Optimization of a VISAR for measuring flyer-plate velocities

Description: VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector) is commonly used for measuring flyer-plate velocities up to 6 km/s. Flyer plates can travel as much as 1 mm, which is large compared to usual depth-of-focus requirements for VISARs. Description: Honeywell G2655 lithium cells were tested over the temperature range -40/sup 0/ to +70/sup 0/C and subjected to shock levels up to 17,000 g's. Output at -40/sup 0/C was approximately 50 percent of that at +25/sup 0/C, while at +70/sup 0/C the output was 150 percent that at +25/sup 0/C. Computational determination of ballistic limits for a simple Whipple bumper shield

MESA 3-D calculations of armor penetration by projectiles with combined obliquity and yaw

Description: We introduce and briefly describe MESA, a new 3-D hydrodynamic code, developed specifically for simulations of armor and anti-armor systems. The code's current capabilities an its planned model improvements and additions are discussed. Hypervelocity launch capabilities to over 10 km/s

Description: Very high pressure and acceleration is necessary to launch flier plates to hypervelocities. In addition, the high pressure loading must be uniform, structured, and shockless, i.e., time-dependent to prevent the flier plate from either fracturing or melting. In this paper, a novel technique is described which allows the use of megabar level loading pressures, and 10{sup 9} g acceleration to launch intact flier plates to velocities of 12.2 km/s. 32 refs., 2 figs.

Experimental-analytical comparison of the ductile failure of notched tensile bars

Description: Experimental results of the ductile failure of 7075-T6 aluminum notched tensile bars are compared with finite strain, nonlinear, finite element calculations. This comparison allows the investigation of mean stress dependent macroscopic theories for ductile fracture. Description: As part of the Milliwatt Generator (MWG) Program, a second series of pressure burst capsules welded offsite was tested; the resulting data indicate that the welds are very similar to those in the first series of capsules. Embrittlement of the Shippingport reactor shield tank

Description: The irradiation embrittlement of the Shippingport neutron tank material has been characterized. Irradiation increases the Charpy transition temperature (CTT) by {approximately}25{degrees}C (45{degrees}F) and decreases the upper shelf energy. The shift in CTT is not as severe as that observed in the HFIR surveillance specimens. Description: The 30 gallon Specification 6M shipping container with rolled-top food pack cans as inner containers is evaluated under conditions required by 10 CFR 71.42. Crash test of a nuclear spent fuel cask and truck transport system

Description: Sandia Laboratories has conducted a 96 kph (60 mph) full scale truck impact test for ERDA's Environmental Control Technology Division. Rockets propelled a 20, 500-kg (22-ton) cask mounted on its shipping trailer, coupled to a conventional cab-over tractor, into a massive, heavily reinforced concrete target.
