ROUND TRIP FROM SPACE

Description: Whence came life on the surface of the earth? Whether or not a complete answer to this question may be found within the context, and content, of modern science, may be a moot question. It is our purpose to see how far we can devise an answer, and how satisfactory it may be, within that context. We trace a path from the primitive molecules of the primeval earth's atmosphere condensed from space through the random formation of more or less complex organic molecules, using the available energy sou… more

Transient Thermal Stresses in Pressure Vessels - Part II: Thermal Stress Calculation

Description: This report describes the second part of an IBM 704 Computer Code to determine transient thermal stress in pressure vessels. This part computes stresses from temperature distribution determined by the first part. A brief account is given of the solution of axially symmetric thermal stresses, using harmonic stress functions. This is followed by a description of the Code and complete input and operating instructions for a number of problems: a. Transient temperature distribution due to sudden cha… more

PULSE COLUMN DESIGN

Description: A stagewise approach was used in a theoretical analysis of pulse columns. In the analysis the column was arbitrarily divided into discrete stages comprising that part of the column between two adjacent perforated plates. The operation of the pulse column was described mathematically using material balance equations, and a design method was derived which used two stage lines and two operating lines, one set for the pulse generator upstroke and one set for the downstroke. Assuming equilibrium con… more

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RATE-CONTROLLING STEP OF THE MASS-TRANSFER PROCESS AND DISTRIBUTION OF CORROSION ATTACK

Description: Equations are derived which relate the distribution of corrosion attack or cold-zone deposits with the ratecontrolling step of a system which exhibits a thermalgradient mass transfer. Characteristic distributions of attack and deposition are illustrated for thermalgradient mass-transfer processes which are: (1) hotzone controlled, (2) cold-zone controlled, and (3) both hot-zone and cold- zone controlled and the limitations of the method are discussed. It is concluded that both the hot-zone and … more

SYSTEMS OF CONSERVATION LAWS

Description: A wide class of difference equations is described for approximating discontinuous time dependent solutions, with prescribed initial data, of hyperbolic systems of nonlinear conservation laws. Among these schemes we determine the best ones, i.e., these which have the smallest truncation error and in which the discontinuities are confined to a narrow band of 2 to 3 meshpoints. These schemes are tested for stability and are found to be stable under a mild strengthening of the CourantFriedrichs-Lew… more

Neutron Bursts in a Ring Reactor

Description: Azimuthal propagation of disturbances in a large aunular reactor is investigated by studying the equalization of neutron bursts in a ring or simply- periodic reactor. One-velocity diffusion theory is employed to obtain convenient expressions for the time required for approximate equalization of neutron density around the ring. (auth)

Progress Report No. 52 for December 1, 1957 Through February 28, 1958

Description: Some approximate values of the concentrations of the chlorine ion and the mean activity coefficients of HCl in Dowex 50, as functions of the mean activity of HCl are given. The KCl uptake by anion-exchange resins, Dowex 1 and 2, is plotted. Ion-exchange phase properties of HCl were determined from freezing point measurements. The thermodynamic acid dissociation constants of HClO/sub 4/, HCl, HNO/sub 3/, HBr, and HGaCl/sub 4/ in water-saturated bis(2- chloroethyl) ether, were obtained from coudu… more

PREDICTED SLURRY ACTIVATION IN HRE-3

Description: The gamma and beta activity of the proposed HRE-3 slurry for blanket operation at 10 Mw has been estimated. The sources of activity were found to be fission-product decay and Pa/sup 233/ decay. The estimated gamma activity of the slurry is plotted, showing the Pa/sup 233/ gammas, four energy groups of fission products, and the total gamma activity for a nearly infinite irradiation time. For the same conditions, the estimated beta activity of the slurry is plotted, showing the Pa/sup 233/ betas,… more
