The Role of Mobile Homes in Migration from Mexico to Central North Carolina

Description: A key consideration in the human migration process to a destination country is the need to secure suitable and affordable housing. As housing costs have increased in the United States in recent decades, mobile homes – also known as manufactured housing or "trailers" – have become a significant source of affordable housing for people living in the United States. In rural communities, mobile homes have become a substantial portion of the available housing stock. This research project explored mob… more

Performance of powder-filled evacuated panel insulation in a manufactured home roof cavity: Tests in the Large Scale Climate Simulator

Description: A full-scale section of half the top of a single-wide manufactured home has been studied in the Large Scale Climate Simulator (LSCS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A small roof cavity with little room for insulation at the eaves is often the case with single-wide units and limits practical ways to improve thermal performance. The purpose of the current tests was to obtain steady-state performance data for the roof cavity of the manufactured home test section when the roof cavity was insu… more

Manufactured Homes Acquisition Program : Heat Loss Assumptions and Calculations, Heat Loss Coefficient Tables.

Description: This manual is intended to assist builders of manufactured homes in assessing the thermal performance of structural components used in the Manufactured Housing Acquisition Program (MAP) sponsored by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). U-factors for these components are calculated using the ASHRAE (1989) parallel heat loss method, with adaptations made for the construction practices found in the Pacific Northwest manufactured home industry. This report is divided into two parts. The first… more

Advanced Aerodynamic Devices to Improve the Performance, Economics, Handling, and Safety of Heavy Vehicles

Description: Research is being conducted at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to develop advanced aerodynamic devices to improve the performance, economics, stability, handling and safety of operation of Heavy Vehicles by using previously-developed and flight-tested pneumatic (blown) aircraft technology. Recent wind-tunnel investigations of a generic Heavy Vehicle model with blowing slots on both the leading and trailing edges of the trailer have been conducted under contract to the DOE Office of H… more

Results of a field test of heating system efficiency and thermal distribution system efficiency in a manufactured home

Description: A two-day test using electric coheating was performed on a manufactured home in Watertown, New York. The main objective of the test was to evaluate planned procedures for measuring thermal distribution system efficiency. (Thermal distribution systems are the ductwork or piping used to transport heat or cooling effect from the equipment that produces it to the building spaces in which it is used.) These procedures are under consideration for a standard method of test now being prepared by a spec… more

Field Test of Advanced Duct-Sealing Technologies Within the Weatherization Assistance Program

Description: A field test of an aerosol-spray duct-sealing technology and a conventional, best-practice approach was performed in 80 homes to determine the efficacy and programmatic needs of the duct-sealing technologies as applied in the U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program. The field test was performed in five states: Iowa, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. The study found that, compared with the best-practice approach, the aerosol-spray technology is 50% more effect… more

[A couple and a man in a suit outside of a mobile home]

Description: Photograph of a couple and a man in a suit outside of a mobile home. The man in the suit has dark hair combed back from his face and smiles towards the left side of the photo as he holds out a paper in one hand. The suit he wears is solid black, as is his tie, while his shirt is white in color. To his left stands a woman in a dress and a man in a suit. The man standing with the woman also wears a black suit with a white shirt, though his tie is lighter in color with a thin pattern across it. Th… more

Validation of the Manufactured Home Energy Audit (MHEA)

Description: The Manufactured Home Energy Audit (MHEA) is an energy audit tool designed specifically to identify recommended weatherization measures for mobile homes as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Weatherization Assistance Program. A field validation of MHEA was performed using billing/delivery data collected on 86 mobile homes heated primarily by electricity, natural gas, or propane to assess the audit's accuracy and the validity of its recommendations. The validation found that MHEA ov… more

Impact evaluation of a major residential efficiency program: The importance of market transformation

Description: In the Pacific Northwest, about 40% of new electrically heated homes are HUD-code manufactured homes (commonly called {open_quotes}mobile homes{close_quotes}). The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sets national energy-efficiency construction standards for manufactured homes that preempt them from local building codes. Until October 1994, a relatively low efficiency requirement established in 1976 by HUD was in place for manufactured homes. The Bonneville Power Administrati… more

Innovation in manufactured housing energy-efficiency programs

Description: The manufactured housing industry has undergone some major changes in the Pacific Northwest. Drafty mobile homes with a reputation for low quality and energy efficiency performance may become a thing of the past thanks to some innovative programs to upgrade manufactured housing sponsored by Northwest utilities and the Bonneville Power Administration. Utilities started paying attention to manufactured housing in the mid 1980s when they learned that up to 50% of new houses sited in their areas we… more

The Federal manufactured home construction and safety standards -- implications for foam panel construction

Description: This report reviews the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development construction code for (HUD-code) manufactured homes, Part 3280: Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (the HUD Code), to identify sections that might be relevant in determining if insulated foam core panels (or structural insulated panels, SIPs) meet the requirements of Part 3280 for use in manufactured home construction. The U.S. Department of Energy and other parties are interested in the use of SIPs in res… more

Impact evaluation for the Manufactured Housing Acquisition Program: Technical appendix

Description: This document supplements the Manufactured Housing Acquisition Program (MAP) impact evaluation report, Lee et al. (1995). MAP is a voluntary energy-efficiency program for HUD-code manufactured homes conducted in the Pacific Northwest beginning in April 1992. Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) prepared this and the impact evaluation reports for the Bonneville Power Administration (Bonneville). Lee et al. (1995) presents the objectives, methodology, and findings of the program evaluation. This re… more

Energy efficiency study of single-wide manufactured homes

Description: This Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was among Tennessee Technological University, Clayton Homes, Inc., and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Manufactured homes now make up a substantial portion of the new home market, and improving the energy efficiency of these homes would save significant amounts of energy. This project explored the impact of differing levels of attic insulation, the use of evacuated insulation panels, and the application of a solar reflective roof… more
