Analysis of the October 5, 1979 Lithium Spill and Fire in the Lithium Processing Test Loop

Description: On October 5, 1979, the Lithium Processing Test Loop (LPTL) developed a lithium leak in the electromagnetic (EM) pump channel, which damaged the pump, its surrounding support structure, and the underlying floor pan. A thorough analysis of the causes and consequences of the pump failure was conducted by personnel from CEN and several other ANL divisions. Metallurgical analyses of the elliptical pump channel and adjacent piping revealed that there was a significant buildup of iron-rich crystallit… more

Boron stainless steel for drop rods

Description: From introduction: "The present investigation of the properties of boron stainless steel is an outgrowth of a project started in 1947. The problem is to replace the present steel used for drop rods in the Hanford piles with a material much less subject to corrosive attack from the humid atmosphere existing at the location of the rods."

Metallurgical Evaluation of the Uranium Rods Rolled for the Chalk River Pile Test

Description: Summary: "The laboratory data collected during the metallurgical evaluation of these rods indicate that lower rolling temperatures increased the ultimate and yield strength, the amount of cold work, and the degree of preferred orientation existing in these uranium rods."

The Determination of Fluoride in Plutonium Metal by Thorium Titration

Description: Abstract: "A titrimetric method for the determination of fluoride in plutonium is reported. Prior to a steam distillation of the fluoride, the bulk of the plutonium is separated by precipitation of the sulfate. The fluoride in the distillate is titrated at a pH of 3.2 with 0.001 M thorium nitrate, using chrome azurol-S indicator. Applied to samples containing 1 to 15 parts per million fluoride, the recovery is 87% and the precision on the 95% confidence level is +/- 0.65 ppm."

Point Imperfections in Metals: Existance and Detection

Description: From introductory paragraph: "The factors which control the properties, and hence the utility, of an alloy are microscopic in nature. These factors are controlled by controlling the composition and past history of the material. control of the composition of the alloy determines for the most part the number and types of phases which will be present, while control of the past history of the alloy determines the grain size and degree of crystalline perfection within the grains. Since the electrica… more

Capture of Fast Neutrons by Pb208

Description: From abstract: "Comparison of the activity produced by fast neutrons on lead with other activations corroborates the assignment of the 3.2 hr. activity as Pb209, and the assignment of the reaction as capture of fast neutrons. Two different measurements show that the neutrons captured have energies greater than 100 KEV. This average capture cross section for primary neutrons from 7.5 MEV deuterons on a thick target of beryllium is measured as 10[^]-27 ca[^]2."
