Rapid multiplicity rise as function of momentum transfer in multicomponent models

Description: It is shown that the average multiplicity exhibits a rapid rise as a function of t (the momentum transfer between the initial and leading particle) in multicomponent models in marked contrast to multiperipheral models where a slow decrease is predicted. (auth)

Study of nuclear fragment emission in proton heavy nucleus collision from 10 to 500 GeV/c

Description: We propose to measure the double differential cross section of nuclear fragments (2 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 16), for a given incident momentum, produced by proton heavy nucleus (20 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 80) collisions in the 10 to 500 GeV/c momentum range. Recent experimental results and theoretical speculations suggest collective nuclear motion is initiated by the passage of a fast proton through a heavy nucleus. The novel feature of this experiment is the determination of the energy dependence of the excitation mechanism. Because nuclear fragments are best studied from thin targets, one needs a very high beam flux to obtain sufficient event rates. These considerations make the Internal Target Area with a heavy gas jet target the ideal place to initiate our experimental program. The detection system will consist of four conventional $delta$E- E semiconductor telescopes. (auth)

$lambda$$sup 0$ inclusive production in $Sigma$$sup -$-nucleus reactions

Description: A counter spark chamber experiment was done in the AGS 23- GeV/c charged hyperon beam to study $lambda$$sup 0$ inclusive production in reactions of $Sigma$$sup -$ on Al, Cu, W, and Pb. Preliminary results are reported on the missing mass spectra in the reaction $Sigma$$sup -$ + Nucleon $Yields$ $lambda$$sup 0$ + M$sup 2$/sub x/. The data are compared with the relevant triple Regge formalism. (auth)

Regge trajectories and the quark-gluon coupling constant

Description: It is argued that vector gluons interacting with quarks produce logarithmic behavior of Regge trajectories at large momentum transfer in agreement with proton-proton scattering data. It is found that g/sup 2//4 pi = 14 where g is the gluonic charge (charm) of the quarks. Some suggestive relations between quark-gluon dynamics, duality magnetic charge and Jacobi's imaginary transformation are discussed. (auth)

Coherent pion dissociation into three pions on heavy nuclei

Description: A partial wave decomposition was made of the final state 3 pi system produced in the reaction pi /sup -/+ A yields ( pi /sup -/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup + /) + A at 23 GeV/c and for the elements C, Ai, Cu, and Ag. For low 3 pi masses, the 1/sup +/ state is dominant and its t' distribution shows the expected combination of coherent and incoherent components. The t' distribution of the 2/ sup +/ A/sub 2/ state also requires both coherent and incoherent components. (auth)
