Acoustic Flowmeter Prototype Evaluation Tests

Description: Summary: "Prototype tests of an acoustic flowmeter system were made in a 24-ftdiam power penstock at Oahe Dam to evaluate the system prior to permanent installation in the outlet works at Summersville Dam. Comparative discharge measurements included acoustic, penstock pressure-momentum (Gibson), turbine model test ratings, scroll-case pressure differential (Winter-Kennedy flowmeter), and surge tank volume changes. The acoustic flowmeter measurements were very consistent and many of the comparisons were within 1%. The location of the measuring section for a single-path acoustic flowmeter must be selected to give a known or measurable relation between the flow pattern of the whole section and that along the acoustic path" (p. xi).

An Improved Continuous-Indicating Dew-Point Meter

Description: Note presenting the development of a continuous-indicating dew-point meter that automatically maintains a mirror surface at the dew point. The instrument was found to have an average accuracy of 1 degrees Fahrenheit over the range of 75 to -45 degrees. The accuracy of the instrument is uncertain at temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit by the difference in vapor-solid and vapor-liquid equilibrium temperatures.

N.A.C.A. Recording Air Speed Meter

Description: A new type of air speed meter is described which was designed by the technical staff of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The instrument consists essentially of a tight metal diaphragm of high natural period which is acted upon by the pressure difference of a pitot-static head. The resulting deflection of this diaphragm is recorded optically on a moving film.

Total-Head Meter With Small Sensitivity to Yaw

Description: The total-head meter is essentially a venturi, housing a pitot tube for obtaining the total head. In yaw the flow within the nozzle is deflected, depending upon the degree of yaw, to a greater or lesser extent into the axial direction of the nozzle. After experimenting with several nozzle forms as to their suitability, the best design was finally adopted. When, with the chosen nozzle form, the total head is 0.5 entrance section diameter downstream, the instrument supplies the genuine total head at low Reynolds Numbers up to 43 degrees yaw.

Third-Party Finance for Commercial Photovoltaic Systems: The Rise of the PPA

Description: Installations of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems in the United States have increased dramatically in recent years, growing from less than 20 MW in 2000 to nearly 500 MW at the end of 2007, a compound average annual growth rate of 59%. Of particular note is the increasing contribution of 'non-residential' grid-connected PV systems--defined here as those systems installed on the customer (rather than utility) side of the meter at commercial, institutional, non-profit, or governmental properties--to the overall growth trend. Although there is some uncertainty in the numbers, non-residential PV capacity grew from less than half of aggregate annual capacity installations in 2000-2002 to nearly two-thirds in 2007. This relative growth trend is expected to have continued through 2008. This article, which is excerpted from a longer report, focuses specifically on just one subset of the non-residential PV market: systems hosted (and perhaps owned) by commercial, tax-paying entities. An investigation of aircraft heaters 17: experimental inquiry into steady state unidirectional heat-meter corrections

An investigation of aircraft heaters 24: the heat meter in the transient state for unidirectional heat transfer

Description: Report describing the behavior of the heat meter when it is used in thermal circuits which are under the influence of transient potentials. Three scenarios are considered: a heat meter suddenly placed on a hot surface, a heat meter mounted on the interior surface of the cabin wall of an uninsulated airplane climbing through air of decreasing temperature, and a heat meter mounted on the interior surface of the composite cabin wall of an airplane climbing through air of decreasing temperature.

A Sound Pressure-Level Meter Without Amplification

Description: "The N.A.C.A. has developed a simple pressure-level meter for the measurement of sound-pressure levels above 70 db. The instrument employs a carbon microphone but has no amplification. The source of power is five flashlight batteries. Measurements may be made up to the threshold of feeling with an accuracy of plus or minus 2 db; band analysis of complex spectra may be made if desired" (p. 1).

Comparison of Three Multicylinder Icing Meters and Critique of Multicylinder Method

Description: "Three multicylinder cloud meters, fundamentally similar but differing in important details, were compared in use at the Mount Washington Observatory. Determinations of liquid water content were found to agree within the limits of the probable error, but the two instruments designed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics indicated larger drop sizes than did the Observatory's instrument, apparently because of spurious ice catch on the rather rough surface of the larger cylinders. Comparisons of drop-size distribution were largely indeterminate" (p. 1).

A Four Cell Lattice for the UCLA Compact Light Source Synchrotron

Description: The 1.5 GeV compact light source UCS proposed for UCLA must fit into a shielded vault that is 9.144 meters (30 feet) wide. In order for the machine to fit into the allowable space, the ring circumference must be reduced 36 meters, the circumference of the six cell lattice, to something like 26 or 27 meters. The four cell lattice described in this report has a ring circumference of 27.0 meters.

Fabrication and test results of a high field, Nb3Sn superconducting racetrack dipole magnet

Description: The LBNL Superconducting Magnet Program is extending accelerator magnet technology to the highest possible fields. A 1 meter long, racetrack dipole magnet, utilizing state-of-the-art Nb{sub 3}Sn superconductor, has been built and tested. A record dipole filed of 14.7 Tesla has been achieved. Relevant features of the final assembly and tested results are discussed.

Liquid metal Flow Meter - Final Report

Description: Measuring the flow of liquid metal presents serious challenges. Current commercially-available flow meters use ultrasonic, electromagnetic, and other technologies to measure flow, but are inadequate for liquid metal flow measurement because of the high temperatures required by most liquid metals. As a result of the reactivity and high temperatures of most liquid metals, corrosion and leakage become very serious safety concerns. The purpose of this project is to develop a flow meter for Lockheed Martin that measures the flow rate of molten metal in a conduit.

A proposal to study hard hadron - hadron collisions

Description: We propose a novel technique to study hadron-hadron collisions in which a significant fraction of the available energy is carried off in directions transverse to the beam. The technique is independent of the details of the final state so is ideally suited to searching for the jet-like particle clusters predicted by the parton model. The detector consists of a small calorimeter and several planes of 1 meter square proportional chambers.
