simulated space environment. Prestart-up qualification testing, automatic start-up, endurance period performance, extended operation test and reactor shutdown are described as they affected, or were affected by, overall reactor performance. Performance of the reactor control system and the diagnostic instrumentation is critically evaluted.

NRX/EST Test Prediction Report (U)

Description: The objectives of this test are to demonstrate the ability of a NERVA-type engine system to bootstrap from a tank pressure of 45 PSIA to full power, to study the stability of the control systems, to obtain high power mapping data and to demonstrate the stability of the core at high power. System response measurements will be conducted at both low and high power points to study the control systems. The operation of the engine at 4000{sup o}R chamber temperature will be mapped from design pressur… more
