Kinetics of an H$sub 2$--F$sub 2$ explosion as initiated by a pulse of fluorine atoms

Description: The elementary reactions occurring in an H/sub 2/-F/sub 2/ explosion are given with each vibrational level of H/sub 2/ and HF considered as a separate reacting species. Rate coefficients for all the elementary reactions are either estimated or calculated, and the major assumptions entering into the determination of each rate coefficient are given. The effect of non-Maxwell distributions in the translational energies of some of the species is estimated. For strong pulses of F atoms, the explosio… more

Standing wave solutions to the inhomogeneous equation for identical particle scattering

Description: The standing wave solution to the inhomogeneous equation describing identical particle scattering is re-examined. Although the form of that solution is correct, its content is shown to be incorrect. A paradigm for constructing the correct solution, based on unitarity, is discussed, and the proper solution is then obtained. A comparison of different standing wave solutions with differing K operators is given. The results are shown to be an extension to the multi-channel case of those derived pre… more

Interaction of molecular beams with solid surfaces

Description: From proceedings of the International Summer Institute in surface science; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (28 Aug 1973). Molecular beam - surface scattering experiments, the nature of elastic and inelastic scattering, and the information obtained from detection of the angular distribution and kinetic energy of the scattered particles are described. The types of energy exchange that take place between a gas atom or molecule and the surface atoms and the theories that have been developed to explain so… more

Dynamics of Chemical Reactions. Progress Report, January 1, 1973-- December 31, 1973

Description: In this period, significant progress has been made in the studies of: interactions and reactions of metastable rare gas atoms, and atoms and molecules; the dynamics of collision induced dissociation of diatomic molecules; translational to vibrational rotational energy transfers of linear triatomic molecules by rare gas atoms; scattering of state selected molecules; improvement in the velocity analysis of scattered molecules and the method of atomic beams production; and intramolecular energy tr… more

Excitation states of projectiles moving through solids

Description: From 3rd international conference on atomic collisions in solids; Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA (23 Sep 1973). X-ray spectral measurements of S, Cl, and Ar atoms moving in solid carbon targets are used to extract the equilibrium distribution of vacancies in the valence and L-shells of the projectiles. It is found that the state of excitation is much higher than the mean charge measured after the projectile has left the solid. A simple model is used to deduce the expected final charge state distrib… more

Basic Studies of Atomic Dynamics. Progress Report, October 1, 1972-- September 30, 1973

Description: Several lines of research, mostly interrelated, were advanced this year. The study of the prototype two-electron program was restarted. Further applications of the quantum defect and frame transformation methods were extensive, analyzing and interrelating spectral and collision parameters of Ar, Xe, Al and of the alkaline earths. A new method for R matrix calculations was developed and tested for Ar. This method is being adapted to a cellular approach to molecular and crystal problems. A list o… more

Generalized Oscillator Strengths. Progress Report, July 1, 1973--July 1, 1974

Description: Progress is described on research under Contract AT(11-1)3247 and research still to be completed in the period July 1, 1973 to July 1, 1974. The research objectives defined in the original proposal were closely followed. The principal accomplishments during the period were: The introduction of a computer controlled counting system with provision for automatic control and operation of the electron spectrometer currently in use. Electron scattering with excitation of singlet-triplet transitions f… more

Molecular beam apparatus for student experiments on reactive scattering

Description: The construction and operation of a simple molecular beam apparatus is described, and some of the results obtained with it for distributions for the reactions K + Br/sub 2/ yields KBr + Br and K + CH/sub 3/I yields KI + CH/sub 3/. (JFP)

Anode sputtering characteristics of the Berkeley 2.5 MV source

Description: An investigation was made of a number of parameters affecting the performance of the SuperHILAC 2.5 MV Adam injector source. The description will emphasize anode sputtered materials, and will discuss in some detail calcium and gold ion production. Parameters varied include electrode geometry, support gas type and electrode bias, to optimize beam intensity and electrode consumption. A factor of three improvement with high n$sup +$ gold ions appears evident with a new displaced electrode geometry… more

Polynomial solutions of the Schroedinger equation applied to photon cross sections in atoms

Description: Solutions of the Schrodinger equation with a realistic potential are carried out in detail. To check the methods, a few boundbound, bound-free, and free-free cross sections were calculated and values compared with existing calculations and experimental data. These comparisons, along with a listing of the computer code in its bound-free form, are included. (auth)
