Effect of Rivet Holes on the Ultimate Strength Developed by 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T Sheet in Incomplete Diagonal Tension

Description: Strength tests were made of a number of 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy shear webs to determine the effect of rivet or bolt holes on the shear strength. Data were obtained for webs which approached a condition of pure shear stress as well as for webs with well-developed diagonal tension. The rivet factor, (pitch minus diameter) divided by pitch, was varied from approximately 0.81 to 0.62. These tests indicated that the shear stresses on the gross section were nearly constant for all values of the rivet factor investigated if the other properties of the web were not changed.

Dynamic Determination of the Compressibility of Metals

Description: Abstract: "Equation of State data for duralumin in the pressure range from 0.1 to 0.3 megabar have been determined dynamically by measuring shock and free surface velocity electrically in a place of 24 ST duralumin which has been stressed by a high explosive donation. The theory is presented which allows comparison with data obtained by other experimenters, requiring the relationship between pressure and compression either at constant entropy or constant temperature. The empirical form chosen for the equation of state p = αμ + βμ-2 expresses the pressure as a quadratic function of the compression. Experimental techniques are described in detail. Five points are given for equation of state of duralumin in the pressure range from approximately 0.15 megabar to 0.33 megabars. Some data are also presented for cadmium and steel."

Metal Complexes of 2,3-Quinoxalinedithiol

The Influence of Impact Velocity on the Tensile Characteristics of Some Aircraft Metals and Alloys

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium

Description: Abstract: "The amount of hydrogen normally present in zirconium and zirconium alloys suffices to reduce their ductility greatly in an impact test at room temperature, after slow cooling from 600 F. Quenching from 600 F or above gives high impact strength, as does removal of hydrogen by high-temperature vacuum annealing. This report discusses the evidence on hydrogen embrittlement, the diffusion, solid solubility, and equilibrium pressure of hydrogen of hydrogen in zirconium, the microstructure, and the effects of hydrogen and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of zirconium."

Utilization of the Surface Tension of Liquid Metals in Making High-Vacuum Seals

Description: Abstract: "The free energy (surface tension) of a liquid film can withstand atmospheric pressure across a maximum theoretical gap of 10-(-3) cm between solids if the liquid wets and bridges the sides of the gap continuously. The eutectic alloy of Ga, lm and Sm is used for this purpose. This alloy is molten at room temperature with surface tension > 500 dynes/cm, vapor pressure < 10-(-8) cm at 500 C and excellent wetting properties. This alloy can be utilized in valves, motion seals, flanged joints and for electrical contacts mounted in any position. Using ultrasonic soldering techniques without heat or flux this alloy is readily wetted on W, Mo, Ta, pyrex, quartz and certain ceramics. These materials will withstand the corrosive action of this alloy at at least 400 C. Some de-wetting has been observed with only the nonmetals at high temperatures. This de-wetting may be due to thermal decomposition of gallium oxide. Stainless steel is easily wetted, but is attacked at temperatures above 300 C. Copper and brass are attacked at room temperature."

Development and Properties of Uranium Monocarbide Cermets : Final Report

Description: Abstract: "Uranium monocarbide-Zircaloy II alloy cermets were developed and tested for chemical and physical properties. It was determined that pure uranium monocarbide can be prepared by vacuum are melting techniques. Following melting, the combination, hot pressing, and corrosion behavior of dense monocarbide has been studied. The preparation of uranium monocarbide-Zircaloy II cermet bodies was investigated by means of hot pressing, cold pressing and sintering, warm pressing, extrusion, and hot rolling. The corrosion resistance of the cermets was related to such variables as composition, preparation technique, and powder size. 01 per cent uranium monocarbide, 70 per cent zircaloy II cermets withstood corrosion tests in 680 F water. Cermets having above 30 weight per cent uranium monocarbide were not corrosion resistant."
