Investigation of Whiteware Clay Deposit, Fergus County, Montana

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over studies conducted on the Whiteware clay deposit. As stated in the introduction, "this report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps" (p. 1-2). Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in Southwestern Montana

Description: From introduction: This report presents data gathered in a Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) conducted by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) in southwestern Montana. Favorability for Uranium in Tertiary Sedimentary Rocks, Southwestern Montana

Description: The objective of the study was to evaluate the favorability for potential uranium resources in Tertiary and related strata. Past studies indicate that the Tertiary basins in southwestern Montana are worthy of further investigation because (1) several basins contain a thick sequence of continental sedimentary rocks, (2) several basins are near possible granitic source rocks that have known uranium occurrences, and (3) some of the Montana basins are geologically similar to basins in Wyoming that are host to important sandstone-type deposits. This study focuses on sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age, but includes some rocks of Late Cretaceous and Pleistocene ages. In some areas only a portion of the total Tertiary sedimentary section could be studied because of poor surface exposures and limited subsurface information.

The Forsyth Coal Field: Rosebud, Treasure, and Big Horn Counties, Montana

The Ashland Coal Field, Rosebud, Powder River, and Custer Counties, Montana

Description: From introduction: The detailed information concerning the coal deposits of the Ashland field set forth in this report has been obtained in the course of an investigation that has been conducted both as a part of the United States Geological Survey's general systematic study of western coal lands and as an aid in the administration of the public lands. With the information obtained on the location of outcrops, the number, distribution, and thickness of coal beds, the accessibility of the coal, and the thickness of the overburden, the public lands of the region are classified as to their coal value; coal-bearing lands are differentiated from noncoal-bearing lands; and the administration of the coal-land leasing law is facilitated.

Geology of the Stanford-Hobson Area, Central Montana

Description: From introduction: The Stanford-Hobson area project was undertaken by the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Reclamation, as part of a program for the geologic mapping and investigation of mineral resources in the Missouri River basin. The field work that is the basis of the ensuing report consisted of mapping the geology and determining stratigraphic relationships in sufficient detail to evaluate the mineral resources, especially the oil and gas possibilities in the area.

Geology and Mineral Resources of North-Central Chouteau, Western Hill, and Eastern Liberty Counties, Montana

Description: From abstract: This report describes a rectangular area of about 2,600 square miles in Chouteau, Hill, and Liberty Counties, Mont., adjacent to the international boundary. The area is a portion of the Missouri Plateau, a section of the Great Plains province, and lies between the Highwood Mountains, Bearpaw Mountains, and Sweetgrass Hills, of north-central Montana. The southern part of the area is drained by the Missouri River and its tributary Marias River, but the northern part is drained by the Milk River. These streams are trenched in narrow valleys several hundred feet deep. The land surface between them is a rolling plain interrupted by very broad, shallow valleys that probably were eroded during the Pleistocene epoch by large streams whose courses were doubtless diverted from time to time by the continental glaciers. These valleys are now occupied only by very small creeks.

The Rosebud Coal Field, Rosebud and Custer Counties, Montana

Description: From abstract: The Rosebud coal field, named from Rosebud Creek and the village of Rosebud, includes an area of about 1,050 square miles and forms a very small part of the subbituminous and lignite coal fields of eastern Montana and Wyoming and the western part of the Dakotas. It is an irregularly bounded tract lying south of the Yellowstone River in eastern Rosebud County and western Custer County and measures 50 miles from east to west and 28 miles from north to south. It adjoins the Forsyth coal field, on the west, the Ashland coal field, on the south, and the Miles City coal field, in part, on the north.

Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Ruby Range and Sweetwater Basin, Montana

Description: Abstract: A low-level airborne radioactivity survey of parts of Beaverhead and Madison Counties in southwestern Montana was undertaken from June 6 to October 14, 1955. Flying centered around the Ruby Range-Sweetwater Basin area and concentrated on the Precambrian metamorphic complex and Tertiary lake-bed sediments. No commercial uranium deposits were discovered, and no extensions were found of the few known small occurrences. Five areas of high background detected through the survey were investigated on the ground.

National Uranium Resource Evaluation: White Sulphur Spring Quadrangle, Montana

Description: From Purpose: "The White Sulphur Springs Quadrangle, in west-central Montana between latitude 46º and 47ºN. and longitude 110º and 112ºW. (Fig. 1), was evaluated to identify geologic environments and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Favorable environments, as determined by surface and subsurface investigations, are those that could contain uranium deposits of at least 100 tons U3O8 at an average not less than 100 ppm U3O8."

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in Lincoln and Flathead Counties, Northwest Montana

Description: From abstract: Between mid-May and late June 1976, 3409 water and water-transported sediment samples were collected from 1781 locations spread over an approximate 17 000 kilometer area of northwestern Montana. All of the samples were analyzed for total uranium at the LASL, using standardized procedures and rigorous quality controls--the waters by fluorometry and the sediment (and those waters with >10 parts per billion uranium) by delayed-neutron counting methods.

Tectonic Map of Eastern Montana Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

Description: From introduction: A tectonic map for the northern part of the Cordilleran Foreland was compiled to aid in establishing the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and localities, and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The relationships might suggest new areas favorable for the discovery of uranium deposits in the Cordilleran Foreland as well as in other areas with similar tectonic history. The map will show the distribution of crest lines and troughs of folds, faults, uranium deposits and localities, and areas of volcanic activity. Outcrop areas of Precambrian and post-Eocene rocks are shown to designate the relative age of structures. Where possible the Precambrian rocks are subdivided into structural types, so that their influence on younger deformations may be inferred. The map of eastern Montana is one of a series being prepared before the final map is assembled (fig. 1.).
