Enhancing the use of coals by gas reburning-sorbent injection

Description: The objective of this project is to evaluate and demonstrate a cost effective emission control technology for acid rain precursors, oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) and sulfur (SO{sub x}), on three coal fired utility boilers in Illinois. The units selected are representative of pre-NSPS design practices; tangential, wall, and cyclone fired. The specific objectives are to demonstrate reductions of 60 percent in NO{sub x} and 50 percent in SO{sub x} emissions, by a combination of two developed tech… more

Impacts of the national energy programme on solar economics

Description: The National Energy Plan (NEP) sets as a goal the use of solar energy in two and a half million homes in 1985. A key provision of the NEP (as well as congressional alternatives) provides for the subsidization of solar equipment. The extent to which these subsidies (income tax credits) might offset the impact of continued energy-price control is examined. Regional prices and availability of conventional energy sources (oil, gas, and electricity) were compiled to obtain a current and consistent s… more

Effect of liquid waste discharges from steam generating facilities

Description: This report contains a summary of the effects of liquid waste discharges from steam electric generating facilities on the environment. Also included is a simplified model for use in approximately determining the effects of these discharges. Four basic fuels are used in steam electric power plants: three fossil fuels--coal, natural gas, and oil; and uranium--presently the basic fuel of nuclear power. Coal and uranium are expected to be the major fuels in future years. The following power plant e… more

Analysis of natural gas supply strategies at Fort Drum

Description: This analysis investigates strategies for Fort Drum to acquire a reliable natural gas supply while reducing its gas supply costs. The purpose of this study is to recommend an optimal supply mix based on the life-cycle costs of each strategy analyzed. In particular, this study is intended to provide initial guidance as to whether or not the building and operating of a propane-air mixing station is a feasible alternative to the current gas acquisition strategy. The analysis proceeded by defining … more

Demonstration projects for coalbed methane and Devonian shale gas: Final report. [None]

Description: In 1979, the US Department of Energy provided the American Public Gas Association (APGA) with a grant to demonstrate the feasibility of bringing unconventional gas such as methane produced from coalbeds or Devonian Shale directly into publicly owned utility system distribution lines. In conjunction with this grant, a seven-year program was initiated where a total of sixteen wells were drilled for the purpose of providing this untapped resource to communities who distribute natural gas. While co… more

RESFEN: A residential fenestration performance design tool

Description: This paper describes the development of a prototype PC-based computer program called RESFEN. The program calculates the heating and cooling energy performance and costs of residential fenestration systems. Regression analysis of a data base of DOE-2 building energy simulations of single- and two-story residential buildings was used to develop algrbraic expressions that form the basis of the calculation procedure. The user can vary geographic location, electricity and gas cost, infiltration and … more

Massive hydraulic fracturing well, Federal No. 498-4-1, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. Final report

Description: This project is an MHF of a previously untreated Mesaverde interval in a well in northwest Colorado. The rocks involved may have been deposited during a marine invasion of long-continued, swamp environments. If so, they would have possessed superior primary reservoir properties. The logging program, identical to those used in the nearby Rio Blanco Nuclear and MHF Project wells, supplied contradictory information. The frac could furnish better understanding of the log suite, better parameters fo… more

Capital requirements for the transportation of energy materials: 1979 ARC estimates. Draft final report

Description: This report contains TERA's estimates of capital requirements to transport natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products, and coal in the United States by 1990. The low, medium, and high world-oil-price scenarios from the EIA's Mid-range Energy Forecasting System (MEFS), as used in the 1979 Annual Report to Congress (ARC), were provided as a basis for the analysis and represent three alternative futures. TERA's approach varies by energy commodity to make best use of the information and analytical … more

Effects of atmospheric variability on energy utilization and conservation. Final report, 1 November 1976--31 October 1977

Description: A space-heating energy-consumption model for Greeley, Colorado for the winter of 1976-77 was within 98.9 percent of actual natural gas consumption for that city. Modeling of Cheyenne, Wyoming, including the testing of a new statistical scheme to develop the building census required by the energy consumption model, has progressed to the point where reliable natural gas consumption estimates can be made with the model for that community. A detailed study of temperature and surface wind patterns i… more

Yttria-stabilized zirconia solid oxide electrolyte fuel cells, monolithic solid oxide fuel cells

Description: Small cell size, thin ceramic components, and high operating temperature are the key features of the MSOFC. The small size of individual cells in the monolithic structure increases the active surface area. For example, an MSOFC with channels about 1 mm in diameter has a ratio of active surface area to volume of about 9.4 sq cm/cu cm. This is about seven times the ratio for conventional fuel cells. On this basis alone, an MSOFC with a channel diameter of 1 mm should produce the same power as a c… more
