Production of Neutral Photopions as a Function of Atomic Weight

Description: Thesis discussing the relative yield of neutral pions from elements in a reaction "as a function of the quantum-limit energy (the maximum energy of the quanta in the bremsstrahlung beam) of the Berkeley synchrotron." Interpretation of the results leads to values for the mean free path for absorption of the neutral pions in nuclear matter.

The Bevatron and its Place in Nuclear Physics

Description: A sprawling group of buildings on an impressive campus site in the Berkeley hills provides the home of the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California. A succession of large accelerators has been built there, the latest of which is the Bevatron. It is the largest and highest-energy accelerator in operation at the present time. It was built and is operated under contract with the United States Atomic Energy Commission. It is of the type known as a proton synchrotron, of which there are … more

RESUME OF URANIUM ALLOY DATA-XI

Description: Results from studies of irradiation induced transformations in U--Mo and U--Nb alloys are reported. Progress in the development of a satisfactory brazing technique using Al alloy for use with U/sub 3/Si mods in Zircaloy-2 tubes is reviewed. Additional data are given on the corrosion of bare of U--q systems in water. Work directed toward the development of satisfactory UO/sub 2/ for fuel elements is reviewed. (D.E.B.)

The Catalysis of Nuclear Reactions by mu Mesons

Description: In the course of a recent experiment involving the stopping of negative K mesons in a 10-inch liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, an interesting new reaction was observed to take place. The chamber is traversed by many more negative {mu} mesons than K mesons, so that in the last 75,000 photographs, approximately 2500 {mu}{sup -} decays at rest have been observed. In the same pictures, several hundred {pi}{sup -} mesons have been observed to disappear at rest, presumably by one of the ''Panofsky rea… more
