A Description of Thermal Conductivity and Dynamic Viscosity of Water in the Critcal Region

Description: A study to establish reasonable estimates of the values of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of water in the critical region was conducted. This was accomplished by reviewing the literature and utilizing available experimental measurements. The validity of the estimates was strengthened by the use of the principle of corresponding states after other considerations failed to contribute a description of these two transport properties in the critical region. The final results were expressions of a thermal conductivity excess and dynamic viscosity excess as unique functions of density. (auth)

Hazards and Safety Measures Related to Nuclear-Powered Merchant Ships: An Annotated Bibliography of Declassified Literature

Description: This compilation contains 202 abstracts of reports and documents on subjects related to maritime reactor safety; the abstracts are indexed in thc AEC Abstracts of Classified Reports'' (ACR). These ACR references were listed as unclassified or declassified in TID-4021, TID-40.35, and TID-4035, Supplement 1. The abstracts were selected as a part of the preparation of the classified bibliography (ALI-50, printed August 30, 1958) on this same subject. (See also SO-6200, Septcmber 15, 1957, unclassified.) The abstracts are grouped according to the category of information they present; within each category, the most recent abstracts are given first. Subject, author, and report number indices are provided. A report number code key is not included. The report numbers used by the AEC Technical Information Service can be found in TID-85 (1st Rev.). The abstracts are those indexed through ACR Vol. 13 (1957). Because of the lag in abstracting, reports issued in late 1957 are not likely to be included. (auth)

OPTIMIZATION OF FISSION FRAGMENT CATCHER FOIL EXPOSURE TIME

Description: The exposure-time for fission fragment catcher foils, used in nuclear reactor power mapping, was arbitrarily set at 20 minutes. Work performed to evaluate this choice and to attempt an optimization of the exposure time is reported. A true optimum was not found. Forty minute runs are suggested, however, as a practical optimization and as an alternative to the 20 minute runs in current usage. (auth)

AN IMPROVED NUCLEAR DENSITY GAUGE. Period covered: October 2 to November 1, 1959

Description: Progress is reported on development of a scintillation detector which alternately views the radiation transmitted through a sample and through a calibrated wedge. From this information density and thickness data can be obtained. Long term stability measurements are being made on the commutating system and the causes of fluctuations are being investigated. OBSERVATIONS OF STRESSES AND STRAINS NEAR INTERSECTIONS OF CONICAL AND CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

Description: To test theory, models of the interaction of a conical and cylindrical shell, having three different apex angles in the cone and three different ratios of thickness to cylinder diameter, were subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure and the resulting strains at various points were measured. Careful studies were made of the unavoidable imperfections in the models. The results are in substantiai agreement with the Wenk-Taylor approximate theory described in TMB Report 826 and with the approximate theory of Geckeler. Comparisons are aiso made with other theories. (auth)
