Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation

Description: Abstract: "An investigation of the mercury salvage program has resulted in the development of an improved high compacity type of distillation apparatus. The still, electrically heated and essentially automatic in its operation, will produce at a rate greater than 75 pounds per hour and develop a product 99.99% pure or better. This still will handle the lowest grade crude of amalgam that can pass through the feed lines and will continue to develop a pure prodcut for comparatively long periods of time. The clean-out operation is amazingly simple and convenient and may be done within one-half hour while the apparatus itself is still hot. Two models of this design are scheduled for installation in a mercury recovery room of the Alpha Analytical Department of Building No. 9207."

Description of a Dropping Mercury Polaroscope

Description: Abstract: " The construction and operation of a dropping mercury polaroscope developed by Quentin A. Kerns is described herein. With this polaroscope a Heyrovsky polarogram is automatically produced on the screen of a cathode ray tube during the formation of each drop at the tip of a dropping mercury electrode, a change in the resistance of the cell operates to initiate the generation of a voltage wave to be applied to the cell during the formation of the next drop during a predetermined fractional portion of the average drop formation period."

Alternative TRUEX-Based Pretreatment Processing of INEEL Sodium Bearing Waste

Description: The goals of this study were to demonstrate a selective complexant for separating mercury from the transuranic (TRU) elements in the transuranic extraction (TRUEX) process and to demonstrate alternative stripping methods to eliminate phosphorus-containing, actinide stripping agents during TRUEX processing. The work described in this report provides the basis for implementing an improved TRUEX-based flowsheet for processing INEEL sodium-bearing waste using only minor modifications to the current Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) flowsheet design.

Measurements of Mercury Released from Amalgams and Sulfide Compounds

Description: This report covers work performed during FY 1998 in support of treatment demonstrations conducted for the Mercury Working Group. In order to comply with the requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as implemented by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US Department of Energy (DOE) must apply amalgamation, the treatment standard for radioactively contaminated mercury, before disposing of these wastes. The Mercury Working Group under the Mixed Waste Focus Area sponsored a demonstration in which two commercial vendors demonstrated their technologies for the treatment of radioactive mercury from various DOE sites. The project, described in this report, addresses the need for data on the vapor pressure and degradation occurring in amalgamated mercury mixed low-level wastes generated during these demonstrations under a variety of conditions.

A Comparison of Mercury Localization, Speciation, and Histology in Multiple Fish Species From Caddo Lake, a Fresh Water Wetland

Description: This work explores the metabolism of mercury in liver and spleen tissue of fish from a methylmercury contaminated wetland. Wild-caught bass, catfish, bowfin and gar were collected. Macrophage centers, which are both reactive and primary germinal centers in various fish tissues, were hypothesized to be the cause of demethylation of methylmercury in fish tissue. Macrophage centers are differentially expressed in fish tissue based on phylogenetic lineage, and are found primarily in the livers of preteleostean fish and in the spleen of teleostean fish. Histology of liver and spleen was examined in both control and wild-caught fish for pathology, size and number of macrophage centers, and for localization of mercury. Total mercury was estimated in the muscle tissue of all fish by direct mercury analysis. Selenium and mercury concentrations were examined in the livers of wild-caught fish by liquid introduction inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Total mercury was localized in histologic sections by laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS). Mercury speciation was determined for inorganic and methylmercury in liver and spleen of fish by bas chromatography-cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (GC-CVAFS). Macrophage center tissue distribution was found to be consistent with the literature, with a predominance of centers in preteleostean liver and in spleens of teleostean fish. Little evidence histopathology was found in the livers or spleens of fish examined, but differences in morphology of macrophage centers and liver tissue across species are noted. the sole sign of liver pathology noted was increased hepatic hemosiderosis in fish with high proportions of liver inorganic mercury. Inorganic mercury was found to predominate in the livers of all fish but bass. Organic mercury was found to predominate in the spleens of all fish. Some Quicksilver Prospects in Adjacent Parts of Nevada, California, and Oregon

Description: Abstract: This report summarizes the results of reconnaissance study of quicksilver deposits in the northwestern corner of Nevada, the northeastern corner of California, and Lake County, Oreg. made in August 1940. The Lene Pine district, Nevada, the Silvertown and Red Hawk properties in California, and the Currier and Glass Butte properties in Oregon were included. The first two of these require further development before a definite opinion as to their value can be formed. The Red Hawk mine has yielded high-grade ore, but the ore bodies so far worked are very small and scattered. The small amount of development at the recently opened Currier mine has yielded encouraging results. The deposits in the Glass Buttes are large but of such low grade that thorough sampling would be needed to determine their value. In general the region appears to warrant more attention from quicksilver prospectors than it has yet received.

Short-pulse Laser Capability on the Mercury Laser System

Description: Applications using high energy ''petawatt-class'' laser drivers operating at repetition rates beyond 0.01 Hz are only now being envisioned. The Mercury laser system is designed to operate at 100 J/pulse at 10 Hz. We investigate the potential of configuring the Mercury laser to produce a rep-rated, ''petawatt-class'' source. The Mercury laser is a prototype of a high energy, high repetition rate source (100 J, 10 Hz). The design of the Mercury laser is based on the ability to scale in energy through scaling in aperture. Mercury is one of several 100 J, high repetition rate (10 Hz) lasers sources currently under development (HALNA, LUCIA, POLARIS). We examine the possibility of using Mercury as a pump source for a high irradiance ''petawatt-class'' source: either as a pump laser for an average power Ti:Sapphire laser, or as a pump laser for OPCPA based on YCa{sub 4}O(BO{sub 3}){sub 3} (YCOB), ideally producing a source approaching 30 J /30 fs /10 Hz--a high repetition rate petawatt. A comparison of the two systems with nominal configurations and efficiencies is shown in Table 1.
