Description: From abstract: Pitchblende is known to occur in the Jo Reynolds deposit, which was primarily a lead-zinc-silver ore body. The reported production in 1919 of 8 tons of high-grade uranium ore, presumably from the lowest workings of the mine, is still unconfirmed but has a fair degree of credibility.

Exploration of the Big Boulder Prospect, Larimer County, Colorado

Description: From introduction: The Big Boulder prospect is in SE 1/4 sec. 36, T.7N., R.,72W., in Tarimer County, Colorado. The prospect has been opened by four irregular trenches and shallow cuts, and a 10-foot discovery shaft. Hanley 1/4 states that 10.5 tons of beryl were produced from the Big Boulder prospect in 1936, and about 600 pounds in 1941.

Mineral Resources of the Willow Creek and Skull Creek Wilderness Study Areas, Moffat County, Colorado

Description: Abstract: The Willow Creek Wilderness Study Area (CO-010-002) and the Skull Creek Wilderness Study Area (C-010-003), which contain 13,368 acres and 13,739 acres, respectively, are in northwest Colorado near the Utah border. There are no identified resources in either of the study areas. The study areas have low resource potential for undiscovered uranium, vanadium, copper, and all other metals; oil and gas; and coal.

Preliminary Report on Diamond-Drill Exploration of Parts of Blue and Moon Mesas, Mesa County, Colorado

Description: From abstract and summary: The Blue and Moon Mesa areas are about 13 miles southeast of Gateway, Mesa County, Colo. Total production of carnotite ore from the Blue and Moon Mesa areas has been about 1,000 short tons that averaged about 0.25 percent U30Oand 1.75 percent V205. Most of this production was obtained from 1940 to 1943 and in 1949. The U. S. Geological Survey explored the northern parts of these areas by diamond drilling between August 9 and December 14, 1950. The Survey drilled 113 holes, totalling 16,039 feet. This drilling was mostly wide-spaced and was done to obtain geologic information.

Uranium Occurrences in the Golden Gate Canyon and Ralston Creek Areas, Jefferson County, Colorado

Description: From abstract: Pitchblende, associated with base-metal sulfides, has been found at eight localities in the northern part of Jefferson County, Colo., in shear zones that cut pre-Cambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, chiefly hornblende gneiss, biotite schist, and granite pegmatite. The pitchblende deposits, with one exception, are in major shear zones that contain vein-like bodies of carbonate-rich breccia. The breccia bodies range from 1 to 5 feet in thickness and are related probably to the Laramide faults, or "breccia reefs" of similar trend, mapped by Lovering and Goddard (1950).

Large-Scale Geologic Guides to Carnotite Deposits in the Uravan and Gateway Districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colorado

Description: Abstract: Results of detailed mapping of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Uravan and Gateway districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colo., suggest that large areas containing both lenticular bedding in the ore-bearing sandstone and persistently altered mudstone beneath the sandstone are generally favorable for carnotite deposits.

Mineral Resources of the Bull Gulch Wilderness Study Area, Eagle County, Colorado

Description: From summary: The USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) and the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) studied 10,414 acres of the Bull Gulch (CO-070-430) Wilderness Study Area in Eagle County, Colorado. The area has identified, minable sand and gravel deposits; there are no other identified resources. It has moderate mineral resource potential for gypsum and anhydrite, and low potential for all metals, including uranium, coal, oil and gas, and geothermal resources.

Results of Exploration at the Old Leyden Coal Mine, Jefferson County, Colorado

Description: From abstract: Six diamond-core holes totaling 2, 201 feet were drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines under contract to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission at the Old Leyden coal mine, Jefferson County, Colo. The holes were spotted on the basis of geologic mapping by the U. S. Geological survey and were drilled to explore the lateral and downward extent of a uranium-bearing coal and the associated carnotite deposits in the adjacent sandstone. The data obtained from the diamond-core holes helped to explain the geology and structural control of the deposit. The uranium is most abundant in a coal bed that in places has been brecciated by shearing, and then altered to a hard, dense, and silicified rock. The uraniferous coal is in the nearly vertical beds of the Laramie formation of Upper Cretaceous age,

Preliminary Report on 1952 Field Investigations in Wet Mountains, Colorado

Description: From page 3: A metallogenic province containing thorium in veins in pre-Cambrian rocks along the western slope of the Wet Mountains, Colo. found by the Reconnaissance Group of the U. S. Geological Survey during the summer of 1950,was revealed by the discovery during fiscal-years 1951-1952 of seventeen radioactive deposits scattered along a north-northwest linear distance of twenty miles. All the thorium occurrences were found within terrain that has never been geologically mapped. Three of the most promising localities were mapped at 1:1,200, and a diamond-drilling program was conducted at Haputa ranch.

Nickel Deposit Near Gold Hill, Boulder County, Colorado

Description: From Introduction: "Scattered throughout the Colorado Front Range, there are many small copper deposits, believed to be of pre-Cambrian age. The have been widely prospected but have produced little or no ore. In one of these, the Copper King mine, near Gold Hill, Colo., nickel was discovered in 1930, and development in the following years has exposed some 25,000 tons of ore containing from 2 to 3 percent of nickel. No other nickel deposit is known in the Front Range, but a somewhat similar deposit has been opened in Gem mine, near Canon City and about 120 miles south of Gold Hill."

Description: Abstract: The Treasure Hill area consists of eight mining-lode claims in secs. 10 and 15, T. 9 N., R. 70 W., Larimer County, Colo. All of the workings were examined and samples were taken from most of them. The results of the examination indicate that there is little or no detectable radioactivity in the schist and granite of the area.

Pegmatites of the Crystal Mountain District, Larimer County, Colorado

Description: From abstract: The Front Range of Colorado is composed chiefly of schists of the Idaho Springs formation of pre-Cambrian age which have been intruded by a variety of granitic batholiths. In the Crystal Mountain district the Mount Olympus granite, a satellite of Fuller's Longs Peak batholith, forms sills and essentially concordant multiple intrusions in quartz-mica schist that dips southward at moderate to steep angles. A great number of pegmatites accompanied and followed the intrusion of the sills and formed concordant and discordant bodies in schist and granite.
