Safety rod latch inspection

Description: During an attempt to raise control rods from the 100 K reactor in December, one rod could not be withdrawn. Subsequent investigation revealed that a small button'' in the latch mechanism had broken off of the lock plunger'' and was wedged in a position that prevented rod withdrawal. Failure of sheathed thermocouples due to thermal cycling

Description: Open circuit failures (up to 100%) in small-diameter thermocouples used in electrically heated nuclear fuel rod simulator prototypes during thermal cycling tests were investigated to determine the cause(s) of the failures. Some recent observations on the radiation behavior of uranium silicide dispersion fuel

Description: Addition of B{sub 4}C burnable poison results in higher plate swelling in both U{sub 3}Si{sub 2} and U{sub 3}Si-Al dispersion fuel plates and also decreases the blister threshold temperature of these plates. Prolonged annealing of U{sub 3}Si{sub 2}-Al fuel plates produced no blister after 696 hours at 400{degrees}C. The EDM surface: Topography, chemistry, and metallurgy

Description: The surface created by the electric discharge machining (EDM) process is of special interest because it has been shown to have a negative effect on the fatigue properties of many alloys. An understanding of the surface metallurgy and chemistry is important in predicting those alloys which are most susceptible to failure. Remedial actions, including thickness minimization, alteration, or removal of the surface layer are addressed.

Investigation of the sintering kinetics of lead powders. Final technical report

Description: An analysis of the parameters involved in the sintering of lead powders under vacuum has been made. Sintering was accomplished at temperatures between 250/sup 0/ and 280/sup 0/C. Evaluation of surface area reduction data results in values of the mechanism exponent N between 5.3 and 6.7. Fatigue-crack propagation in aluminum-lithium alloys processed by power and ingot metallurgy

Status of high-density fuel plates fabrication

Description: Progress has continued on the fabrication of fuel plates with fuel zone loadings approaching 9gU/cm{sup 3}. Using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIPping) successful diffusion bonds have been made with 110 Al and 6061 Al alloys.
