Probabilistic models of the stress-rupture of composite materials: Phase III. Progress report, June 15, 1978-June 14, 1980

Description: The development of static and time dependent models for the failure of composite materials has been pursued. These models are based on the chain-of-bundles probability model for composite failure wherein local load sharing among non-failed fiber elements in a bundle plays a key role. At the outset, it was believed that the static model was well developed in the literature by others, and that work on the time dependent versions could proceed. In these versions, the viscoelasticity of the matrix … more

Impact of flywheel-energy-storage technology upon taxicab fleet operation in a large metropolitan city

Description: The incorporation of flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) into automotive vehicles has been under consideration for some time. Previous studies have suggested that FESS can yield substantial benefits in automotive vehicle operation, particularly for urban driving. An assessment of the impacts resulting from incorporation of FESS into automotive fleets in a large metropolitan city is described. Specifically, the case of taxicab fleet operation within New York City is examined. Unique features … more

Flywheel rotor and containment technology development, FY83

Description: The Department of Energy decided to terminate the Flywheel Rotor and Containment Technology Development project during FY 1983. Activities this year included fabrication, inspection, and test evaluation of rotor and containment structures. A peak energy of 700 Wh was stored at an energy density of 70 Wh/kg. In cyclic tests, 10,000 cycles from design speed to half speed were logged without failure. The first test of a lightweight containment structure indicates the need for additional developmen… more

Near-term electric test vehicle ETV-2. Phase II. Final report

Description: A unique battery-powered passenger vehicle has been developed that provides a significant improvement over conventional electric vehicle performance, particularly during stop-and-go driving. The vehicle is unique in two major respects: (1) the power system incorporates a flywheel that stores energy during regenerative braking and makes possible the acceleration capability needed to keep up with traffic without reducing range to unacceptable values; and (2) lightweight plastic materials are used… more

Flywheel rotor and containment technology development

Description: The goals of the project are: to develop an economical and practical composite flywheel having an energy density of 88 Wh/kg at failure, an operational energy density of 44 to 55 Wh/kg, and an energy storage capacity of approximately 1 kWh; to determine the suitability of various manufacturing processes for low-cost rotor fabrication; to investigate flywheel and flywheel-systems dynamics; to test and evaluate prototype rotors for use in transportation and stationary applications; and to develop… more

Frequency analysis of a thick-rim flywheel. [NONSAP]

Description: The calculation of natural frequencies of a thick-rim flywheel is presented using two analysis methods: the finite-element method and the transfer matrix method. A listing of the computer program developed using the transfer matrix method is included. The results of the finite-element analyses indicate that the computer programs NONSAP and ADINA are incapable of determining out-of-plane natural frequencies of the flywheel. The results of the analysis using the transfer matrix method are satisfa… more

Design guide for composite-material flywheels: rotor dyamic considerations. Part I. System whirling and stability. Final report

Description: Information to designers of flywheels is provided which will enable them to predict many aspects of the dynamic behavior of their flywheel systems when spin-tested with a quill-shaft support and driven by an air turbine. Computer programs are presented for the following dynamic analysis to obtain the results indicated: free whirling for natural frequencies versus rotational speed and the associated mode shapes; rough-type stability analysis for determining the stability limits; and forced whirl… more

Low-cost windmill that could be manufactured from local materials. Final report

Description: Two model windmills are described briefly. The first is a two-bladed rigidly mounted model with a weather vane for locking the blades in a neutral position in high winds. The second is a three-bladed model mounted on a flexible tower that bends in high winds. The three-bladed model is equipped with a flywheel. Publicity for the windmills is also described briefly. Reference concepts for a space-based hydrogen-oxygen combustion, turboalternator, burst power system

Description: This report describes reference concepts for a hydrogen-oxygen combustion, turboalternator power system that supplies power during battle engagement to a space-based, ballistic missile defense platform. All of the concepts are open''; that is, they exhaust hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and water vapor into space. We considered the situation where hydrogen is presumed to be free to the power system because it is also needed to cool the platform's weapon and the situation where hydrogen is no… more

Ultrasonic detection of fatigue damage in glass-epoxy composites

Description: Energy storage flywheels fabricated of S2 glass-epoxy composite were studied to determine the behavior of the ultrasonic properties as a function of strain history and to identify possible predictors of incipient failure. Tensile specimens of the flywheel material were loaded uniaxially, and the ultrasonic properties (i.e., the shear and longitudinal wave velocities and the attenuation) were measured as a function of strain. Finished flywheels were similarly tested at various stages during cycl… more
