Effect of Cr addition on γ-γ' cobalt-based Co-Mo-Al-Ta class of superalloys: a combined experimental and computational study

Description: This article deals with effect of Cr addition (10 at.%) on the partitioning behavior and the consequent effect on mechanical properties for tungsten-free γ-γ' cobalt-based superalloys with base alloy compositions of Co–30Ni–10Al–5Mo–2Ta (2Ta) and Co–30Ni–10Al–5Mo–2Ta–2Ti (2Ta2Ti).

The effect of multiple wavelengths on Laser-induced damage in DKDP crystals

Description: Laser-induced damage is a key factor that constrains how optical materials are used in high-power laser systems. In this work the size and density of bulk laser-induced damage sites formed during frequency tripling in a DKDP crystal are studied. The characteristics of the damage sites formed during tripling, where 1053-nm, 526-nm, and 351-nm light is simultaneously present, are compared to damage sites formed by 351-nm light alone. The fluence of each wavelength is calculated as a function of depth with a full 4D(x,y,z,t) frequency conversion code and compared to measured damage density and size distributions. The density of damage is found be predominantly governed by 351-nm light with some lesser, though non-negligible contribution from 526-nm light. The morphology of the damage sites, however, is seen to be relatively insensitive to wavelength and depend only on total fluence of all wavelengths present.

Laser Modified Alumina: a Computational and Experimental Analysis

Description: Laser surface modification involves rapid melting and solidification is an elegant technique used for locally tailoring the surface morphology of alumina in order to enhance its abrasive characteristics. COMSOL Multiphysics® based heat transfer modeling and experimental approaches were designed and used in this study for single and multiple laser tracks to achieve densely-packed multi-facet grains via temperature history, cooling rate, solidification, scanning electron micrographs, and wear rate. Multi-facet grains were produced at the center of laser track with primary dendrites extending toward the edge of single laser track. The multiple laser tracks study indicates the grain/dendrite size increases as the laser energy density increases resulting in multiplying the abrasive edges which in turn enhance the abrasive qualities.

Recent hybrid origin of three rare chinese turtles

Description: Three rare geoemydid turtles described from Chinese tradespecimens in the early 1990s, Ocadia glyphistoma, O. philippeni, andSacalia pseudocellata, are suspected to be hybrids because they are knownonly from their original descriptions and because they have morphologiesintermediate between other, better-known species. We cloned the allelesof a bi-parentally inherited nuclear intron from samples of these threespecies. The two aligned parental alleles of O. glyphistoma, O.philippeni, and S. pseudocellata have 5-11.5 times more heterozygouspositions than do 13 other geoemydid species. Phylogenetic analysis showsthat the two alleles from each turtle are strongly paraphyletic, butcorrectly match sequences of other species that were hypothesized frommorphology to be their parental species. We conclude that these rareturtles represent recent hybrids rather than valid species. Specifically,"O. glyphistoma" is a hybrid of Mauremys sinensis and M. cf. annamensis,"O. philippeni" is a hybrid of M. sinensis and Cuora trifasciata, and "S.pseudocellata" is a hybrid of C. trifasciata and S. quadriocellata.Conservation resources are better directed toward finding and protectingpopulations of other rare Southeast Asian turtles that do representdistinct evolutionary lineages.

Studies on the Morphology and Biology of Cotton Rats (Sigmodon hispidus) from Northern Mexico to Southern Nebraska

Description: This investigation was designed to evaluate the need for retaining both Sigmodon hispidus texianus and Sigmodon hispidus berlandieri as subspecific designations. An attempt was made to demonstrate bioclimatic variation and reproductive seasonality in cotton rats. The validity of applying the results of isolated studies of cotton rat populations to the species as a whole was examined.

Colonial dissociation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Description: The studies reported herein indicate that, under the conditions commonly employed for cultivating Neisseria gonorrhoeae, colonial type T1 and T2 cultures of the organism dissociate to type T3 and T4 forms, and that this occurs both among populations of the organism grown in liquid media as well as in individual, well-isolated colonies grown on solid media.

TEM Study of Fracturing in Spherical and Plate-like LiFePO4Particles

Description: An investigation of fracturing in LiFePO{sub 4} particles as a function of the particle morphology and history is presented. Two types of samples, one subjected to electrochemical cycling and another to chemical delithiation are compared. We observe the formation of micro fractures parallel to low indexed lattice planes in both samples. The fracture surfaces are predominantly parallel to (100) planes in the chemically delithiated powder and (100) and (010) planes in the electrochemically cycled powder. A consideration of the threshold stresses for dislocation glide shows that particle geometry plays an important role in the observed behavior.

Sculpting the shape of semiconductor heteroepitaxial islands: fromdots to rods

Description: In the Ge on Si model heteroepitaxial system, metal patterns on the silicon surface provide unprecedented control over the morphology of highly ordered Ge islands. Island shape including nanorods and truncated pyramids is set by the metal species and substrate orientation. Analysis of island faceting elucidates the prominent role of the metal in promoting growth of preferred facet orientations while investigations of island composition and structure reveal the importance of Si-Ge intermixing in island evolution. These effects reflect a remarkable combination of metal-mediated growth phenomena that may be exploited to tailor the functionality of island arrays in heteroepitaxial systems.

Characterization of the effect of short pulse exposure on laser damage size, morphology, and conditioning in wide band gap materials

Description: The first objective of this proposal was to develop a fundamental understanding of how short-pulse (100 ps to 1 ns) laser parameters affect conditioning and damage initiation in KDP and DKDP crystals. In this study we experimentally determine the effect of short-pulse laser parameters including pulse duration, pulse shape, and fluence on conditioning effectiveness, pinpoint damage density, pinpoint size, and pinpoint morphology in crystals. Based on the experimental results we developed empirical models, which give insight into the underlying physics of energy deposition from short-pulse lasers in KDP and DKDP crystals. The second objective of this proposal was to explore the mechanisms by which energy is deposited during damage in SiO{sub 2}. We have measured how laser parameters such as pulse duration, pulse shape, wavelength, and fluence are relevant to energy deposition, for initiation and growth on the surface of SiO{sub 2} optics.

Streamflows and Channels of the Green River Basin, Wyoming

Description: From introduction: One purpose of this study was to describe streamflows of the Green River and its tributaries. In addition to describing the cause and occurrence of streamflows in the study area, a brief discussion of how streamflow data are collected and summarized is presented as background information to users of this report who may be unfamiliar with streamflow measurement. The second and primary purpose of this study was to describe hydraulic characteristics of streams in the study area.

Analysis of community structure in networks of correlated data

Description: We present a reformulation of modularity that allows the analysis of the community structure in networks of correlated data. The new modularity preserves the probabilistic semantics of the original definition even when the network is directed, weighted, signed, and has self-loops. This is the most general condition one can find in the study of any network, in particular those defined from correlated data. We apply our results to a real network of correlated data between stores in the city of Lyon (France).

Geographic Variation in Chromosomes and Morphology of Peromyscus Maniculatus in Texas and Oklahoma

Optical Spectroscopy Study of Transparent Non-Carious Human Dentin and Dentin-Enamel Junction

Description: Improving our knowledge of the morphology, composition and properties of the dentin, enamel, and the dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) is vital for the development of improved restorative materials and clinical placement techniques. Most studies of dental tissues have used light microscopy for characterization. In our investigation, the spectroscopic properties of normal and non-carious transparent human root dentin, and the dentin-enamel junction were investigated using emission imaging microscopy, and micro-spectroscopy. Experimental results reveal new information on the structural and biochemical characteristics of these dental tissues.
