F/H effluent treatment facility. Technical data summary

Description: This document provides the technical basis for the design of the facility. Some of the sections are described with options to permit simplification of the process, depending on the effluent quality criteria that the facility will have to meet. Each part of the F/HETF process is reviewed with respect to decontamination and concentration efficiency, operability, additional waste generation, energy efficiency, and compatability with the rest of the process.

Energy response and dose-rate calibration of a Geiger-Mueller gamma-ray detector

Description: To obtain more precise dose-rate measurements, we have taken a commercial gamma-ray dosimeter that uses a Geiger-Mueller (GM) tube as its detector and, by supplying it with an externally regulated high voltage, counted the gamma-ray-induced pulses with suitable scaling and timing circuits. We have now improved the method of calibration by measuring detector response to 13 different sources, each with an independently verified strength, in the energy range from 60 keV to 2.6 MeV. With the use of… more

Chemical analysis of sediment cores from the East Waterway (Everett, Washington). Final report

Description: Chemical data for two sediment cores from the East Waterway of Everett, Washington, indicate that 20 to 30 cm of contaminated sediments are accumulating per year. The concentrations of several heavy metals (Pb, Hg and Cu), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and petroleum hydrocarbons increase with depth in the sediments suggesting contamination of this waterway has varied by as much as a factor of 10 during the last 5 years. 7 references, 9 figures, 12 tables.

EP-toxicity testing of mercury removal resin grout

Description: To determine which category a waste will fit into, the EPA requires a classification test. The test, EP-toxicity, consists of a physical integrity test followed by an extraction. For the case of the mercury removal resin grout, the mercury concentration in the extract cannot exceed 0.2 mg/L if the waste is to be classified as ``solid waste.`` Otherwise, the waste is classified as ``hazardous.`` Simulated process solutions were used to load the mercury removal resin. The resin was solidified wit… more

Summary remarks and future prospects for on-line nuclear orientation

Description: Results from various groups which use on-line low temperature nuclear orientation techniques are presented. Several nuclear parameters have been successfully studied: rotational levels, nuclear deformation, and decay modes. Future prospects include multiparameter analysis, relaxation and pre-orientation, new separators, and alpha decay studies. 33 refs., 5 figs. (WRF)

High-Level Radioactive Insoluble Waste Preparation for Vitrification

Description: Abstract: At the Savannah River Plant (SRP), a process has been developed for immobilizing high-level radioactive waste in a borosilicate glass. The waste is currently stored as soluble salts and insoluble solids. Insoluble waste as stored requires further processing before vitrification is possible. The processed required have been developed and demonstrated with actual waste. They include removal of aluminum in some waste, washing soluble salts out of the insoluble waste, and mercury strippin… more

Particle-core Coupling Calculations for the Positive Parity States in the Odd-mass HG Isotopes as a Test of IBA Core Descriptions

Description: A particle-core coupling calculation has been made for the positive parity states in the odd-mass Hg isotopes, A = 187 to 197. This work employed the results of recent calculations with mixing between different boson numbers to describe the even-mass Hg cores. Comparison between the calculated results and the experimental scheme can be interpreted as a test of the core description. 9 references.

Health and environmental effects of coal-fired electric power plants

Description: This paper describes health and environmental impacts of coal-fired electric power plants. Effects on man, agriculture, and natural ecosystems are considered. These effects may result from direct impacts or exposures via air, water, and food chains. The paper is organized by geographical extent of effect. Occupational health impacts and local environmental effects such as noise and solid waste leachate are treated first. Then, regional effects of air pollution, including acid rain, are analyzed… more
