Pipeline bottoming cycle study. Final report

Description: The technical and economic feasibility of applying bottoming cycles to the prime movers that drive the compressors of natural gas pipelines was studied. These bottoming cycles convert some of the waste heat from the exhaust gas of the prime movers into shaft power and conserve gas. Three typical compressor station sites were selected, each on a different pipeline. Although the prime movers were different, they were similar enough in exhaust gas flow rate and temperature that a single bottoming … more

Use of GRASS for Routing Gas Pipeline Rights-of-Way

Description: This study, sponsored by the Gas Research Institute (GRI), was conducted to illustrate how a GIS (Geographic Information System) can be used to assess alternative routes for new gas pipeline rights-of-way (ROWs). The results show that a least-cost analysis using GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis and Support System) is a good method for siting new gas pipeline ROWs on the basis of environmental and engineering constraints to pipeline construction and maintenance. The cost and time needed to u… more

National conference on integrated resource planning: Proceedings

Description: Until recently, state regulators have focused most of their attention on the development of least-cost or integrated resource planning (IRP) processes for electric utilities. A number of commissions are beginning to scrutinize the planning processes of local gas distribution companies (LDCs) because of the increased control that LDCs have over their purchased gas costs (as well as the associated risks) and because of questions surrounding the role and potential of gas end-use efficiency options… more

Physical aspects of the US oil and gas systems

Description: The purpose of this report is to describe the physical operations which take place within the petroleum and natural gas industries of the US. This information was the basis for the overall network design and the detailed data requirements for the Emergency Management Information System (EEMIS) of the US Department of Energy (DOE). Since EEMIS represents the entire oil and gas systems this report can be used to obtain a basic understanding of the entire energy system, from production to consumpt… more

Development of polymer concrete vaults for natural gas regulator stations

Description: Vaults for natural gas regulator stations have traditionally been fabricated with steel-reinforced portland cement concrete. Since these vaults are installed below ground level, they are usually coated with a water-proofing material to prevent the ingress of moisture into the vault. In some cases, penetrations for piping that are normally cast into the vault do not line up with the gas lines in the streets. This necessitates off-setting the lines to line up with the penetrations in the vault or… more

Enhancing the use of coals by gas reburning-sorbent injection

Description: The objective of this project is to evaluate and demonstrate a cost effective emission control technology for acid rain precursors, oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) and sulfur (SO{sub x}), on two coal fired utility boilers in Illinois. The units selected are representative of pre-NSPS design practices: tangential and cyclone fired. Work on a third unit, wall fired, has been stopped because of funding limitations. The specific objectives are to demonstrate reductions of 60 percent in NO{sub x} and… more

Energy study of pipeline transportation systems. Executive summary. Final report

Description: The basic objectives of the study were to: characterize the pipeline industry and understand its energy consumption, i.e., the patterns of consumption and the quantities and intensities of that consumption in each of the five major pipeline industry segments: gas, oil, slurry, fresh water, and waste water; characterize and understand the influence of the Federal Government on the introduction of energy-conservative innovations into the pipeline industry; identify opportunities for energy conser… more

The use of inert gas as cushion gas in underground storage: Practical and economic issues

Description: The 395 underground natural gas storage fields in the United States are operated by both transmission and distribution companies as an integral part of the gas industry's delivery system. Base (cushion) gas is required to maintain storage reservoir volume and pressure to ensure adequate deliverability. Base gas is a major investment cost for new storage field development. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, that is less expensive than natural gas can be used to fill all or part of the base gas requ… more

A procedure for developing codes and standards for the natural gas industry in Asian-Pacific Rim nations

Description: An important consideration for developing nations planning to provide or expand their natural gas infrastructure is adapting a procedure for developing codes and standards for design, installation, operation, and maintenance of the facilities required to deliver natural gas from the wellhead to the customers. Codes and standards for performance and material specifications adapted to the climatic, geographic, and demographic conditions of the country will provide the natural gas industry with th… more

Data accumulation on the methane potential of the coal beds of Colorado. Final report

Description: A two-year project was conducted to gather data that would assist in the evaluation of the methane potential of the coal beds of Colorado. It was found that a number of closed underground coal mines in the State had reported gassy conditions or had experienced fires and explosions of varied intensity and frequency. The majority of such occurrences have been in those areas characterized by coals of relatively low (i.e., below 31%) volatile matter (VM) content. The south half of the Raton Mesa co… more

A program to develop the domestic natural gas industry in Indonesia: Case history of two World Bank projects

Description: Indonesia depends heavily on revenues from the export of LNG and oil, the availability of which appears to be decreasing. It is therefore making a strong effort to accelerate development of a domestic natural gas industry. A high priority has been given to the conversion of power plants and city gas systems, including local industries and commercial facilities, from liquid fuels to natural gas. This will release more oil for export, help to meet the objectives of Repelita V, and provide substan… more
